Challenge is to provide a clear conceptual model of a heating system. The inspiration for solution is "power of data to the users."
It's a graph displaying the current room temperature and it's history, the desired room temperature, and the current temperature of the heating units with the pre-modeled heating curve. At any point in time, the users can see not only all the monitored temperatures, but also the way heat propagates through their space.

After moving into my current living place, the kitchen's conceptual model was definitely on my mind when trying to make the space as efficient and adapt to the ways one cooks. Unfortunately, the combination of constraints (affixed sink, affixed stove, emergency exit door, built-in storage, affixed, windows...) only allowed limited room for play. As one can see in the relational diagram-map, cooking here is still quite inefficient with many long paths...
The prompt for this one actually comes from the DOET (intro to the Design of Everyday Things) course at Udacity.

There is this clever tea pot that one fills upside down through the hole at the bottom… It can be puzzling to see the pot on a table with no apparent opening. It’s an I intentionally misleading signifier - or lack thereof.
The prompt for this one actually comes from the DOET (intro to the Design of Everyday Things) course at Udacity.
note: I made this sketch without looking at the actual object. After seeing the 'puzzle pot' itself, I agree with a solution by 'user Dennis' (that is, without the need for the horizontal raised floor).

letter 6 | loved object
I love books. Dearly. I do not simply appreciate the content, I like books as object. Especially little books. It comes without saying tiny hardcovers tend to steal the show.
This book is one of my all time favorites. My mom loved it even before I was born. Great poems and amazing graphics. First, and only, edition. Published in 1966 as the publisher's reader's club exclusive reward in edition of mere 3000. They are hard to find these days.

letter 5 | glass onion mask
The mask as a perceptual filter. Mirrored sunglasses be a mask. Actor's make up be a mask. The act of peeking through the peephole of mask and hiding behind it at the same time. Looking at a mask-representation of me is like looking through a glass onion. The appearance of the mask pales in comparison with what is signifies both to me and the world around me. Here is seemingly a perfectly clear mask. You may never know in what way it alters your perception. You don't see me.
prompt: Make a mask representing yourself. And then, make a second one for a friend of yours.

letter 4 | cook food - minimalist scramble eggs
There is no way I can cook my favorite food in an hour or less, but I do pride myself in my scrambled eggs.
Tumblr media
Growing up in the Czech Republic, scrambled eggs were not an omnipresent morning food. The few times I had encountered them, it was the overcooked, aged, greyish, and overall disgusting kind.
One day, I surreptitiously tried to make the scrambled eggs ‘the right way,’ and I was blown away by the explosion of velvety buttery egg flavor in my mouth. I’ve been a proud scrambled cook ever since.
Tumblr media
I like to make scrambled eggs very simply. No fancy ingredients taking over the taste; just eggs, butter, salt, pepper, and sometime cream or milk.
PROCESS truly is the key. You have to let the ingredients interact in the right order, with regards to time, and with regards to the heat applied. I made a little graph for you.

letter 3 | imagine yourself as a bird and make you as an origami
First, I made a crane as every Japanese kid would.
Tumblr media
Second, I made a bird of me.
The lesson was to use the history to our advantage. To make our lives easier by
letting the dead people do the work for us (Peter Lang)
So I made the 'bird base' to have a historically proven starting point, and just played with it to arrive at my bird.
It's wings are spread, cause it SOARS; duh.

Letter 0 | Ethos, The
I found this intriguing online course... Design 101, or, as Twitter has it, @design1o1
Ironically, I joined at the moment when the course was technically over. The first video I watched after the 'trailer' was the Farewell.
But the course materials will be up until April. So I have about 2 months to finish the course that was meticulously designed for 3 months (everyday assignments). There's 101 assignments. I know I can do it.
Will I?
- - -
less poetically:
I like the online platform, and I will submit my works up there, but who knows what happens to all the submissions when the course is over. It's never good to have all eggs in one basket. That being said,
medium not the message anymore. community is the message ~@stefi_idlab
