The Things That Stay - a WIP novel: read ongoing draft here

New Year’s Eve, 1985. While the rest of California counts down with champagne and resolutions, Tulsi Dulari and Simon Ganfrey are staring down a future long since forfeited. Tulsi—a withdrawn, prickly, shut-down biochem dropout—has been stuck behind the Pulmonary Ward’s reception desk for months, her med school ambitions crushed under the inertia of a life indefinitely put on pause. Simon—high-strung, lonely, and chronically ill—has learned to treat every moment as borrowed. He takes what he can get…until he doesn’t.  When the patient in Room 210 flatlines during an understaffed graveyard shift, Tulsi expects nothing more than paperwork and a smoke break—until roped into post-resuscitation bedside duty. What begins as a reluctant exchange in the CCU becomes an unconventional, deeply strange entanglement: an ongoing exchange of IOUs, mixtapes, scars, meals. From vending machine heists and lung collapse to road trips, panic attacks, and glow-in-the dark ceiling stars, they are dragged—sometimes kicking and screaming—into a connection that could be the difference between life and death for the both of them.  Spanning one impossible year, The Things That Stay is a story of risky bets, reluctant grace, and the fragile, ferocious ways we care when there’s nothing left to promise. When every step is taken in the shadow of loss, why not take the scenic route together?
