Villainess is a Fangirl [Visual Novel Devlog 1]

Hihi! I'm going to make a visual novel for the Sealed With A Kiss Jam 2025 - itch.io . I'm bursting to talk about it even though development hasn't quite started, so I'm making these blog posts just to get it out of my chest.

Idea

Villainess is a Fangirl - inspired by those 'villainess in an otome game' webnovels and manga and premises like the BL manhua I Ship My Rival X Me and Kiss Him, not me, this VN will be about Alexis who finds a mysterious phone as a child. She plays the otome game that resembles her world in the future, and where her 16-year-old self is a cruel villainess who bullies the protagonist. She hates this doppelganger and swears to be better than her.

She discovers the amazing world of the internet and forums and becomes her game's (self-proclaimed) biggest fan as an anonymous user Failexis.

Unexpectedly, the day that the otome game gets an anime adaptation coincides with Alexis's first day at the exorcist academy. Turns out that her school life is being broadcasted to hundreds of thousands of people in an alternative universe, and with the knowledge of the game, she has the power to rewrite the narrative of the show.

Routes and Gameplay

Ironically, this is also a romance visual novel, since it's for a romantic game jam. Alexis has three love interests- the original protagonist of the otome game, the prince she is betrothed to and the twist villain.

Alexis could act as a typical villainess (ohohoho etc), or break character and do 'unvillainess' things and shock others.

Genre, Vibes

As you might kinda tell, this VN is going to be a comedy. But as I started fleshing out the (fake) otome game's lore, the setting of the original game can be quite dark. There could be some dramatic moments. I have no idea how this will turn out, but crossing my fingers.

Realidea system is a dating sim. (playthrough pt. 1)

Just going to make little entries about my playthrough of Realidea system fangame.

At the beginning of the game, when Elliot wanted to meet you on this romantic cliff with pokemon flying around and marked it on his calendar, I thought that he was going to confess to the player lmao. Unfortunately, he wants to leave the village to become a photographer. Fortunately, he subtly manipulates the player into joining him by using the 'Trainer' dream against him.

Elliot either wants a free bodyguard (he travels without a single pokemon for quite a while!), or this game is just a very long date/honeymoon between player and Elliot and everything else is sidequests. He goes on a forest walk (date) and gives you a gift- player (Jasper) is the shonen protag while Elliot is the harem/ dating sim protagonist. Guy straight up runs into girls and Alba calls him a 'nice guy'. There are cutscenes where the player 'steals' girls from bootleg edgy N, but don't be fooled by his cinnamon roll vibe- Elliot is the true alpha rizzlord with a pink beanie.

I named my character Jasper before I saw that the village is named Jasper village. I guess his parents were creatively bankrupt. I proceeded to name all my pokemon after gems/ stone formations, and it was scary knowing that all towns are literally named after gemstones so one of these pokemon could be accidentally named after a town just like their trainer. Lapis (Magikarp) fell first. I was going to name a Morelull Amethyst but stopped in time.

While playing fangames, I like giving my protags personalities and inner dialogue. So, Jasper starts out going on a journey not because he wants to be the best trainer, but because he's single. He hits on every single NPC. This game makes it easy, haha.

You bet I checked every single trashcan I can find. This game takes every opportunity to roast my kind.

Currently in Lapis town, trying my best to skip time because of plot. Gonna make a more structured update now that I learned how to take photos and stuff.

After using the lavatory, Heismay heads to the meeting room.

Heismay: “What’s all the excitement abo-!” He can recognize the slimy, long and wriggling abomination anywhere - a sandworm.

Heismay: “N-not this again! S-stay back or I will show no mercy!”

On reflex, his trembling hand glides to the hilt of his sword. He is about to lash out when he finally registers the ‘intruder’s’ face.

Heismay: “Oh, it’s you, Hulkenberg. Why is your appearance that of one of those heinous creatures?”

Junah: “Ahahahaha! Well, this is glorious.”

Junah, who has been standing by the side the whole time, cracks up. Heismay shoots her a nonplussed look. Surely, the Nidia lady must, too, be involved in this devious prank. The knight replies, stoic-faced.

Hulkenberg: “I’m not Hulkenberg. As of today, you may call me… Hulkenbug.”

Junah keels over.

Junah: “Hulkenbuh- hahahahaha!”

By now, the initial feeling of shock and annoyance has worn off, and Heismay shakes his head at his younger teammates’ antics.

Making a fake dating show on Elnea Kingdom

While I was trying to matchmake the princess, I decided to make it like the plot of one of those dating reality shows by introducing her to multiple single guys at once. I thought it would be fun to put it together and share, so here it is :D

It's a work in progress and there's three episodes in this doc. I've written four and still have so much drama to cover. As of writing the post, Princess Ariel hasn't chosen anyone yet, and I'm going to continue until she does!
