Toxic Black Mold - Finding The Hidden Enemy In Your Home
There are several things that can go wrong unexpectedly in a bathroom or a kitchen that cause it to be flooded with water. You usually never saw it coming or you would surely have taken more precaution to prevent it. When it happens, there is nothing left to be done except to clean it up. If you are lucky, you will have caught the flood soon after it started, if you are not so lucky and it has been getting flooded for a while, you might not even be able to do all the clean up alone. There are literally hundreds thousands of different types of mold - of which nearly 1000 can be found in homes throughout North America - many of which are fairly innocuous. The majority of molds create known allergens that can create minor to sever health issues. Still others can pose a more significant health risk through their production of toxins. When your kitchen, bathroom or any part of your house is flooded, it's important to take notes and lots of pictures in regards to the damage. Don't let the water sit, make sure you soak it up and promote drying as soon as possible. Make sure to clean your home by dusting and cleaning for not allowing Molds to settle in the surface. A dirt floor should be covered with plastic as a vapour barrier to prevent moisture. Allow the standing water to dry by fans before covering the floors. Once you are aware of the dangers that mold can bring into your life, you will occasionally check your home for potential growth of mold most especially if you have just experience water damage. There are even brown and black molds that grow in our home even in the fridge where we have left the leftovers for too long of a time. There are times that some Mold Orange County homeowners will just wipe it using rag. However, that does not really address the issue as there are times that it would still grow back. It may sometimes grow in the window seams where you cannot easily access it by yourself. 3) Presence of molds - The very first thing you need to check if you are inspecting molds is the northwest corner of the house. The reason for that is because typically it is the coldest part of the house. That is the area where molds usually are present. If you see any discoloration and it is like green, yellow or brown and black then make sure that a sample is taken and have those inspected for molds. Make sure that the house inspection company you hire include mold inspection. Otherwise, you may need a house inspector that specializes specifically for molds. Molds grow very easily anywhere if it came in contact with moisture. It can even led to serious problem making you fall ill, it is not properly checked. So it is very necessary for testing home air quality as it essential to breath pure air to be healthy. Once the source of moisture has been removed, dry the area thoroughly. If the surface the mold has grown on is made of porous material or absorbent fibers then the material will have to be replaced all together. There simply isn't any way to efficiently remove all mold from things like carpet, carpet padding, ceiling tiles and the like. However, mold can be scrubbed off of porcelain, laminate and other smooth surfaces with a diluted detergent.

Mold Inspection Services Can Help To Protect Your Home
It is important that you need to always react quickly to any form of water intrusion in your home. If you have a flood in a bathroom, clean it up immediately. One area that most people neglect during a flood of a bathroom is under the bathroom cabinet. The bathroom cabinet is the perfect place for mold to grow after a flood. When you are cleaning up the flood, make sure to ventilate under the cabinet even if you have to drill a hole in the baseboard. It is cheaper to replace the wood facing on the bottom of the cabinet than do remediation later. There are hundreds of mold types which can cause sickness in people who live in or near a contaminated residence. Asthma and skin irritations are only a couple of indications of prolonged contact to mold. Most people employ a lot of their day at their home and it is of the utmost importance that those homes with a mold problem rectify it immediately. The lead testing San Francisco uses advanced method to check the quality of air. The most dangerous step to check a mold problem is to exactly find out the type of mold and rectify the moisture that helps them to grow and multiply. The most important method to prevent mold is to check out all the water related issue and make the areas dry within 24-48 hour. The surface sampling gives the exact results about the inspected atmosphere. Air testing is highly inaccurate. All it can do is to tell you what was in the air at that location at that moment in time. Results can vary widely over time and method used. Airborne fungal spore concentrations vary greatly over the course of hours, days, weeks, and seasons. 3) Presence of molds - The very first thing you need to check if you are inspecting molds is the northwest corner of the house. google for that is because typically it is the coldest part of the house. Execute the Process - Once you are done laying out your plan, implement your black mold treatment based on it. Make sure that you are accurately following your pre-determined steps but be open to possible mistakes that must be corrected. Wear protective gear while executing the process to keep yourself away from any risks. Channel 4s San Diego Insider recently did a story on mold causing a problem in two local schools. Both Sherman Elementary and Kennedy Elementary schools were shut down and demolished due to mold problems.

