Bonjour, mes enfants. My name is François Bonnefoy, and I am the anthropomorphic personification of the country of France. ((Independent Hetalia roleplay blog. Les Mis!verse as main. Mun and muse above age of consent. I own nothing!))

Les Miserables as a text is far from being above reproach. Hugo wrote a book about the poor and the miseries that they faced without actually keeping a single one of his characters poor throughout the entirety of the novel and used a group of wealthy young men as spokespeople for the poor and the downtrodden; he only presented Valjean as sympathetic and not inherently evil when he was “saved” by a rich man who was poor by choice rather than by circumstance and who was self-righteous and preached what he didn’t and couldn’t know; he depicted women in abusive situations, such as young Cosette and Fantine and Eponine, as ugly or only retaining a shadow of their former beauty due to their misfortunes, thus equating ugliness with survival; the only characters of his which he hints as possibly being POC in text (the Thenardiers, Javert, and members of Patron-Minette) are shown as fulfilling any number of stereotypes from being greedy and abusive (the Thenardiers), hating their heritage and only succeeding when trying to separate themselves from it (Javert), murderous and violent (Patron-Minette). And yet in true SJ form, the majority of the fandom seems to be only concerned with whether or not white gay men are being properly represented.

Briefly? Sure, I’ll do the best I can.
Alright, so, after the French Revolution (which happened 1789-99) nothing really changed and Charles X was named king. He was an awful king and people got rid of him during the July Revolution (1830). Then Louis-Philippe I was named king and he really wasn’t a bad guy. People did not like him though because he was not voted into power (now, some people could vote, but most could not because the voter registration was ridiculously high). And, to add insult to injury, during the spring of ‘32, cholera (a disease that affects the smaller intestine) ran rampant in poor neighborhood especially (this is what killed General Lamarque). This is where the student-led societies came in.
FAST FORWARD TO JUNE 5, 1832: Thousands and thousands of students and workers attended Lamarque’s funeral. At 10am, the casket started to move and, a few hours later, the students cut off the carriages, cut the horses loose and dragged them themselves. Sometime between 5 and 6 in the evening the first shots were fired by an unknown man (ps, the military was under strict order to avoid deadly force). Around this time, the students, with the use of trees, furniture, etc, etc constructed the barricades in narrow streets (this is one of those streets, btw). They did this really fucking quickly.
Problem was, very few people were willing to fight and others were unprepared for battle so really had no chance. So, in the morning the next day, when the canons were set up, most of the rebels were already captured. By the evening of the 6th, the army charged a café where the remaining rebels were.
In the end, the rebellion was over in less than 24 hours and over 800 were wounded or dead. What made it worse is that the students had no support of the people (before or after the event) and they were portrayed as an extremist minority.
All in all, the June Rebellion was a completely failure.
…whoops. that wasn’t brief. sorry!

"Perhaps that is why you see him as such. You cannot believe his dreams could be realized; how could you believe he himself is real?" François finished his glass. "Nevertheless, I assure you he is flesh and bone, as are you."

"He's a statue made of marble, shines brighter than the Sun and yet you call him a man." Laughing bitterly, he took another gulp from his bottle, face remaining impassive; surprisingly so, considering the way he spoke. "I am no where near equal to Enjolras, nor are we brothers. And I do not wholly believe in this cause, either, I'm sorry to say."

He glanced sideways at Grantaire, his smile thinning slightly. "Enjolras is a mortal, just like us. You needn't elevate him to the point of worship, nor myself by association. Equality, liberty, and fraternity, hein? There is no room for false idols in a republic."

“…Do I know you?” The cynic raised an eyebrow, peering at the man over his bottle - that he’d barely pulled an inch from his lips, just to speak, before tipping it back to his mouth and taking another large sip.
