Since Daredevil’s debut on Netflix, Marvel fans have been patiently waiting for The Defenders series. On August 18th, Marvel Comics’ finest street-level heroes will finally come together on the popular streaming service. For the first time ever we will see Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist unite in live action. They will be teaming up to protect New York City from an ancient ninja order known as the Hand. With the Hand now coming out in full force, Daredevil’s mentor Stick tells his pupil to assemble a group of heroes to combat it. So before you start watching the show on Friday, here is a rundown of key points that brought this unlikely team together in the MCU.
Click for the below Next page Daredevil: The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen
The Daredevil series got things rolling, as lawyer Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) goes on a crusade of justice against those making Hell’s Kitchen, well, a living hell. Things got interesting when foes Wilson Fisk (The Kingpin), and The Punisher entered the picture, along with the discovery of an even more sinister threat in the Hand. Last season saw Daredevil make some big decisions that will end up haunting him during his time with the Defenders. He parted ways with his best friend and partner Foggy who didn’t agree with his vigilante ways and also watched his love interest Elektra be killed by the Hand to only be resurrected by the same evil group. So expect to see Hell’s Kitchen’s protector deal with a lot during this series.
Jessica Jones: The Detective
Jessica Jones followed up Daredevil in 2015, and the series was slow with a ton of emotional plot twist. Krysten Ritter proved to be an excellent Jessica Jones, who’s character had a backstory that pushed the limits of what we thought Marvel could do storyline wise. The 13 episode-series explored her tight friendship with Patsy Walker (or as comic fans know her, Hellcat), the dirty investigative work she does for attorney Jeri Hogarth (who will also be appearing in Defenders) her law firm, and a crucial camaraderie with Malcolm; a junkie neighbor tricked into spying on her.
With all the bad things in her life nothing was worse than Kilgrave (a.k.a. The Purple Man, played by David Tennant)—the MCU’s best villain in my humble opinion, whose mind-controlling powers gave us one of Marvel’s scariest villains to date. Jessica ended up overcoming his mind control, and killing him.
Hogarth was able to get her off the charges, and Jessica found herself in high demand for Alias Investigations. Seeing how all of this new attention and her alcohol addiction unfold will be interesting in the Defenders.

Luke Cage: The Man With Unbreakable Skin
Luke Cage was Netflix and Marvel’s next series, bringing Mike Colter back as the title character after having been introduced in Jessica Jones. Here, he tried to set an example for Harlem while attempting to escape his own past. The series gave us a comic-loyal depiction of how he got his superpowers through a prison experiment—powers he’ll be using as the Defenders‘ heavy-hitter.
The Iron Fist: The Protector of K’un-Lun
Iron Fist is the most recent show to come to the table, and unlike the previous series’, it was given lackluster ratings from fans and critics. With that being said, it’s apparent Marvel will look for Finn Jones’ redemption in the Defenders. Since Danny Rand is the sworn enemy of the Hand, we should see his character development and storyline take leaps and bounds. The Iron Fist series focused on Rand returning to New York City after being raised in K’un Lun where as a child, a plane crash took his parents lives. After winning the mantle of The Iron Fist, Danny abandoned the mystical city to reclaim Rand Industries.
Although the show was Marvel/Netflix’s worst of the four, it did give a deeper insight into Hand’s different leaders, like Madame Gao and Bakuto.
Stick: The Teacher

Stick (Scott Glenn) is Daredevil’s teacher and basically the Nick Fury of the Netflix corner for the MCU. He was mentor to both Daredevil and Elektra, as sworn warriors to take down the Hand. His role in the Defenders will grow much larger as he’s the one who tells Daredevil to assemble a team to fight off the cult.
Alexandra: The Mystery Woman in White
There’s a lot of mystery surrounding Sigourney Weaver’s character Alexandra, since she was introduced to the MCU. She’s been called “regal” by showrunner Marco Ramirez, and hints have led us to believe she is the prime leader of the Hand, evidenced by her meeting with Madame Gao. It was made pretty clear Alexandra is running things when we saw her speaking down to Madam Gao, hence the reason Stick needs to form this crew.
Madame Gao: The Mother of Cranes
We assumed Mademe Gao was the Big Cheese of the Hand, the mystery surrounding her made us think she was pulling all the strings. However, with Alexandra apparently calling the shots, Gao’s true role came in doubt. Gao was last seen making a deal with Davos, who wants Danny dead, which let us know she’s not small time at all. Gap hinted that she was as ancient as K’un Lun itself during her exchange with The Iron Fist, putting into perspective just how powerful she and Alexandra are. No matter what her role is in the Hand, she is definitely a force to be reckoned with.

Elektra: The Assassin
Elektra is alive and kicking, thanks to the Hand. Stick knows this could mean a lot to the battle lines he’s drawn between the Chaste and the Hand. Although we aren’t sure who her allegiance is to, her return and lust for blood spells bad news for Matt and Stick. They know all too well that a Black Sky, particularly one that is brainwashed and programmed to kill, isn’t someone to play with.
Obviously Daredevil’s emotional connection to Elektra will prove troublesome in him and his team fighting the Hand. The plot will thicken once Daredevil is unable to follow through with the plans that Stick has.
The Defenders premieres in its entirety on Netflix this August 18.