Home Improvements聽 The Fun Stuff
Whether you need heat in winter or air conditioning in summer, you run the risk of throwing away money on utilities. You need not do this by making painless home improvements. Home Improvements Get Your Envelope In Order Your house is an enclosed structure designed to keep rain, cold, heat, wind, snow and so on out. In contrast, all of those things want in. If you are not careful, Mother Nature will rob you blind. Yes, I am talking about the thermal envelope of your home. The thermal envelope refers to the protective pocket around your living space. Much like wearing gloves in the snow, you want the envelope to provide a complete insulation barrier between you and the elements. If there are gaps or weak areas, your hard earned money is flowing out of them. Upgrading or maintaining your envelope can save you a bundle. Insulation can be a killer when it comes to your envelope. Most developers build homes to the minimum requirements because they are focused on profits. Insulation is noted by R values, a method of determining how resistant the insulation is to transferring heat. If you check the walls of your house, an R-11 value will most likely be present. This is bad. R-11 is the minimum required. Upgrade to R-20 or R-30 in the walls and R-70 in the ceiling and floor areas. The temperatures in the house will become more consistent because the heat transfer will stop. This means the house stays warmer for longer in the winter and cooler for longer in the summer. The change will be dramatic. Windows can be a killer, accounting for as much as 25 percent of your energy loss. The answer is relatively simple. Install Energy Star approved windows and get those frames into shape. Doors are another area that can kill you. The issue is not so much the door itself, but the framing around it. Make sure your doors are flush to the frames. Installing small seal pads along the inside of the doorstops can make a major difference because they cut off air flow. Of course, the downside is the door doesn't make much noise when you slam it in anger, but you will just have to tough it out. Upgrading your envelope can make a major difference in your utility bill. If you can save $100 a month, you will save $1,200 a year. If you live in the home for 10 years, that is an easy $12,000.

Water Damage Mold
Water damage is caused when the wall coverings, ceilings, and tiles of any house or building are likely to be damaged because of excessive moisture due to natural calamities like floods or hurricanes or water leakage through the pipes. Black mold is a type of fungus which grows in the presence of water and is hence known as water damage mold. During spring, you must have seen a black layer on the walls of your bathrooms or weed-like growth on the ceiling. In such a situation, a full-fledged clean-up becomes necessary to avoid any health issues and risks. Mold growth needs to be controlled early, or it could lead to serious health issues like respiratory problems, severe headaches, cough, and even poisoning. However, there isn't any significant proof regarding mold toxicity. There are a few mold species that are absolutely nontoxic. Causes and Identification The root cause of black mold in a bathroom is a high moisture level or humidity. So, you would have to reduce it by either installing an exhaust fan or a dehumidifier. However, if the growth is on other walls, then checking for a probable water leakage from the pipes should be the next step. This calls for professional guidance that would include the use of mold removal products to eradicate further spread of the fungus. In case of leakage, ensure that you fix it as early as you can. Molds can grow well in the cracks of walls and damage them, so sealing them becomes mandatory in such a situation. Home Remedies There are a few home remedies for mold removal which could help in case the spread is less. They can aid to oppose fungal growth until you get professional help. All you need to do is prepare a spray of white vinegar and water, or baking soda and water, and apply to the affected parts. Wait for a few hours for the fungus to get killed. You should make it a point to protect yourself with gloves and a face mask as you wouldn't know whether the mold is toxic or not. Another mold removal method is to use chlorine bleach mixed in appropriate amounts of water. You need to scrub the affected parts with the prepared mixture, wait for a few hours and then clean it. An easier remedy is to use soap water. Scrub it thoroughly on the mold growth and wash away after some time. Tea tree oil can also be used. The steps would be to mix water with the oil, dab on a sponge, and rub on the mold. Lastly, clean your bathrooms and walls frequently to prevent mold breakouts. These were some ways of mold removal. Mold is harmful to human beings and pets alike and its dangers can't be overlooked. It is thus important to take the necessary action as soon as fungal growth is noticed. Mold allergies could be serious and in a few situations turn to be fatal.

