PSA to Regency fic writers: please try to get the titles right. Especially the ones for canon characters.
Sir William Lucas should be called “Sir William,” not “Sir Lucas.” His wife is “Lady Lucas.” “Sir” always goes with the first name and never the last name. This goes for both knights and baronets. (Also, baronets are not considered nobility but gentry.) The wife of a “Sir Firstname” is “Lady Lastname” because her title comes from her husband.
Lord and Lady titles:
Firstname Lastname, the Earl of Fancyplace, would be referred to as Lord Fancyplace. He might be referred to informally as just Fancyplace.
Lord Fancyplace’s wife would be Firstname Lastname, the Countess of Fancyplace, called Lady Fancyplace.
The children of Lord and Lady Fancyplace would have what are called “courtesy titles.” The heir to the peerage (the eldest son) usually has a courtesy title one rank below his father’s title. So Lord Fancyplace’s heir might be Firstname Lastname, Viscount Otherplace, called Lord Otherplace (with his wife Lady Otherplace.)
Younger sons would be “The Honorable Firstname Lastname” for formal address.
Daughters would be “Lady Firstname” and would stay Lady Firstname even after marriage unless their husband has a higher ranking title to take precedence. Title comes from the father- Lady Firstname. Title comes from the husband- Lady Lastname.
So in Pride and Prejudice, the former Earl had (at least) three children. His son became the current Earl. His daughters (Lady Anne Fitzwilliam and Lady Catherine Fitzwilliam) became Lady Anne Darcy and Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Since Sir Lewis de Bourgh was not of a higher rank, Catherine stayed Lady Catherine, instead of being Lady de Bourgh. Colonel Fitzwilliam, being a second son, is technically “The Honorable Colonel Firstname Fitzwilliam” (I think-I’d need to look up the title order) but that would mainly be used in correspondence or if he was being like formally announced.
(Colonel Fitzwilliam also has no canonical first name. “Richard” is popular fanon but it is indeed fanon.)
But PLEASE stop with the “Sir Lucas” and “Sir Elliot”s, it makes me twitch every time I see it.
