Parrotfish (Subfamily Scarinae)
Colorful like a tropical bird and with a beak-shaped mouth to match, Parrotfish are the reef's cleanup crew! They nibble on dead coral and algae all day, helping keep reefs healthy and thriving. Found in warm oceans, they even help create white sand beaches, yep, their coral crunching turns into sand. Some even make a protective “slime sleeping bag” at night to stay safe. Weird? Maybe. Awesome? Definitely!

Arapaima (Arapaima gigas)
If there were a contest for the largest freshwater fish, Arapaima would be a top contender! This Amazonian giant can grow over 3 meters long and weighs over 200 kilograms. Despite its size, it’s a gentle swimmer with beautiful dark green scales tinged with red. What’s extra cool is that it can actually breathe air, it has a lung-like organ and surfaces to gulp oxygen. Watching it swim feels like seeing a living dinosaur!

Coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae)
Meet the living fossil, Coelacanth! Thought to be extinct for over 65 million years, it shocked the world when one was found alive in 1938. This deep-sea giant lives near Africa and Indonesia, and its dark, armor-like scales and weird limb-like fins make it look like something out of a prehistoric movie. It’s slow, mysterious, and a total superstar in the science world for helping researchers understand evolution. Seriously cool!

Fancy Betta (Betta Fish) (Betta splendens)
Fancy Bettas are like runway models of the fish world! With flowing fins and a burst of colors ranging from metallic purple to fiery red, they’re showstoppers. But behind those glamorous looks, they’ve got a feisty attitude, they're territorial and love to flare their fins in style. Still, they’re easy to care for and love showing off to their owners. No wonder there are beauty contests just for these aquatic divas!

Discus Fish (Symphysodon aequifasciatus)
Discus fish are basically the beauty queens of the freshwater world. With their round, flat bodies and dreamy color patterns, like blues, reds, and yellows they swim with elegance and grace. They love hanging out in groups and add a peaceful vibe to any aquarium. Even cooler: their babies actually feed on a special slime from their parents’ skin. It’s like a heartwarming fishy version of a baby bottle!

Flowerhorn (Louhan)
This fish is like an underwater celebrity! With its bright patterns and iconic forehead bump (called a "nuchal hump"), it instantly grabs attention. It’s a man-made hybrid, so you won’t find it in the wild, but it’s super popular in home aquariums. Flowerhorns are friendly, can recognize their owners, and love interaction. People say they bring good luck too! Each one has a totally unique pattern, kind of like a fingerprint, talk about one-of-a-kind!

Mandarin Dragonet (Synchiropus splendidus)
Imagine a tiny fish that looks like a swimming rainbow, that’s the Mandarin Dragonet! Found in coral reefs in the Pacific, it’s small but absolutely dazzling with its mix of electric blue, orange, and green swirls. It’s super shy and only eats live, tiny critters, so it takes a bit of pampering. But its colors are so magical, people can’t help but fall in love. Fun fact: its bright blue color isn’t a light trick, it’s the real deal!

Super Red Arowana (Scleropages formosus)
This fiery red beauty from Kalimantan is often called the “dragon fish” and it totally lives up to the name! With its long body, shiny red-gold scales, and graceful movements, it looks like a majestic creature straight out of a legend. A bit of a loner, this fish doesn’t like sharing its space, which just adds to its fierce charm. In many Asian cultures, it's believed to bring luck and wealth. No surprise that it's worth a fortune, some even call it the fish of millionaires!

Leafy Seadragon (Phycodurus eques)
Straight out of a fantasy world, the Leafy Seadragon looks like a swimming seaweed! Found along the southern and western coasts of Australia, this amazing creature blends perfectly with its surroundings thanks to its leaf-like fins. Though it looks fragile, it’s actually a skilled swimmer, slow but graceful. One of the coolest facts? It’s the dads that carry the babies on their tails until they hatch! With its incredible camouflage and gentle nature, the Leafy Seadragon is nature’s underwater masterpiece.

Black Ghost Knifefish (Apteronotus albifrons)
The name says it all! This fish is sleek, shadowy, and moves like a ninja. Native to South America, it has a long, dark body that glides through the water using one ribbon-like fin underneath. It’s most active at night and uses gentle electric pulses to “see” in the dark. Yep, it has built-in radar! With no dorsal fin and a calm, elegant vibe, this fish is pure underwater cool.