Consequences of Compulsive Hoarding Exceed Unsightly Junk Piles
Compulsive hoarding is a behavior disorder characterized by the obsessive need to collect and accumulate large quantities of items. The items are often worthless and hold no useful purpose for the owner. A dangerously cluttered home filled with junk and boxes piled from floor to ceiling is only the beginning of a list of consequences that are a direct result of hoarding. To fully comprehend the magnitude of hoarding behavior, it helps to first understand the profile of a hoarder. The Profile of a Compulsive Hoarder Anyone can be a hoarder, regardless of financial status, level of education, gender or social class. Age doesn't seem to be a factor; signs of hoarding can be present in school-age children, teenagers and adults. Hoarders often see themselves as collectors, even though items may be ruined by dust, careless handling and neglect. The worst offenders have no functioning kitchen or bathroom, and no place to sleep because of the extreme clutter. There are different ways to hoard: Organized hoarders store items piled high in bags, boxes or bins. There may be a small path to walk, but the hoard takes up much of the living space in the home.Disorganized hoarders have things strewn everywhere. There's no pattern to their collection. Home occupants can't move without walking on or crawling over piles and piles of stuff.Trash hoarders not only collect useless "stuff", but they also hang on to things like used diapers, garbage and rotting food in the refrigerator. They are oblivious to the stench and the sight of roaches.Animal hoarders are people who collect animals with the intent of giving them a good home. Eventually, there are so many creatures that the job of caring for them has become overwhelming, not to mention expensive. The pets take over and the house reeks of animal droppings. The Consequences of Hoarding Living among piles and piles of trash and junk affects mood and lifestyle. It's stressful, depressing and shameful. Most hoarders and their family members are secretive unwilling to allow anyone into the home, including relatives, friends and repairmen. The house begins to fall apart from neglect. Neighbors begin to complain about bad odors and an increasing problem with mosquitoes, flies, mice and other intruders. Not all hoarders recognize the dangers of hoarding. Common consequences of hoarding that are obvious to outsiders: Hoarders can lose their children. An unsafe, unhealthy hoarding environment is grounds for child neglect.Children of hoarders don't enjoy a social life with friends visiting. The emotional and psychological impact of hoarding on children and teens can last a lifetime.A house filled with papers, boxes and clutter is a firetrap. Medical emergency teams can't access victims in need of help. Apartment hoarders are a threat to their neighbors' safety.Mold and mildew ruin furniture and clothing, and can destroy walls. Mold spores even hidden mold behind the walls can lead to asthma and other serious respiratory conditions.Dust, dust mites and accumulating dirt can cause respiratory illness and aggravate asthma. Pet dander including that of birds and fur shed from animals also contributes to bronchial infection and other respiratory illnesses. Infants, small children, elderly persons and occupants with compromised immune systems are most at risk.Extreme filth can put anyone at risk for dangerous infections, particularly if the victim has a cut or open sore that could quickly become infected.Animal Hoarding Has Serious Consequences You don't have to be an animal hoarder to have your house destroyed by unwanted creatures. Rodents, wood ants and termites can eventually destroy a home structure by eating through the walls. You can also catch nasty diseases from vermin that could result in permanent damage to health or, at the very least, be very costly to treat. Be aware of: Animal droppings, including dried airborne toxins, can cause a host of nasty diseases and illnesses from parasites passed from pets (dogs and cats) to humans. MedicineNet.com, in the article "Diseases from Animals: A Primer", offers a list of both rare and common ailments that include, but are not limited to, toxoplasmosis (cats), tapeworms (from infected fleas) and roundworms.Ringworm isn't a worm, but is a fungus that passes from infected animals to humans and appears on the skin as a ring-shaped rash. Many parasitic and fungal infections spread by animals (pets and vermin) are contagious.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the article "Diseases Directly Transmitted by Rodents", house mice can transmit a virus called Lymphocytic Chorio-meningitis (LCM) to humans. Direct contact with mouse urine or feces, or simply breathing in dust particles contaminated with dried mouse excrement are the two most common ways of becoming infected with LCM.Flies and roaches are common insects that spread bacteria and germs in a home. Bedbugs may or may not carry diseases harmful to humans, but the itching causes scratching. Wounds can easily get infected in a filthy environment. Mosquitoes can breed indoors in standing water, they carry diseases, and scratching bites can put victims at risk for infection.Major Consequences of Hoarding Can Ruin a Life A home is a huge investment to lose