i really need to talk about that “they won’t respect you” conversation, because this show is not messing around at all in the way it handles institutionalized sexism and it’s sort of really amazing?

what peggy did with jarvis’s file, knowing that it would portray her as incompetent says a lot about peggy— as a person, as a friend, as an agent dedicated to find out real truths, but as i’ve seen a lot of people point out, it also says a whole lot about her coworkers that they were so easily able to see it as genuine incompetence. they were talking about that file and how if jarvis knew they had it, he could walk free, literally right in front of peggy two minutes earlier. she has a history with howard stark. she’s really suspicious. but they don’t suspect she’s up to anything. of course she fucked up.

when peggy finds howard’s missing inventions, she’s talking as if this is something that’ll earn back their respect, that it’ll erase the way they think of her, that’ll make up for the earlier perceived incompetence. but that’s not the case. they don’t think she’s incompetent because of the incident with the file or anything she’s done.��she isn’t earning back respect;, she’s fighting to get it in the first place with people who would never consider giving it to her. 

peggy steals a file and makes a play for jarvis right under their noses, and she gets called incompetent. peggy could take out an entire fucking fleet of trained hydra operatives right in front of them and it’d still probably be ‘good enough for a woman’ at best. that’s the reality this show is painting for peggy. here’s this incredible, talented, smart, courageous woman doing ten times the work of her peers and it’s still not enough.

this isn’t a show about a woman overcoming sexism by proving herself. this is a show about portraying that’s not how it works. it’s a show about how her rights are ignored and her ‘wrongs’ are amplified. it’s a show about how these men made up their mind about her and don’t want to change it. it’s a show about how sexism isn’t about what women are doing wrong or need to right. the sexist assholes are the ones stubbornly in the wrong here. shots. fired.
