For example, take Ayumi from Detco. I've heard many people say that she and the detective boys are annoying. Like, sure, your opinion. But then I hear them dare utter the words "Ugh, I hate how they're so cringe and childish"

Hakuba has somehow become the problem child for most anime adaptation of the Magic Kaito/Detective Conan universe and lemme tell you why.

Hakuba was introduced to the world before Shinichi but introduced to the screen far later. Since he was known in MK as the great detective, after MK merged with DC, this becomes a point of conflict and Gosho scrambled to buff Shinichi to make sure he's still Detective Boy #1. (We can't let the audience love another HS detective more than our protagonist can we?) Which is why most of Hakuba's appearances in DC anime takes their sweet time to BOLD underline the fact that Hakuba is just an amateur PI whose deductive reasoning loses to Heiji who loses to Shinichi. And so for decades everyone considers Hakuba the punching bag of the hs detective troupe 🙄

Come Magic Kaito Specials, finally some time to breathe. And although the stories had to be condensed, Hakuba is given a lot of great moments - as faithful as they could to the manga. MY PROBLEM with the special is that they gave Hakuba an ulterior motivation: use Kaito Kid to catch Spider. This does not make any sense, it also doesn't seem in-character. Additionally, it muddles up the dynamic between Kaito and Hakuba.

I LOVE the idea that Hakuba left his cushy English boarding school and came to Japan just to see what this guy's up to. And that Kaito welcomes the challenge. Having Hakuba attempt to use Kaito just seems underhanded and cruel instead of your typical frenemy shit.

Bro Kaito even says about Hakuba (& Conan but he's less important in this context): "[They're] like lovers I don't wanna meet" 👀👀👀

It doesn't ruin the show for me but still ... not perfect

And then Magic Kaito 1412 - the most close-to-source material adaptation of MK we have so far. I like the show I think it's enjoyable, but once again ... Hakuba

One thing about MK 1412 is that they kinda mixed the order of stories around. Knowing that Hakuba is somewhat popular, he was introduced VEEEERY early on ... and then had to take a long vacation in Europe for the next 14 episodes 🥹 Plus I think they neglected to include my favorite Hakuba scene my poor sleepy boyos

(Also where is his full-on Sherlock Holmes cosplay?? Give him back the stupid hat 😭 don't you see he's just a lil nerd at heart? He wears his BEST outfit whenever he's out to catch Kaito 🥺)

And that is why I cannot fucking WAIT for Kaito Kid and the Azure Throne to be animated I need it NOOOOOOOW 😭 this is Gosho and the anime's chance at redemption after treating Hakuba like garbage all these years 😭
