hi you don’t need to reply to this if you don’t want to, i just saw your tags on my dennis post & wanted to make something clear ! i didn’t at all mean that just because something is an ed “stereotype” that it can’t happen (which you pointed out in reference to throwing up food) and i’m super sorry if it came across that way😓 it wasn’t my intent at all, and i absolutely agree with you on that. i was a bit wary myself when i used that wording because i didn’t want to come across as invalidating of anyone’s very real experience, and i really really apologise if it felt derogatory at all towards you or your writing because that’s the last thing i want. you were very nice and clear with your reasoning so thanks for that, and your perspective on the whole thing :-)

I actually am going to answer this bc I really don’t want you to be afraid of like, sharing a point of view that might be different from others!! please don’t apologize for your post, I found it really interesting and it made me think more deeply about why I wrote him the way I did and why I stand by that representation of an ed for Dennis. (gonna put the rest under the cut bc long text and all)

I don’t think you meant that either, I was more just jumping off of what you said to make my point. The cool part about all these characters imo is that there’s a bunch of shit we have been handed by rcg but then there’s this whole under layer and world that exists where we go to try and make sense of the things we weren’t given. and it makes for such a variety of backstories and headcanons. which you can say for any fandom but I’m just speaking with my sunny hat on atm.

anyway, I like reading the things you have to say and even if we don’t always agree on every detail, it’s still worth it to have these talks. ty for starting the convo!

putting these tags here because i think they r very interesting + i do agree ! there is definitely overlap between his ed and his obsession with how others perceive him (because there is very clear evidence of that whenever he’s motivated to fast). i think i misworded the end of my post a little because i didn’t really know how to articulate my thoughts, but i def didn’t mean that there’s no relationship between them. i just think that maybe people misinterpret that in the specifics of how they portray his eating issues? i can see there being aspects of his ed that are pretty "standard" like you said, but really the thing i wanted to say in my post was that some (though not all) of those “standard” disordered eating habits often conflict with dennis’ other onscreen habits and yet people kind of erase the more complex aspects of his ed in favour of broader things that can be applied more generally.

of course it's all up to interpretation (and this is just my take) but i feel like a lot of people mischaracterise dennis' eating disorder because of how it overlaps with other aspects of his personality. i've very often seen him portrayed as a crazy health nut or someone who throws up everything he eats but like... mac is the one who obsesses over empty calories + the one time dennis tried to throw up food, he physically couldn't do it. he does say things about skipping meals/etc but i think some people take that, alongside his overall vanity, and kind of just shove him into a box where his ed is grounded more in stereotypes around diet culture in general than in canon.