to a massive pile of junk. Hoarders have been known to lose entire life savings as a result of out-of-control spending and collecting. What else does a hoarder risk? Fines and jail time. The authorities will get involved when home and property aren't cleaned within a set time limit.Charges of animal cruelty. Pets not properly cared for and suffering from neglect and/or illness can be forcibly removed from the home. Cooperate with authorities or end up paying hefty fines. Those who don't comply can also end up in jail.Eviction. An apartment or home rental tenant who is evicted for hoarding can expect trouble when qualifying for a new place to live. Landlords often check an applicant's past rental history. Why Hoarders Hoard The reason a person begins to hoard isn't always obvious. The behavior could possibly stem from a family tragedy, personal crisis or other trauma. There may be some genetic factor that contributes to hoarding behavior. A child who lives with a parent who hoards doesn't necessarily become a hoarder, too. Genetics may very well be involved. As one who grew up with a mother and brother who were hoarders, and now has a son who hoards, I can see where the behavior disorder has passed from one generation to the next. Hoarding has no specific cure, but counseling or other professional intervention (a professional organizer, for example) can usually help. Compulsive hoarding has lasting and devastating consequences for everyone who lives in the home. If you or someone you know has a hoarding problem, address the problem immediately. Get help now before it's too late to prevent costly and irreparable damage. How To Maintain Siding On Your Home
If you have siding on your home, it is important to maintain it in order to keep it in shape and like new. Regular maintenance of your home's siding is simple, yet necessary. Like any other exterior home materials (such as brick, stucco, and stone), neglecting maintenance can result in long-term damage. Here are some tips for maintaining your home's siding. Vinyl Siding Vinyl siding requires very little maintenance. Unlike most materials, vinyl does not need to be repainted through the years. You should, however, clean your vinyl siding at least once every year. This can be done simply by hosing the siding down with the optional use of soap. If you choose to go the extra mile and use soap, lather the soap in a bucket of water and apply it on the siding with a nylon scrubber or brush before hosing it off. Common issues that arise with vinyl siding are buckling or bowing (which is caused by improper nailing during installation), becoming brittle in temperatures below freezing, loose planks, and separated joints. Most of these can be avoided with proper installation, which is why it is crucial to have your siding installed by credible professionals whom you trust. Wood Siding If you have wood siding on your home, it is important to thoroughly inspect it annually. Cut any vines or other plants that may be growing into or close to the siding, as these can cause serious damage if they are not kept under control. Check for rotting, especially behind things such as window flower boxes. If you find any rotted wood, replace it as soon as possible before it spreads and worsens. Dirt, moss, and mold can also damage your siding and should be washed off. Wood siding should also be repainted if the paint is chipping. It is common for wood siding to require regular repainting in order to keep the appearance consistently fresh. You also should be aware if there are any insects such as termites that are damaging your siding. Metal Siding Metal siding is known for its durability through the years. Unlike wood siding, metal siding does not need to be repainted regularly. It can fade over time, but the paint will not chip or crack. Any caulking that is used around the windows and the corners of the house will need to be replaced when it eventually begins to separate. This is because metal siding expands in the heat, which is why it is common to hear popping and banging noises on a hot day. As with vinyl siding, metal siding should be cleaned annually. Cleaning is equally simple, requiring only water and soap. Metal siding may oxidize over time. It also may become dented in some areas after years of withstanding the elements. Any dented or damaged metal can be replaced, if desired, but dents usually will not affect metal siding's efficiency. Before you choose what type of siding to use when you are building a home or exterior remodeling in Woodbury, MN, be sure that you will be able to maintain it through the years. If you have any questions, consult a trusted professional about your siding on your home. Any issues can be repaired or questions can be answered with the help of a credible professional. How to Remove Mold from Windows and Walls
