I wish people would stop using "empathy" to mean "common decency" and "caring about others."

Empathy is:

The ability to feel others' emotions with them, either inherently (affective empathy) or by intentionally thinking about how you would feel in their situation (cognitive empathy)

Empathy is not:

Common decency (that's common decency)

Caring about others (that's compassion)

A prerequisite for being a good person

Stop putting empathy on a pedestal and demonizing people who lack empathy.

I've slowly been losing the ability to tolerate drusilla as a villain or whatever in spuffy fics. she cannot at all be a major player in the fic or I just get sad. like... this isn't gonna turn into spuffsilla? ur just... making her an antagonistic? an obstacle to overcome? don't you know she's what buffy could've become so easily if angelus had simply had his way with her for long enough? you don't feel any sympathy for buffy's mirror opposite, or you don't wish to see any given to her? you don't think spike's two girls, who have their own entirely separate and incredibly strange connection, could fall in love if only given the time and the opportunity?
