I'm an actor who has worked with intimacy coordinators very recently so I just want to clear up some massive misconceptions here. Emmerdale HAS intimacy coordinators (ICs for short hereafter), there was an IC for Robert's first episode back, it is in the credits. Tongue is allowed pre-watershed (why would that be restricted?) but ICs might say "does there NEED to be tongue here?" - they err on the side of "doing less" for the comfort of the actors. Open mouthed kissing is treated very differently from closed mouth kissing, even without tongue, and soaps do NOT get rehearsal times for scenes, so ICs would much prefer closed mouth for the sake of time - ideally intimacy is very well discussed, choreographed and rehearsed. Without that time, they err on the side of caution to make sure everyone is comfortable. They also might suggest closed mouth if one of the actors is sick but a kiss has to be done. It's also very possible that the actors (esp. Danny) are struggling with having an IC in the first place - they spent a long time not having one at all, and suddenly there are rules on how you kiss, how long for, how you move your heads and lips etc. And not every IC is as chill as mine was. The IC might be making them feel more awkward about it.

It’s good you said “as far as we’re aware they are straight” because I find it a bad idea to speculate about actors. We really have no idea at the end of the day. It is their job regardless so I don’t think sexuality even comes into play here. Also, I found Aaron’s kisses with Alex to be not bad to be honest. Obviously not great but way better than any kisses with John if I’m honest and not rushed like most other Aaron kisses but could definitely be down to the actor who played Alex leading it better.

I don't recall Aaron/Alex much bc I hate seeing Robert & Aaron w anyone but each other lol.

but yeah I'm sure there's lots of factors that play into it. I just personally would like their intimate scenes to feel a lil more natural and relaxed going forward!

I think by the end Ryan was the worse kisser. Like he stopped trying. He barely pressed his mouth down in a kiss. I hate their last kiss in the woods. It was bad.

yeah I think by that time Ryan was just ready for a break. I do also wish their last kiss was better than it was though, and I agree Ryan let the team down on those!

Danny has always struggled with on screen kissing, shockingly his kisses with Ryan are a marked improvement on any of his other on screen pairings. Which is one of the reasons I think the ship really took off, because we know Danny is a brilliant actor but he has never looked in any way comfortable kissing anyone other than Ryan, even though he’s obviously still a little awkward with Ryan. I think Ryan is actually good it’s just Danny doesn’t give him much to work with. The other issue is that it’s pre-watershed so they’re not allowed to use tongue or be too sexy (which makes it really difficult to portray different types of kisses). Maybe Danny is just a bad kisser in general (sorry Danny), maybe it’s the fact he’s straight, or maybe he’s just shy doing it on camera idk

for me it's not even about them using tongue, or being sexy, it's just about them looking natural & normal hahaha. I haven't watched Emmerdale in years but Em told me Vic & Jacob were together and I was like ??? so watched a few clips of that and like their kisses were goood (regardless of whether their characters were good together idk) so like, kisses can be done welll on a soap, the actors just have to commit. but also yes, it could just be that one or both of them are bad irl hahaha

They tried to sell John Aaron as very firey and passionate at first, but it was the weird head moving kisses (perfect description) that completely made it flop. Again it’s not like he turned down big kiss scenes, just did it weird. It’s weird that Danny got worst at ok screen kissing cos from 2015-16 it was good for two years. His ones pre Robert were all quite awkward. But surely you would get better over time lol. Ryan has been more consistently fine with every screen partner

yes, I agree that Ryan is consistently better. I do feel often that it's Danny who seems to equate passion with big, frenzied, over the top movements. or just pursed lips and I'll move my head a bit. but that's not kissing it's just rubbing their heads together. hahaha.

especially if you look at affair era, Ryan leads a lot of the kisses, opens his mouth and actually does it quite well.

but the 2017/2018/2019 stuff it often felt like they're trying to rush through the kisses too to just get them over with. they just need to slow it down a bit & go back to basics.

I think they need to just slow down their kisses. The bridge was definitely a face smash and I think it was because it was meant to seem like this frenzied passionate thing but maybe we just need heads slowly leaning in closer

YES. it seems like they're going with passion = frantic, whereas for me passion works better when it's intentional and intimate.

I had to go and look at my kisses gifset. I personally would say:

first kiss is the best, by far. most of the affair era are okay, but Ryan is heavy carrying in most of them. SSW after proposal. the "come on, you know how I feel about ya" one. Aaron's birthday in the back room. the wedding one in the garage, where the shot is on Aaron's face. February 2018 reunion is okay.

I also didn’t like the new kiss and felt bad cos everyone loved. Danny is specifically just face smashing (I don’t think Ryan is). I noticed with that some of his John kisses. I think it’s trying to do passion, but in early/mid Robron he didn’t and kissed normally

yeah, it looks a little like he's trying to overcompensate. he doesn't want to actually kiss, but thinks if he moves his head without actually opening his lips it'll look convincing? but it just looks awkward.

can we all have a word w them both and just be like PLS kiss normally. open your lips a bit, move them, you're there. congrats.
