How easy is it to master a field you're passionate about? Is it crucial for success, whether in starting a business or advancing your career? Robert Greene, in his book Mastery, says: “Mastery is not a function of genius or talent. It is a function of time and intense focus applied to a particular field of knowledge.” This means if you want to become a video editor, writer, or hairdresser, dedication and focused effort will eventually lead to mastery and success, translating into more opportunities and growth. However, Scott Adams, in How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, offers another view. He built the famous comic Dilbert by combining mediocre skills: “None of my skills are world-class, but when my mediocre skills are combined, they become a powerful market force.” In a fast-changing world, should you focus deeply on one field or build a portfolio of skills? I believe both are important. I specialised in philosophy but also expanded into storytelling, marketing, and web development. This helped me build a business and opened new opportunities. Master one field, but also develop additional skills to stand out. Combining skills can create something unique, just like Scott Adams did with his comic.

Are you struggling to turn your business goals into reality?
A clear and effective strategy might be the missing piece.
Creating a strong strategy is essential for small business success. Drawing from Richard Rumelt’s insights in “Good Strategy/Bad Strategy,” let’s explore what makes a strategy effective.
Imagine you’re a freelance writer aiming to attract more clients. Simply wanting more clients isn't a strategy, it's more of a goal.
Rumelt emphasizes three key elements:
• Diagnosis: Identify and understand the core challenges.
Example: If you're struggling to get clients, determine if the issue is your marketing approach, pricing, or service quality.
• Guiding Policy: Develop an approach to address these challenges.
Example: If marketing is the issue, focus on improving your online presence and leveraging social media.
• Coherent Actions: Implement actions that align with the guiding policy.
Example: Create a content calendar for social media, update your website, and engage with potential clients online.
Whether you're a freelancer, hairdresser, or consultant, clear objectives and actionable plans are key to overcoming obstacles and achieving growth.
Think of strategy as careful diagnosis. Understand your challenges, outline policies to address them, and implement coherent actions. This thoughtful approach helps steer your business towards success.
