Cancion del Emperador Narvaez Rustique 25 2

'Canción Del Emperador' is a setting for vihuela by the Spanish composer Luys de Narváez (1526–1549)) of the song 'Mille Regretz' by Josquin des Prez. I have had the pleasure and honour of playing it with the singer Ruth Pritchard. In this occasion it is just the vihuela setting, transcribed for guitar.

This take recorded live in concert at the Rustique Literary Café in Tufnell Park on 25/07/25. The guitar is a Yulong Guo Chamber Concert.

Alonso de Mudarra .(1510 – April 1, 1580) was a Spanish Renaissance composer for the vihuela. His most famous work may be the 'Tres Libros de Música en Cifra' ('cifra' in this case doesn't mean 'cipher' but tablature). I mostly follow Emilio Pujol's transcription; which I was a bit suspicious of at first given its age but having checked quite a bit of that music with the original tablatures I do believe he did a very good job with these pieces.The guitar is a Yamaha GC15d which I've had for nearly... half a century (isn't that scary). The tuning is changed to E, A, D, F

Tarleton's Resurrection

'Tarleton's Resurrection' by John Dowland (1563–1626). Richard Tarlton (?- 1588) was the foremost English actor of his period. Dowland's piece is an homage to the man.

The Grades this term

Interesting term for my private pupils: one is doing a Grade 7 Trinity Rock exam (and halfway through checking out a possible programme for Grade 8) , two others (very young) are doing an ABRSM Grade 2. Another two preparing (although not yet taking) ABRSM Grade 3 and 5.
