I hadn't even considered the idea that the prophecy majik might actually like jikishirone (nor that she'd be living in their magic circle, interesting how it can go both ways) and I am very pleasantly surprised tbh!!! Really want to know more about them both

I really want the story to explore more agreeable relarionships between majiks and humans ngl, I have absolute faith in Osamu Nishi's writing so I'm sure we'll be getting more of this in the future

summer's ending :|

so each summer i draw a skts piece so i can measure whether i've improved. usually this means i'm pushing myself with lighting and background and stuff, and historically they've always been in a cuddly kind of pose, but this summer i put a lot of focus on some zine/event stuff (which i'm mostly happy with) and i'm kinda juiced in terms of full, rendered pieces. so here's a skts with a bit of an easier lighting scheme than usual.

this is also the fifth time i'm doing this (three and four are on my tumblr), marking four years of digital art for me. i wanted to do some kind of development comparison, but suffice it to say that this is significantly better than my full-power art a few years ago. my lines have become a lot more confident and my colour preferences still haven't changed, though i've gotten better at using them. the last time i tried to do this single, glowy light source, i wasn't a big fan, and this time it's okay.

yeah ! i'm kind of in the standards > skill part of the art wave right now, so that's the best i've got. i'd really like to avoid, like, years-long art burnout, so managing that is my resolution until year 5/skts 6. see ya!

aughghgh im having. im having a great time [in anguish]. i loveeee learning that it's not just that kumugi is naturally meek, or even that kumugi changed because of bullying by spica (though this likely would've happened and was just accelerated); it's that kumugi was, in the past, a headstrong person with at least some self-confidence who just wanted to prove herself. which is fitting for a young child!! like of course even without the incident spica was doing everything to belittle kumugi, but we're still in the stage of kumugi's life where she has some inherent sense of ability and it's completely crushed.

she's not blind, either; she knows spica is punishing her, or at least she knows that spica doesn't have her best interests at heart, and she sees it as a rightful punishment. she dreads being around her. but in the end that just feeds her guilt. banger!!!!!!!!!!

they're so deeply compelling. spica is a perfect character to introduce into this cast of extremely discerning and powerful people, precisely because she herself is extremely discerning but in a different way. i love watching her think and machinate; i love how clearly certain she is that this plan will work because, if not for ichi, she'd be completely correct. (barring objection from dess or anyone else, of course, but i really love that it's not that ichi objects but rather that he gives kumugi the strength to. like that's so scary!!! but she can't keep being told that she needs to rely on others because she's incapable!!!!!! perfect.)

other notes:

confirmed that gokuraku is a diplomatic little lad :) him and dess getting on fine while ichi is both way too intimidating and way too exhausted is flawless skjdfhs

i'm pretty sure that dess was signing "the gifted..." on her book. we love to see it

kumugi wanted to study medical magic!! you have to wonder if she was at all motivated by that incident. perhaps she hopes to somehow help spica, or maybe she just believes that that's where she's most likely to help and least likely to hurt. it seems like a pretty distinct choice.

in terms of design, this was a really good chapter to brush ichi's hair out of his face because it more heavily contrasts spica having half her face covered in their set of panels!! then of course it's squinty, fake-smile eyes against ichi's open, honest ones. i've already seen someone comment on how spica causes kumugi to shrink while ichi brings her back. delight

i also just. really really like spica's design. the eyepatch gives the wonderful opportunity to only show her patched side which highlights how she conceals her emotions. her smile is so damn fake. her mouth has a single shape and it never changes. perfect. and it's interesting that while her hair sweeps over her right side, it doesn't conceal much. she's not really trying to hide the patch, which says-- a lot!!! that she's confident, unashamed, and feels she can leverage it to her advantage. and that she cares about that appearance likely more than her own feelings on it, or that her feelings simply revolve around its use.

i am also really curious about the 'i can use magic better than you can' line. that could easily be one sibling blustering to another, but it could also be true. by this time with their different trainings i doubt it matters much, but it'd be interesting to see whether spica had motivations to belittle kumugi specifically. augh i'm just mourning that if the accident hadn't happened and kumugi had been given a little space to grow, they probably could've had a normal love-hate sibling relationship.

edit: ahh, i missed that kumugi listed 'magic use' as something spica is better at, so unless there's a weird translation thing, it was probably just normal kid blustering (or kumugi is just putting herself down in her narration). the mourning remains tho
