FMP Week 12
Everything is done yay :) I finished my animatic and added sound. I got some really helpful feedback from my alpha crit that I’m excited to use in my final animation. I’m also excited to make all the backgrounds for this project as throughout the last two and a half years they’ve really become a little passion of mine. I’m really glad I chose the technical tests that I did, I feel as if I’ve learnt a lot especially in the realm of after effects and choreo. I think for next semester it would be a good idea to find people who don’t already know my idea to watch my animatic through so I can make sure my story is comprehensive enough because I fear with all my flashbacks and forwards and flashy dance scenes the story may end up getting lost, but again I’ll experiment with that soon.
I’m also very glad by how efficient I was this semester, I’m usually the kind of person who leaves a lot of the work to the final week but this time I think I really managed my work effectively which I’m very glad for. I’m also happy with the development my main character has had, especially her new blue and yellow colour scheme I did around week 8 or 9.
my technical process has definitely evolved a lot in these last three weeks and I’m excited to start production on the project!

FMP Week 11
for this week I’ve almost finished my storyboard! Soon I’ll be able to use after effects to make it into a animatic with a song my friend is making for me. I’d like to use after effects because I think it’ll be a really valuable skill to use in the future, and I always need more aftereffects practice.
In areas of my storyboard there’s large chunks of dancing and fighting, so I’ve been doing a little bit of choreography which was quite interesting. I went to a concert for Hatsune Miku recently, as mentioned before, which definitely helps as I have videos of her dancing in the style I would like to replicate that I can use as reference. I ended up doing a couple key poses for each fight/dance so it makes sense in the animatic, also so i can remember what moves I want for each scene.
I’ve also finished my final technical test, my fight scene, which ended up a little longer than I expected which is fun.
obviously it needs some tweaks and improvements, especially in the beginning parts but I achieved what I wanted in my technical test, which was to block out the important movements and improve my choreo skills, and it will be cool to have an almost fully animated scene in my animatic.

FMP Week 10
this week I started my final technical tests, as well as starting my storyboard. I did this by first drawing a frame for every scene in my outline. I then drew in frames between eat scene, fleshing out the scenes as I went. This was good because it means I wouldn’t get overwhelmed from starting from the beginning and working linearly to the end. for my last technical test I want to block out a little 10 second fight scene. I think this will help me figure out my overall style as well as help improve my animation. Finally I think blocking out this complex section with a lot of movements will help me with my timing next semester.

FMP Week 9
This week I focused on completing my first two technical tests. I planned to do a run cycle first of all, and then add lighting effects in after effects. i started with sketching out the main movement of the legs first, as it would be easier to add the secondary motions afterward. I then sketched the hair, bangs, arm and shirt movement. When I was happy with this I lined and coloured. I think overall I’m very happy with how it turned out, the movement was smooth and I tried a couple of different line art styles before I picked my final style. (Much thicker on the outside lines and super thin on the inside). Awesome, my first test is done.
Next I exported the sequence into after effects. I had a few video tutorials I had saved previously to help me learn how to light my animation. In the end I ended up with a cool hard rim shadow and some colourful soft lights. This also gave me the opportunity to mess around with lighting colors, and to see what colours looked the coolest together.
This was good because one of my biggest struggles with previous projects was the lighting, I could never figure out how to make it look good, but now I can do it all in after effects it will make my final project look much better.

FMP WEEK 8 (PT 2)
This week we developed our traditional concept art in Photoshop.
I'm really happy with the textures traditional art brings to a piece, especially pastels. I found that lighting especially however is much easier to do digitally, as well as adding smaller details. I also started developing my final concept art piece but it's taking more time than I thought so I haven't been able to complete it in time for the hand-in, but it'll be done before the end of next week I'm sure. I really like the combination of pastels and digital art I've been doing.