Lets be honest, nobody wants mold and mildew in their home. In fact, mold can be an embarrassing problem thats hard to control once it starts. It pops up unexpectedly and spreads quickly, sometimes without you even knowing it. Getting rid of mold can be challenging especially if youve never done it before or if you dont have the proper knowledge or cleaning solutions. The most common places that youll find mold growth are around windows (window frames and sills) and on walls. This is because mold feeds off of cellulose-rich materials such as wood and drywall. Furthermore, windows are prone to leaks, so once this happens, mold growth is inevitable if the area is not dried immediately and thoroughly. Here are several tips and ideas that will help you remove the outbreak and make your home a cleaner and healthier place to live. The most important thing to remember when removing mold is to wear protective clothing and equipment. Prolonged exposure to mold and mold inhalation are known to cause health problems. Limit skin exposure and wear rubber gloves along with eye wear and even a mask to avoid coming in contact with mold and mold spores in the air. Remember, mold spores are tiny and can become airborne easily, so be particularly careful when handling mold-contaminated materials. For window mold removal, prepare a half-filled bucket with hot water and several non-abrasive rags or sponges. In the bucket of water, pour either an anti-fungal disinfectant or a mold-cleaning solution from your local drugstore until the bucket is three quarters full. Soak a rag or sponge into the bucket and then apply it with some force to the mold-infested region of the window. Afterwards, take a dry rag and dry the area of all moisture and residue. Repeat the exact same procedure for all remaining windows that you suspect to be contaminated by mold. Use a dehumidifier near the windows to eliminate all remaining moisture in the air. Finally, apply new window caulking and weather-stripping to the windows to stop unwanted moisture and air from entering through cracks and leaks. Perform the disinfectant and hot water method periodically to ensure the mold growth does not return. If you are nt comfortable using chemical disinfectants, vinegar is a proven natural mold-removing solution. Wall mold removal is very similar to window mold removal. If you catch the mold problem early on, scrubbing the affected area with hot water and disinfectants should remove the infestation. Remember to use protective gear and masks to avoid any physical contact with the mold and to avoid inhaling potential dangerous mold spores. The problem with wall mold is that it sometimes gets into the wall and becomes a much bigger problem. Cutting out the infested area will be necessary since mold grows inside the material and not just on the surface. If this is the scenario, then it is highly advisable to seek professional mold remediation because intrusive mold removal will be necessary. To avoid unnecessary high cost and damage, a professional mold removal service uses sophisticated mold removal technology that will pinpoint the exact location of the infestation, limiting the damage to your walls and home. Do it yourself mold removal should always be conducted using safety gear and equipment to avoid any health complications. Remember to throw out any used cloths, sponges and other materials to avoid spreading the outbreak to other areas of the home. However, if you think mold is growing within or behind your walls, then its highly recommended that you seek professional help to avoid both major structural damage to your home and higher costs of repair. Mold testing and removal professionals can use infrared technology to locate mold growth behind walls non-invasively, meaning that they dont need to cut gaping holes out of your walls, probe them or cause any superficial damage to your property. With mold professionals, you get answers to all of your questions within minutes, so dont wait to book your appointment.

All About Home Inspections
It is a rare thing to happen for a home to be bought without any home inspection followed through first. Even if the seller is adveryising their home "as is" this doesn't mean that you can not get it inspected. If it is a house that the bank owns then a home inspection is very important. The reason for this is because the banks do not give any disclosures, and they do not know of any problems because these will have to be found all by yourself. There are many people that have adveryisements as home inspectors. You probably will not get the best direction from your agent. An agent is scared you might find a problem that may turn you away if they give you the name of a great inspector. These are very tough times and all agents should be very loyal to all their customers. Do not go for an inspector that is just going to give you a visual inspection, looks like and has are two different things. All good inspections include; temperature check of all appliances, furnace and air cooling system checked, the hot water tank needs to be checked for the water pressure, outside lighting and wiring needs to be checked, lights and fixtures have to be checked, full inspection of the foundation for any cracks, they will need to get up onto the roof, climb through the attic, check the garage along with all of the storage spaces.. For a good inspection this is only the very beginning. When the home inspection is done you will get a report of everywhere and everything that has been followed through with, and from that you should be able to make a well informed decision. For an agent getting a bad call would be a dark part of their day, for them to avoid this they should advise all buyers first to be sure that the homes are inspected before the buyer buys.

