I hope you don’t mind me sharing my two cents on this, OP.
While certainly we shouldn’t blame Ryuunosuke on this, I also believe we are putting a lot of blame on Kazuma sometimes:
The last two chapters of the game for me felt more like “My best friend is going through possibly one of the worst moments of his life and is acting irrationally (thus, not like his usual collected, logical, justice-seeking self)” than “He is not the man I thought I knew”
Kazuma does seem to be prone to hide his emotions and troubles from people, which looks to be tied to his never-ending fight for self improvement (”If I can’t do this on my own, then I am weak and unworthy”), but I haven’t seen him hide the ugly parts about his unaltered (not emotionally overwhelmed) personality: Even though it never reaches the level of 2-4 and 2-5, he still shows his anger, his resentment, still makes his hostile remarks.
And while he doesn’t voice certain concerns or ask for help often, he seems to do it in roundabout ways sometimes, his “I have a request for you”s. He trusted Ryuunosuke fully to see him at his worst and knew he would save him from his rage. He still should have been completely transparent to Ryuunosuke when he requested he accompany him to Britain, for sure. And we have no way of knowing whether he would eventually tell him everything or he would want him to uncover the truth by himself, knowing he trusts him, and spare him the risk of being framed as an accomplice. Not a good thing, to be fair, but it mirrors how he previously hid from Susato that he brought Ryuunosuke along as a stowaway.
On Jigoku, he was most likely more of an obstacle than he was an aid to Kazuma. If the exchange wasn’t a front for murder and was legitimate as originally thought, he wouldn’t have to go through that in the first place. Through the dangers that may come if he got involved in something of that scale, if he betrayed Jigoku (as it seems to have been his plan) on such a plot.
Ryuunosuke is still shown to know about Kazuma in his core, even though he was for sure affected by his behaviour and has never seen him in such a state. During the trial he points out his distaste for telling lies, even if it means not telling the full truth. As well as how heated he tends to be. Among other things.
In the end, I believe Kazuma is not as awful as he is believed to be, he is a character that has a lot of positive qualities to him, but is in the end proven to be flawed. As are all human beings. That is what I think Ryuunosuke thought, that the god built from his best memories of Kazuma to keep him going through desperate times, the one year with him dead and everything that happened in it, crumbled only to show the human that was underneath, his flawed but loyal best friend.
This is still just my opinion, though, you’re free to believe what you think is best and true.
I’ve seen a lot of people point out that Ryunosuke’s feelings of betrayal towards Kazuma in 2-4 & 2-5 are partially due to his idealization of him, and while I do agree with that assessment and think Ryunosuke’s view of Kazuma was unhealthy, I think more of the blame still needs to be placed on Kazuma himself for the way Ryunosuke perceived him than on Ryu.
Kazuma actively tried to hide every flaw and weakness about himself from the people he loved. He didn’t do it to manipulate or hurt them, but it’s still what he did at the end of the day. He could have gone to Mikatoba to discuss that letter instead of letting those feelings fester within him (and only him) for 10 years, he could have told him why he wanted to go to England so badly, he could have asked him for help, but Kazuma didn’t want to burden anyone.
Moreover I think Kazuma just has a problem with asking for help, in general; that it’s too vulnerable for him. Kazuma agreed to be a part of an assassin program because Jigoku came to him for help and therefore Kazuma wouldn’t have to seek it out.
Does this mean Ryunosuke should have put Kazuma on a pedestal? No, but I think it needs to be acknowledged that Ryunosuke feeling like Kazuma lied to him…isn’t wrong and his reaction is way closer to “you’ve hidden this side of yourself from me since the very beginning of our relationship and I literally don’t know if I know as well as I thought I did so, I don’t know if I can trust you,” and further away from “I am shocked and offended that your emotions get the better of you sometimes.”