Bassini's work blends technical precision with imaginative world-building, which is evident in his detailed environments and concept designs. He is based in Florence, Italy, and is active on platforms like ArtStation and Sketchfab for showcasing his work.
I personally really enjoy his background style, especially his colour palettes. I would definitely like to incorporate some of his style quirks into my own concept art. I really appreciate how much detail is put into his environments and the texture in his paintings. I especially enjoy the piece he did above, because it fits the vibe I plan to bring into my FMP very well, as well as how many colours he's stuffed into a bleak-looking street.
SeerLight (Ronald Kuang)
Digital artist, animator, and game developer
Based in Los Angeles, California SeerLight’s art is known for its intricate line work and vibrant color palettes, often incorporating themes from anime, vaporwave aesthetics, cyberpunk, and escapism. His works primarily depict architectural scenes, cityscapes, and landscapes, blending realism with surreal elements.
SeerLight frequently uses digital tools like Photoshop and Manga Studio to create illustrations. Many of his pieces also include subtle animations, such as moving clouds or pouring rain, to add depth and liveliness.
SeerLight draws heavily from Asian culture, anime, and films such as Spirited Away and Your Name. He combines nostalgic and futuristic aesthetics, often using blue and purple tones to create serene yet vibrant visuals. I especially appreciate how much detail gets put into every inch of the piece.
SeerLight is active on Instagram, Twitter, and other platforms where he shares his art. He also offers merchandise and prints through his online store and collaborates with brands like Vapor95 and Cucu Covers.
Daniel Taylor
Daniel Taylor developed an interest in art as a child and began working with digital tools like Photoshop at 14. He transitioned to full-time artistry in 2015, combining 2D and 3D techniques to craft surreal, emotionally evocative pieces.
Taylor has worked with several major clients, including Adobe, Marvel, Playboy, Mondo, and New Scientist. Some of his standout projects include posters for Marvel films like Thor: Ragnarok and collaborations for the Adobe MAX conference
Taylor's art is influenced by old comic book illustrations, particularly in the science fiction genre, and modern digital illustrators. He uses tools like ZBrush, KeyShot, and Photoshop, often layering digital renders with hand-drawn details to achieve his signature surreal effects
His works have been featured in galleries such as Galerie Sakura in Paris and events like the Stroke Art Fair in Munich. Taylor is represented globally by Début Art. This piece specifically is the exact colour palette in thinking about including on all my cityscape backgrounds, I would also like to incorporate his super black cell shading if I can find a way to make it work.

FMP WEEK 7
This week we started making some concept art traditionally. I made one linear drawing, one in coloured pencil, and one in pastels. My pastel one is definitely my favourite of the bunch. I started on a fourth in watercolour,m but I couldn't get it to look how I liked so I ended up unfortunately throwing it away.
Then at home we had to draw 3 (4 for me) more traditional pieces. I did one with charcoal, one with oil pastel, another with pastel and one with ink, out of these I think my ink one and my other pastel one were my favourites and along with my first pastel drawing ill develop these further.

FMP WEEK 6
My script is done!! I had a little bit of feedback for the layout but otherwise, it was good, I have also almost finished the beadboard but Balancing it out with the other work I have means it's on the backburner, plus it's not really needed quite yet so I can come back to it later.
I also went to a concert for an artist called Hatsune Miku and I got some really good reference images and videos for my project.

FMP WEEK 5
This week I've refined my outline and started my script! I think writing in the proper script layout is really hard but since I have no dialogue it's a little bit easier. I've also started making a little beatboard that follows the events of my outline.

