What’d you think of the Joker War ending with Batman and Joker?

I personally loved it but I know there’s so much to think about in relation to it and what it all means for them

Honestly, when I think about how the "Joker War" storyline ended, I have two thoughts:

Thought 1: Ultimately, it didn't mean anything for Batman and Joker, because per usual, subsequent writers for them were not too concerned about picking up the threads and there seems to be minimal editorial encouragement to do so.

For Bruce, we have him altering the rules for him and Joker, where Joker's life is not prioritized and the clown can now be left to save himself. But we also have Bruce conceding that Joker was right that Batman's current tactics were not what the city needs, so he moves out the manor to live within city limits with his diminished funds.

But following all that in practice doesn't amount to much. Bruce losing his fortune was a joke, because his capabilities were no different than usual, and then at the end of Zdarsky's run, he got all the money back and moved into a different mansion. Were Bruce's tactics all that different? I don't know, his tactics are whatever the current writer says they are. His relationship with Joker? It was super weird that he didn't go after either Joker in The Man Who Stopped Laughing because that doesn't follow from him willing to let Joker die if the circumstances arise. Joker was killing people! And when they reconnected in Zdarsky's Batman nothing seemed all that different. And anyway now in "Hush 2" Bruce is saving Joker from imminent death again to much consternation. lmao

As for Joker, it's interesting that the end of "Joker War" and his appearance in Joker (2021) seems to follow a through-line starting from Snyder's Batman. Joker expresses frustration that he means less to Batman than Batman means to him (ie, Batman keeping his sidekicks around, proposing to Catwoman), and he fails to punish Bruce for it to his satisfaction. Then Bruce changes the game by indicating he may one day let Joker die after all, and Joker shows signs of depression in Joker (2021) that manifest in TMWSL. But… nothing happens. TMWSL has some great moments, but it ends telling us that sad clown Joker wasn't even the real one. When Joker shows back up in Zdarsky's Batman, we get a retcon that he never really cared about Bruce at all and he's actually been trying to resurface Zur-En-Arrh this whole time, even back in Snyder's run. I've said this before, but it drives me bananas that Zdarsky's story could have had Joker seeking out Zur as a result of his disillusionment with Bruce. But instead we get the retcon and three Jokers stupidity that I guess somebody out there was asking for but they're not people I talk to.

So yeah, I saw the potential for the batjokes divorce to lead… I dunno, somewhere, buuuuuut it didn't.

Thought 2: I, however, have been contemplating a fic that follows Joker's post-War depression for, oh… 3 years. 😂

The idea started percolating when I finished the "Fear State" storyline. Miracle Molly and the Unsanity Collective eliminating their memories in order to move on from the past and become their more actualized selves seemed awfully reminiscent of someone else! And Joker didn't even lose his memories once, from the vat. It happened again at the end of Snyder's run in #48, and we saw a Joker who seemed to have found relief from his fated burden-- until Batman's return compelled him to revert. Sure seems like a depressed Joker could be tempted to escape his self yet again, for good this time.

And when Bruce inevitably discovers this mindwipe, of course he'll be absolutely thrilled, not paranoid and obsessive and resentful about it at all! All will be well!

I do think while fic planning that I should give DC writers more slack, since while I'm going to follow from Joker (2021), there are definitely canon elements I'm going to ignore… but then again I don't get paid to write the canon!

Anyway, this idea is my next focus when I'm done the mpreg fic. But at that rate, it might be another three years before any of the mindwipe fic comes to light. 💀