Black Mold - Stachybotrys
Molds are very common in buildings and homes and will grow anywhere indoors where there is moisture and cellulose, the preferred food source for mold. One of the most toxic of molds, Stachybotrys is a dark colored fungus (thus the nickname "Black Mold") that thrives on water damaged wallboard, wallpaper, and insulation. This fungus has the ability to produce very toxic chemicals, called mycotoxins. Surfaces exposed to air with a relative humidity above 55% and subjected to temperature fluctuations are ideal for toxin production. It is a greenish-black mold that will grow on materials that are continually damp and moist as a result of chronic leaks or flooding. Like many other molds, Stachybotrys produces spores that, when inhaled, can cause allergy-like symptoms. Toxic mold can be found in any indoor place. It can growing and expanidng behind those beautifully painted walls in the office, nice-colored carpets, cabinets, walls, ceilings and even in a cleanly-maintained kitchen at home. Health effects from exposure to toxic molds may cause symptoms including headache, sore throat, cough, congestion, sinusitis, eye irritation, skin rash, flu-like symptoms, aggravation of asthma, cognitive effects, nosebleeds, fatigue and fever. It can also be responsible for suppression of the immune system and possible neurological effects. Additional symptoms of dizziness and double vision were found to be toxic reactions to stachybotrys as well. Extensive amounts of mold might require the services of a professional who specializes in eliminating mold from homes and buildings. Extensive infestations (as with flooding) may demand hiring a professional cleaning and/or mold remediation service that has extensive knowledge of ridding mold from homes and office buildings. By: Mr. Mold Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com Bob Richards ("Mr. Mold") has been working with mold and its effects since 1981.He owns his own mold remediation company, AAIRLLC and offersfree evaluations and complete mold remediation services through his website www.aairllc.com

Mold Testing and Remediation in New Jersey
Cases of mold are on the rise in New Jersey, calling area residents to action. Over the last twelve months, surging storms like Hurricane Sandy and polarizing shifts in climate have created suitable conditions for mold colonies to grow in homes and business all across the state. Mold grows when spores travel through the air and settle on any type of organic, porous matter (eg. wood, carpeting, paper, furniture, etc.). These spores reproduce in dark, humid and damp conditions. Colonies grow mostly in kitchens, bathrooms, attics and basements. Certain types of mold are toxic and are black or dark green to the naked eye. When approaching or handling mold, home and business owners must be very careful. Mold is self-saving, meaning when it is attacked, or touched, it will send more spores out into the air to recolonize elsewhere. This is extremely dangerous, especially since spores can settle in ventilation and HVAC systems within the home or business. It is highly recommended to have the home or office tested by an Industrial Hygienist not affiliated with any remediation or removal companies. By hiring a third-party hygienist, conflict of interest regarding testing will not be an issue for the consumer. If a mold remediation service provider advertises free testing, chances are the data collected will be used to the advantage of the company, not the consumer. The third-party hygienist will offer unbiased testing, ensuring the safety and security of the consumer. Reputable mold remediation companies only work when a third-party hygienist is involved. Experts will actually supply information on highly qualified hygienists to help with the mold removal project. A quality mold remediation expert will offer the following services during a proper mold remediation project: All technicians certified through the IICRCServices will meet/exceed IICRC S50 Guideline for Mold RemediationAll chemicals used will meet standards set by OSHAA containment area will be established, ensuring mold spores will not recolonize elsewhereHEPA ventilation and vacuums will be used to ensure proper disposal of affected materialsThird-Party Industrial Hygienist will provide mold testing before and after project, ensuring safety Mold can cause severe health issues, alive or dead. By hiring the services of a mold remediation expert, home and business owners can benefit from many advantages not afforded otherwise. New Jersey residents who fear that mold is an issue in their home or business should contact a mold removal specialist immediately.