FMP Week 4
Synopsis/Outline/Log Line
Log line
In a vibrant city where fame and danger collide, a mysterious rising pop idol moonlights as a vigilante, using her charisma and stealth to protect her fans from a shadowy criminal underworld, all while juggling the pressures of stardom and her secret identity.
Synopsis 1
In the depths of what seems like a long, metallic tube, the distant roar of cheering fans can be heard. It’s an exhilarating sound, filled with excitement and expectation. Suddenly, the floor jolts upward beneath us, and as we ascend, that sound swells, filling our hearts with a mix of joy and nerves. When we finally burst into the blinding light, the camera changes to show a young idol in centre stage, her heart racing as she faces a sea of thousands, each one a devoted fan.
She takes a deep breath, and her expression snaps into a radiant smile as the opening notes of her song echo through the arena. With every beat, she dances and sings, surrounded by a vibrant audience waving colourful light sticks, their joy electrifying the air around her. The atmosphere is alive, pulsing with energy and adoration, a moment of pure euphoria that seems almost surreal. Yet, amidst this celebration of music and fandom, the camera shifts its focus to a face hidden within the crowd—a member of the notorious gang known as "Cursed Garden."
As the camera zooms in, we notice a slight change in Maya’s expression, almost imperceptible to the untrained eye. This subtle shift foreshadows the chaos that is about to unfold. In a rapid cut, we watch a chaotic scene where Maya is fighting against the gang. This confrontation is fierce and violent; the gang has just returned from a robbery, each member clutching heavy sacks filled with stolen cash. The music from the idol's performance continues to play in the background, creating a haunting juxtaposition between the glamour of the concert and the gritty reality of Maya's struggles.
In a particularly fierce moment, Maya manages to block an attack from one of the gang members. Her fighting stance mirrors the fluidity of the idol’s dance routine, showcasing her incredible agility and skill, and taking the camera back to the stage and her performance, where she is striking similar moves. The song plays on, a constant reminder of the duality of her life—one of fame and adoration, the other marked by violence and danger. As the performance continues, the camera shifts, revealing the toll that this lifestyle takes on Maya. We see her arguing with her manager, her frustration palpable as she battles with the expectations thrust upon her.
Scenes of exhausting handshake events flash before us, where Maya is forced to smile for her fans, her eyes betraying the fatigue she carries. It becomes increasingly clear that beneath her glamorous public persona lies a tumultuous inner world. Just as the bridge of the song begins, we alternate between her exhilarating dance on stage and her solitary escape across the city rooftops. In those moments of freedom, her spirit lifts as she leaps through the urban landscape, seeking solace in the night sky.
One billboard catches our eye—a news story speculating about her meteoric rise to fame. It serves as a poignant reminder of the dual life she leads, the hidden struggles beneath the surface of her public persona. As she runs past, silhouetted against the vibrant city lights, the contrast of light and shadow paints a vivid picture of her journey, prompting questions about how she will reconcile these two conflicting worlds.
The camera glides behind a building, leading us back to the concert for nearly the last time. As we pan across the crowd, we see synchronized light stick dances and countless fans smiling, completely absorbed in the moment. The euphoria of the performance stands in stark contrast to the challenges that lie ahead. We then shift to what seems to be the future, where the gang member, Hemlock, exits the venue, only for Maya to leap off the top of the venue, determined to confront him one final time. The ensuing battle is intense and ferocious, a culmination of her struggles and determination.
In the end, against all odds, Maya barely emerges victorious, retreating into the shadows as flashing police lights draw nearer to apprehend the criminal.
Finally, we cut back to the stage for the performance's final moments. From behind, the camera watches as she takes a bow, the crowd erupting in applause once again. The camera cuts to her face, now out of breath and glistening with sweat, but still smiling. She starts to sway, fatigue overtaking her, and suddenly the camera is in her room, where she falls onto her bed, utterly spent. The scene cuts to black.
FIN
After handing this in i got some very helpful feedback from my teacher, mostly about showing Mayas character more through out my animation, so I rewrote it and came back with this
SYNOPSIS 2 (UPDATED!!!)
When we finally burst onto the stage, the lighting is dark and moody, with a single spotlight. The camera changes to show a young idol in center stage, her heart racing as she faces a sea of thousands, each one a devoted fan. The camera passes across the crowd to show the reactions of various individuals.
She takes a deep breath, and her expression snaps into a radiant smile as the opening notes of her song echo through the arena, at the same time colorful and bright lights turn on. With every beat, she dances and sings, surrounded by a vibrant audience waving flamboyant light sticks, their joy electrifying the air around her. Yet, amidst this celebration of music and fandom, the camera shifts its focus to a face hidden within the crowd—a member of the notorious gang known as "Cursed Garden”.
As the camera cuts to her and zooms in, we notice a slight change in Maya’s expression, almost imperceptible to the untrained eye. This subtle shift foreshadows the chaos that is about to unfold. In a rapid cut, we watch a chaotic scene where Maya is fighting against the gang in a dark alleyway, barely illuminated by neon lights and streetlamps.

