On Wednesday 8th November, South African Airlink AVRO RJ85 flight SA8103 from Harare to Johannesburg suffered uncontained engine failure in flight which damaged adjacent engine and fuselage. The South African Airways Airlink aircraft with 34 passengers on board departed Harare, Zimbabwe, and later made an emergency landing at O. R. Tambo International Airport, South Africa at 20:39L. Nil injuries . After assessing damage the crew decided to fly the aircraft with the remaining two serviceable engines to Johannesburg where it landed safely. . "On behalf of Airlink I apologie profusely to our passengers and their loved ones for any distress and inconvenience as a result of this evening’s event" said Rodger Foster, Airlink Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director. . #flight #aviation #flightsafety #airlink #southafrica

You might remember we shared quite a bit of Boeing 737 guff on its 50th birthday (maiden flight, 9 April 1967). Here's one more; the 17 launch customers individually christening the aircraft. . #history #aviationhistory #boeing #boeing737 #crewlife #airbus http://fat.ly/26z68 [ Instagram ]

Iconic photo from 1951 entitled "The Art of Travel" by photographer Norman Parkinson. It perfectly captures a time when travel was elegant and classy. Pictured is Wenda Parkinson photographed waiting for the Hermes plane to be repaired at Nairobi airport. It still sold as a print. Helen Richey (1909 - 1947) was a pioneering female aviator and the first woman to be hired as a pilot by a commercial airline in the United States. . In 1934, Central Airlines, a Greensburg, Pennsylvania-based carrier (that eventually became part of United Airlines) hired Richey as a pilot; she made her first regular civil flight with them on December 31, taking a Ford Trimotor on the Washington to Detroit route. She eventually was forced to step down from the cockpit by the all-male pilots union. . After leaving Central Airlines, Richey continued to perform at air shows. In 1936 she teamed with Amelia Earhart in a transcontinental air race, the Bendix Trophy Race. Richey and Earhart came in fifth, beating some all-male teams. Later, Richey flew with the British Air Transportation Auxiliary during World War II. . In addition to being the first female commercial airline pilot, Richey also was the first woman sworn in to pilot air mail and one of the first female flight instructors. . Richey died in her apartment in New York City on the 7th January 1947, apparently from a pill overdose. Her death was ruled a suicide. . #history #aviationhistory #flight #crewlife #BeBoldForChange #HelenRichey #ameliaearhart #girlpower #airline #airlines #flighttraining #flyingtraining http://fat.ly/26yqr [ Instagram ]

Gladys Roy and Ivan Unger play tennis while mid-flight, 1925. Roy was a popular barnstormer, parachute jumper, and wingwalker in the 1920s. She danced the Charleston perched atop the wing of a biplane, and walked across blindfolded. She's probably most famous for her stunt with Ivan Unger (above), in which the two played (or pretended to play) tennis on the wing of a biplane in flight. . In August 1927, Roy was in Youngstown, Ohio, performing in an exhibition, and preparing for a New York-to-Rome flight with Lieutenant Delmar Snyder. She was having her picture taken with an Ohio beauty contestant. With the photoshoot nearly finished, she fired up the donk, stepped down from the fuselage, and walked into the propeller. She was 25 years old. . #history #aviationhistory #crewlife #flightsafety #flighttraining #flyingtraining #flight #propellersafety #safety #GladysRoy #IvanUnger #wingwalking #viralnetics http://fat.ly/2Mvdh [ Instagram ]

The First 747 landing at Australia's Canberra Airport was on the 22nd November 1977. On route from Sydney to Melbourne there was a small fire in the main gear of an Alitalia Boeing 747-243B (registration I-DEMV), and the event forced an emergency landing at Canberra. . The passengers were transferred to Melbourne on TAA and Ansett DC9 aircraft. Qantas shipped in another engine via a '5 Engine' rescue; the second B747 to land at the airport (and the first for Qantas). . The TAA Ground Staff (pictured) are wearing the infamous 'teddy bear' uniform. . #sydney #melbourne #history #aviationhistory #qantas #alitalia #crewlife #viralnetics #flight #canberra #canberraairport #boeing747 http://fat.ly/3ssza [ Instagram ]

Model of proposed SST, in office of FAA Commissioner, Gordon M. Bain. The Boeing 2707 was the first American supersonic transport (SST) project. After winning a competition for a government-funded contract to build an American SST, Boeing began development at its facilities in Seattle, Washington. The design emerged as a large aircraft with seating for 250 to 300 passengers and cruise speeds of approximately Mach 3. It would have been much larger and faster than preceding SST designs such as Concorde. It never went ahead (despite more orders and interest than the Concorde). . #history #aviationhistory #boeing #boeing2707 #crewlife #faa #concorde http://fat.ly/3ssro [ Instagram ]

Snapshot of the aircraft accident we attended earlier today, 20th April, 2017, Piper Cherokee (VH-SWV) operated by Phoenix Aero Club (Camden). Accident appears consistent with a failure or partial failure after takeoff. There was debris on the roadway, including broken branches, consistent with reported flight path (by witnesses) of the aircraft through the tops of the trees (took plenty of photos for the ATSB before the area was completely contaminated). Aircraft came to rest almost dead-on the extended runway centerline (RW06). Details and cause unknown. . Hope the two pilots are doing okay. . #flightsafety #flyingtraining #crewlife #phoenixaeroclub #vhswv #camdenairport #aviationsafety #pipercherokee #flighttraining http://fat.ly/2Mull [ Instagram ]

QANTAS 747SP touches down in Wellington, 1981. On January 31, 1981, QANTAS 747SP VH-EAA flew from Sydney to Wellington on a route proving flight. Under the command of Captain Alan Terrell it landed at the windy city at 2pm local time. Hundreds of residents had gathered around the airport perimeter and on the surrounding hills to witness the event. TV New Zealand interrupted scheduled programs to broadcast live this historic arrival. . #sydney #newzealand #nz #qantas #boeing #boeing747 #history #aviationhistory #crewlife #flightsafety #boeing747sp #wellington #flight http://fat.ly/26wpy [ Instagram ]

"It is appearances, characteristics and performance that make a man love an airplane, and they, are what put emotion into one. You love a lot of things if you live around them, but there isn't any woman and there isn't any horse, nor any before nor any after, that is as lovely as a great airplane, and men who love them are faithful to them even though they leave them for others. A man has only one virginity to lose in fighters, and if it is a lovely plane he loses it to, there his heart will ever be" - Ernest Hemingway, August 1944. . #history #aviationhistory #crewlife #quote #quotes #ernesthemingway #flighttraining #flightsafety #viralnetics #military #enternetics #airplane #flight http://fat.ly/1qyjw [ Instagram ]