Formaldehyde in Personal Care Products
Japan and Sweden have banned formaldehyde in cosmetics; but it is still used in a wide range of personal care products available in the U.S., because it makes a terrific preservative, kills germs, molds, and fungi, and is quite inexpensive to boot. Most cosmetics contain extremely low levels of formaldehyde, and there is no evidence at present that these levels pose any risk to health. Cosmetics with demonstrably higher levels should be used with caution (if at all), however, since formaldehyde at these levels may pose serious health risks, including mutation of healthy cells and impairment of DNA damage repair. It has long been shown to cause lung cancer in rats, and its presence causes X-rays to be more damaging to human lungs. In 2011, the National Academy of Sciences released a report confirming that formaldehyde causes cancer in humans. Obviously, individuals with allergies or sensitivities (sensitization is estimated to occur in 4-8% of the population) to formaldehyde should also avoid its use. Formaldehyde in Nail Products Formaldehyde is a small molecule that reacts readily with other substances. It cross-links with the keratin protein that forms the fingernails, making them very hard. That's why it appears in many nail hardener products, where it may be present at concentrations up to 5% (as long as it is identified on the label). Nail products containing more than 1% formaldehyde cause more problems than they solve. People with sensitivities to formaldehyde have reported serious problems stemming from use of these products, including bleeding of the nail bed, bluish discolorations, and disfiguring scarring. Non-sensitive types should probably skip them, too: Long-term use may yellow the nails and make them brittle and more prone to cracking and breaking. Instead of formaldehyde, look for nail hardeners with nitrocellulose listed in the first few ingredients: Sally Hansen Complete Care 4-in-1 Treatment works well. Consumers may notice an ingredient such as tosylamide/formaldehyde resin or toluene sulfonamide formaldehyde resin listed on their nail polishes. Most of these products contain less than 0.0015% of formaldehyde. The rest of it is locked up in the resin, which is a type of polymer. Polymers ("many parts") are larger molecules made up of one or more smaller molecules (monomers, which means "one part") linked together, kind of like they're tightly holding hands with one another. In these structures, the formaldehyde certainly can't leap out and attack you! But if you're pregnant, sensitive or allergic, or just hate the idea of any formaldehyde whatsoever, try one of the "green cosmetics" lines like Priti Polish, which are supposed to be free of all known carcinogens. Always read labels, though, just to make sure. Formaldehyde from Cosmetic Preservatives When used in conjunction with parabens, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives have broad-spectrum antibiotic action. This combination is the most commonly used cosmetic preservative system. Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives include imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, quaternium-15, 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol, and DMDM hydantoin. They should be present at the bottom or very near the bottom of the ingredient list; the amount of formaldehyde they release is minute, but enough to kill bacteria, yeast, and mold. Most people don't have problematic reactions to formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, and they are generally safe at the levels used in cosmetics. However, according to the Mayo Clinic, formaldehyde itself is one of the top ten ingredients that produce allergic contact dermatitis in susceptible individuals. According to Contact Dermatitis, these susceptible individuals do have reactions to formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. Preservative-free cosmetic lines such as Boscia are an option for those with sensitivities or allergies to preservatives, but note that such products have a shorter shelf life. In the presence of certain other chemicals, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives may produce substances called nitrosamines, which Ruth Winter's A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients calls "among the most potent cancer-causing ingredients[.]" Thus it may be a good idea to skip products that contain formaldehyde-releasing preservatives along with one or more of the following: monoethanolamine, abbreviated MEAdiethanolamine, abbreviated DEAtriethanolamine, abbreviated TEAMany reputable sources claim there is little to no risk of cancer from these combinations of ingredients, but concerned consumers should at least be aware of the potentiality.Formaldehyde in Hair Straighteners The keratin protein that composes the hair cuticle keeps its shape because of weak hydrogen bonds and relatively strong disulfide bonds. If you have curly or frizzy hair and want sleek, stick-straight locks, those disulfide bonds are going to have to be broken. Hair straighteners do a fairly good job of this, but they use harsh chemicals and can be damaging to the hair. (If salon employees tell you they can straighten hair with flower extracts and happy thoughts, ask to read the ingredient lists on the products they'll use to do it. You'll see what I mean.) The