As the performance continues, the camera shifts, revealing the toll that this lifestyle takes on Maya. We see her arguing with her manager, her frustration palpable as she battles with his expectations, a dog-like alien creature by her side, barking and growling at the manager in support. In the background we see a tv silently broadcasting a news story telling us gang activity is on the rise.
One billboard catches our eye—a news story speculating about her meteoric rise to fame. It serves as a poignant reminder of the dual life she leads, the hidden struggles beneath the surface of her public persona. Finally, we cut back to the stage for the performance's final moments. From behind, the camera watches as she takes a bow, the crowd erupting in applause once again. The camera cuts to her face, now out of breath and glistening with sweat, but still smiling. The alien dog-like creature runs in from offscreen and curls up in bed next to her. The scene cuts to black.

FMP Week 3
Character background time.
Girl who is an idol by night and a vigilante by also night.
Actual Name- Maya Voss/ fights with mic stand (quarterstaff/ pole-arm type weapon) Hana Supernova stage name
While on stage her personality is that of a typical idol, bubbly happy and innocent while also brimming with confidence and charm. She makes sure to spend a lot of time after her shows having meet and greets with her fans however only ever talking about them and not her. She skillfully dodges questions about her private life to the disapproval of her agency. When dealing with said agency she is standoffish and a little bit crude, clearly unhappy with the contract she signed as it ends up restricting her life more than she thought. She can often be seen by other employees/idols arguing with her agent about the hours she has to sink into public events and training sessions, and she quite often looks at the few other idols in her agency with pity.
She owns a little alien friend who supports her emotionally. They are the bestest of friends, and he can often be seen following her around the studio during rehearsals
When she enters her vigilante persona, she is cold and concentrated. She does this to relax her mind and forget about the reality of being an idol and her contract (as well as for the greater good of course) she often attacks with a mic stand, using it like a quarterstaff, as it’s something she has easy access to that can also be used as a weapon. Her movements are quick and calculated and one of her most helpful skills is her agility, which she has developed form her years of idol training, as well as some extra training she does on the side.
Here is a character turnaround I made.
Maya had always dreamed of the spotlight. When she was scouted by a talent agency promising fame and fortune, she thought it was her ticket to a fun and glamorous life. The reality of being an idol, however, quickly shattered her dreams. She had signed a contract that was far more than she bargained for. She would now only be known to the public as Hana Supernova, overnight sensation.
The rigorous training sessions drained her, the endless smiling and performing felt more like a prison than a playground, and the handshake events felt fake and forced. The agency demanded perfection, leaving little room for her own identity. Her relationship with them became tumultuous, filled with pressure and manipulation.
Desperate for a release, Maya took to the rooftops of her city at night. The cool breeze against her skin felt liberating as she jumped from one building to another, her body moving with a grace she never knew she had. The agility and strength she developed during her idol training had accidentally transformed her into something more.
But the nights soon revealed more than just a thrill. One evening, while perched atop a building, she noticed a young girl, no older than sixteen, being approached by a slick-looking recruiter. Memories flooded back as she recognized the predatory charm of the man—a mirror of her own past. Anger surged through her; she couldn’t let this happen to someone else.
With a fierce determination, Maya sprang into action. In a swift and unexpected move, she leapt down, startling the recruiter. Her unexpected presence and fierce words sent him scurrying off, leaving the girl wide-eyed and trembling. Maya knelt beside her, offering comfort and reassurance.
The girl, introduced as Lina, revealed her own aspirations to dance and sing, but the fear of losing her chance weighed heavily on her shoulders. That night, Maya understood something crucial: helping Lina brought her a sense of purpose she hadn’t felt in a long time.
Inspired by her encounter with Lina, Maya decided to embrace this new role. She became a vigilante of sorts, using her skills to protect the public from all sorts of trouble. By day, she continued her life as an idol, but by night, she transformed into something more—a guardian for the people of her city.
She roamed the city’s alleys and rooftops, always alert for signs of trouble. Whether it was rescuing a fellow aspiring artist from a shady deal or standing up against evil criminals, Maya found that each act of bravery not only helped others but also helped her reclaim her sense of self.

