How to Choose the Best Rubber Flooring Thickness for Your Athletic Space
Are you considering rubber flooring for your athletic space? Before you go ahead and install it, here is what you need to know regarding the thickness levels and recommended uses.
1/4” (6mm)
As one of the lightest rubber flooring options you can get, this level of thickness is ideal for the following areas:
Home gyms
Cardio zones
Yoga studios
Why should you consider using a 6mm thick rubber flooring? Areas that do not see a heavy amount of traffic and are typically meant for light exercise zones will benefit from a light rubber flooring material. What is a light exercise zone? An area only exposed to bodyweight exercises excluding the use of heavy-duty gym equipment.

Since this rubber flooring is thin, it is best used in environments such as home gyms and spin studios as these places are not exposed to heavy-duty use regularly. This thickness of rubber flooring often comes in the form of rubber mat rolls that protect and cushion you against harsh joint impact injuries.
5/16” (8mm)
Light commercial gyms and most home gyms or recreation centres are the ideal locations for this level of thickness for your rubber flooring. Why would you need an 8 mm thickness? Rubber floors exposed to busier recreation centres or frequently used home gyms will stand up well to medium level use. This flooring can handle a higher weight than a 6 mm rubber floor so you won’t have to worry about damaging the surface in your gymnasium. This is one of the least expensive options for rubber flooring, therefore, you will be happy you went with this thickness.
3/8” (9.5mm)
This type of rubber flooring thickness is ideal for athletic spaces that are susceptible to high-traffic levels and can take on just about any weight levels you need. Your 9.5 mm rubber flooring can last years in gyms with heavy equipment and frequent use. Industrial spaces are perfect spots to install a thicker rubber floor due to the durability and minimal upkeep. Try this type of thickness out in a hockey arena and you can lesson extreme damage to your floor.
1/2” (12mm)
Have you dropped your dumbbells on the ground? Not to worry as with 1/2” thick rubber flooring, you are ready for just about anything to fall on your floor without causing damage. You could have the busiest gym in the world with Olympic lifting, cross-fit or even hockey events and you can relax knowing it will last when made from ultra-durable rubber.
Multiple-use rubber tiles, rolls, and stall mats are available to help cushion your equipment or your feet. Try changing the look of your athletic space by using a variety of rubber flooring options in different spots. Put rolls in your gym, mats in your yoga studio or office and use rubber tiles for the change rooms. Versatility is what rubber flooring is all about.
