"Step Into Street Culture Sneakertopia is a colourful, larger-than-life sneaker and street culture exhibition that celebrates the art and history of sneakers and much, much more! Born on the streets, sneaker culture has since been driven by artists, athletes and celebrities who express their creativity and passion through sneakers and their designs. Whether status symbols or markers of identity, there is no denying the role of sneakers in defining pop and street culture today but this phenomenon is about more than just sports, hip-hop and fashion. The 2023 Asian and Southeast Asian premiere of Sneakertopia at ArtScience Museum brings together local and international artists, creatives, contributors and brands in a striking exhibition that features over 100 limited-edition sneakers alongside murals, installations, designs and original artworks. These presentations illustrate crossovers into related street culture genres of art, entertainment and technology.

The ongoing research project of which EoE Triptych #1 forms a part builds on parallel obsessions with cosmology, deep time and post-apocalyptic scenarios. Reacting to contemporary disaster rhetoric - the end of humanity or post-terrestrial escapology – the work presents the unavoidable future and inescapable apocalypse of the end of the Universe. The human sense of permanence and significance leads us to imagine futures where we are present, having found ways to dominate nature and conquer space.

FAPESC
The FLUX Art Festival has found a prominent partner in FAPESC, the scientific and technological research foundation of the state of Santa Catarina. Their institutional support is not only on paper but has been proved day after day through consultancy, networking, and practical assistance. According to the principles written in Santa Catarina’s 1989 constitution, FAPESC’s objective is to improve the population’s quality of life by “fostering innovation, scientific research and technology, the advancement in all areas of knowledge and regional stability.”

Meeting with Professor Sergio Luiz Gargioni and Caroline Heidrich Seibert (FAPESC).
When it comes to the Brazilian landscape of technology, science, and innovation, all 26 of the nationwide research support foundations, the FAPs (Fundações Estaduais de Amparo à Pesquisa) play a fundamental role. Together they compose the Brazilian National Council for State Funding Agencies (CONFAP), and their activities comprise the funding and support of research, innovation, human resource capacity building, and scientific knowledge disclosure. In terms of international cooperation, CONFAP’s members have established several partnerships with the United Kingdom, China, Finland, Russia, Canada, Ireland, Belgium, and other European countries. Thus, the council collaborates with federal and international funding agencies, such as the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education, (CAPES), the Research and Projects Financing (FINEP), the Newton Fund from the UK, and the Horizon 2020 programme of the European Commission.

We highly appreciate the support from our festival’s patron Professor Sergio Luiz Gargioni, director of both organizations, the state foundation FAPESC and the national council CONFAP (from 2013–2017) and his team. Professor Gargioni sees FLUX Art Festival’s role in the communication between the scientific community and the public as rendering the often-complex research content to be more accessible to a larger audience.

SAPIENS PARQUE

El Patrol is proud to announce that its Brazilian branch will be based in one of Florianópolis’ most ambitious innovation centers, the “Sapiens Parque.” Designed to foster the convergence of knowledge, ideas, and projects to boost economic, social, technological, and environmental development – Sapiens Parque is an excellent location for our agency. Their agenda of creating “differentiated space that inspire the concept of “urban lab,” which seeks to combine innovation and sustainability by optimizing the use of resources as practical solutions in physical systems, communication, sustainable buildings etc.” matches perfectly with el Patrol’s philosophy. Moreover, Sapiens’ description: “Science, art and environment work together to generate innovative and successful experiences” is almost a blueprint of our project FLUX Art Festival. Known as “innovation incubators,” technological parks bring forward the emergence of Santa Catarina as Brazil’s “Silicon Valley.” With our cultural initiatives, we hope to contribute to a creative environment.

Ladies Power in Sapiens Parque: Zoe Farac(el Patrol GmbH), Caroline Heidrich Seibert(FAPESC), Silviane Coelho de Souza(Sapiens Parque)

The partnership with Sapiens Parque includes a domicile for the construction of a research laboratory, where el Patrol’s artistic contribution to FLUX Art Festival can be developed and tested. The interdisciplinary project “PLANET A” is designed as a Swiss-German-Brazilian collaboration and seeks the interplay between art and science, where modern technology combines with an artistic vision of the future of nutrition. The creation of various operative algae sculptures is a crucial factor for the artists’ aim to address prospective questions on sustainability, urban food production, and related possibilities in space travel.

PARQUE DA LUZ

FLUX became friends with the “amigos do parque da luz” and we had the pleasure of establishing an important partnership with their association; FLUX’s permanent art space will be built on the parking lot of this beautiful city park. Due to the central location and proximity to the town’s most famous landmark, “Parque da Luz” will be the perfect place for the festival’s headquarters.
The park's history reflects the festival’s agenda and is a remarkable example of what can be achieved through citizen movements. The “Associação dos Amigos do Parque da Luz” was founded in 1997 and successfully saved the historically important area from financial speculation and urbanistic disaster. Through community action, trees were planted and the abandoned area was slowly transformed into the charming park it is today.

Flux Art Festival Managing Director Zoe Farac with Amigos do Parque da Luz
FLUX’s permanent art and event space could contribute to preserving the achievements of the past and to passing on the spirit for new generations. The cultural activities will make the natural richness of Parque da Luz accessible to a young audience so that they can discover it and learn to love and protect it. We hope our partners from the city government as well as the newly elected administration will re-approve the project and provide the necessary licenses to start construction this year.
