While ao3 is down I think it would be a great time to discuss the similarities between the Epic of Gilgamesh and BBC Merlin. Gilgamesh a god, a king who doesn’t know how to treat his servants with respect, and who feels alone in a world where he has no equal. Sounds quite a bit similar to Arthur Pendragon, if you ask me. A prince born out of magic, mistreating his servants and thinking he’s on top of the world.

Then comes a random dude, he’s wild he’s so out of place, and has no idea of hierarchy or just simply doesn’t care. The Gods literally made Enkidu to be Gilgamesh’s other half. To challenge him, to be his companion. To teach him to be better. Meanwhile Merlin is a magical being, he exists to fulfill a prophecy (echoing the prophetic dream Gilgamesh’s mother had) in which he is to protect Arthur and help him become the Once and Future King. During the story, they both betray themselves in favour of their other halves. Enkidu regrets his humanity while dying and Merlin stays silent and watches his kind be slaughtered.

Both Gilgamesh and Enkidu’s and Merlin and Arthur’s first interaction is picking a fight and almost killing each other. Only to realise later on that they complete each other.

And on top of everything, the same forces that made them, that guided them to each other to fulfill their destinies, is the one that tears them apart in the end. Gilgamesh and Merlin left alone, both only half of a person, to wander around and find meaning again when their whole world has been taken from them. The major difference is that Merlin is immortal, while Gilgamesh failed to attain immortality.

To my knowledge, this topic hasn’t been discussed before, but feel free to correct me if I’m wrong! I would also love to hear your takes on this!!