FMP Week 2
One of my friends has agreed to make me a song that i can use for my project!! so I think ill end up making sort of an AMV, with most of the audio coming from just that song.
Research into Idol culture
Notes on Idol Culture
1980's were the golden age of Idols in Japan.
Idol Characteristics:
Focus on image, attractiveness, and personality.
Primarily young girls (ages 16-18+).
Usually trained in singing, acting, dancing, and modelling.
Have a loyal customer base with a parasocial relationship.
Role Models:
Personal lives controlled by talent agencies (e.g., no smoking, drinking, or dating).
Often retire by age 25.
Costuming:
Elaborate, cute costumes for each promotion cycle.
School uniforms popularized by the Onyanko Club (debuted 1985).
Fan Culture:
Passionate male fans called "wota" (derived from "otaku").
Wota formed cheering groups (bodyguards) to support idols at events.
Perform "wotagei" (fan chants/dancing) to show appreciation.
Fan chants popularized by Mari Amachi's fans in the 1970s.
Influence of Fans:
Fans circulate under-reported news via social media due to media self-censorship.
Slang Terms:
DD: Stands for "daredemo daisuki" (no favourite member/group, generally negative connotation).
Oshimen (or oshi): Favourite member or group.
Bako oshi: Support for an idol group.
Fan-Idol Relationship:
Marketing emphasizes emotional connection.
Fans are actively involved in the idol's journey.
Some fans (usually men in their 30s-40s) seek long-term interactions without real-life complications.
Idol Interaction:
Talent agencies offer meet-and-greet events (handshake events) for fans.
Betrayal and Image:
Fans may feel "betrayed" if idols reveal personal issues or break the illusion of exclusivity.
Criticism of Idol System:
Strict rules and intense work schedules.
Little personal control for idols; likened to salarymen.
Idols often lack labour rights and receive little revenue.
Concerns about excessive work expectations and lack of mental health resources.
Young idols (even elementary school students) face exploitation.
Industry Issues:
No labour unions for idols; agencies treat idol activities like school extracurriculars.
Critics highlight the need for better mental health support and appropriate work conditions.
I think my story will delve into the bad parts of the idol industry, as well as show a fun crime fighting story.
Other Notes-
Setting
2049 LA - Blade runner
neon lights
tall city buildings/skyscrapers
dirty vibes
very crowded
very busy
lots of alleyways
Large stage for performance- lots of warm bright lights, pink/yellow/white
This is a 3D model i made to use as reference for backgrounds. it will also help with scaling.
Antagonists
gang based off poisonous flowers – Lilly of the valley, fox glove, hemlock – Cursed Garden
the idol industry as a whole/ her manager of her agency
Opening idea-
View character on the roof of a building, sirens fading in, and blue flashing lights appear, character looks over shoulder
Screen starts black sound of cheering fades in, Background moves like you’re going up (she’s going up a trapdoor in a tube) cheering gets louder, Reach the top cheering gets much louder
Walk to front of stage with microphone
Camera swaps to watching her
Takes deep breath and smiles Music starts
swap to other POV and she jumps off the roof spider man style into the flashing lights, uses stick to slide down wall closer to floor
swap POV to stage, dancing and singing, flip camera to crowd who are cheering and waving lights, then swap back to her and she winks at crowd
Scene ideas-
Runs past a billboard showing a news story of her preforming and speculating on her real identity.
Manager yelling at maya in his office
Alien creature friend :)

FMP Week 1
We are of course starting with pre production!
I started working a little it earlier this trimester. I started by drafting a character. My inspirations for this project are Perfect Blue, Hatsune Miku, Blade runner 2049, Cyberpunk, Arcane and Oshi No Ko.
I started with some quick drawings of outfits/silhouettes, then I decided what one i liked most. then made some different hair options and decided between them too.
I ended up with two different designs. one for a vigilante character and one for an idol character.
For my story i've decided to look into idol culture in Asia, and delve into the history.
My character will be an idol pop star, but also have a secret double life as a vigilante. Her weapon of choice is a mic stand, because it will be easy access to her, and it links her two personas together.