levels of formaldehyde in some hair straighteners may be too high for certain people to tolerate. Users have reported rashes, stomach upset, vomiting, nosebleeds, respiratory difficulties, eye problems, chest pain, and central nervous system effects. A consumer who gets her hair straightened a couple of times a year is obviously at less risk than the stylists who work with these products frequently, but she still might want to stop and think about the possible risk involved. There's mixed information out there on hair straighteners, too. In the April 2010 issue of Allure, the original Brazilian systems were pillaried for "dangerous levels of formaldehyde," but keratin systems were lauded to the skies. Yet the Summer 2010 issue of New Beauty noted that repeated use of keratin systems can "wreak havoc on your health." Thermal or Japanese straightening systems are sometimes called "reconditioning," which sounds pleasant enough; but many contain formaldehyde and lye. Checking salon product labels may actually be pointless with regard to formaldehyde. They may list its liquid form as "methylene glycol" or sneak in the formaldehyde donor "vanillin" instead of putting the word "formaldehyde" on the label. In September 2011, the Brazilian Blowout company was asked by the FDA to lower the levels of formaldehyde in its hair straightener and to stop labeling them "formaldehyde-free." The levels of formaldehyde in the product samples tested by the FDA were 8.7 to 10.4%! Each consumer must use her own judgment on this issue; personally, I'd say "no thanks" and just enjoy my natural slightly wavy hair texture. The Brocato Curlinterrupted Smoothing System is marketed as formaldehyde-free. It smoothes hair with keratin protein and permanent-wave-type ingredients, then colors the hair to keep it straight. However, curly hair will not be perfectly straight after use. In most cosmetics, formaldehyde levels are very low and believed to be safe. Armed with the right information and the strong will required to plow through ingredient lists prior to purchase, most formaldehyde-containing products can be avoided with ease or used with confidence based on the consumer's well-reasoned opinion rather than whatever the cosmetic companies would prefer her to believe this week. How to Clean Your House Like a Professional
While I don't mind housecleaning in the least, I know many women who do not like it at all. In fact, some of the women I know, including my own daughter, absolutely loathe every aspect of housecleaning. Of course, unlike during earlier generations, my daughter's generation more often than not works outside the home, and the last thing women today want to do after toiling all week is to spend their weekends cleaning house. They would rather hire someone else to do it. And that is why housekeeping services have become so popular over the past 50 years and continue to thrive, whether they are large companies with multiple employees or small one-or-two-woman operations. On the other hand, given today's ever-increasing cost of living, many people are considering ways to eliminate unnecessary expenses, and some who are currently relying upon housecleaning services are wondering if they should drop the service and tackle the job themselves. Yet, extra expense or not, they are hesitant because it will mean more work and less time to spend with their families and doing the things they prefer to do on their weekends. That doesn't have to be the case. Before returning to college and entering the field of education, I cleaned houses for a living, so I know how professionals approach the job. I could clean the average sized house in an hour to two hours, depending upon how messy the owners were, and I did a thorough job. So, today, I'm going to share the secrets of the professionals with you by providing you with easy-to-follow guidelines that can help make cleaning your house far easier and less time-consuming than you ever imagined, And, no, I'm not going to lie and say that you will love housekeeping if you follow these guidelines, but I am going to say that following them will allow you to clean like the professionals and, in the process, save your money, as well as your time. Steps to Save Time When Cleaning House A professional can clean a house in a fraction of the time it would take you, even if you were both doing the same exact chores. How is this possible? Its possible because, unlike you, a professional house-cleaner is focused on getting the job done thoroughly but in as little time as possible. Consequently, you need to approach housecleaning like a job for which you are on the clock" and earning a flat fee, regardless of how long it takes you to complete that job, whether one hour or four. You also need to act like you are in the home of a complete stranger. That way you will not be tempted to turn on your favorite daytime soap opera or talk show. Nor will you be inclined to sit down, pour a cup of coffee, and linger over a newspaper, magazine, or your Smartphone or Tablet, checking out the the latest celebrity buzz on Yahoo. What's more, you shouldnt even answer your telephone if it rings, but instead allow all calls to go to your voice mail or answering machine. . You should also clear your homes of all distractions. If you have little children, ask a relative or friend to baby-sit and then reciprocate the favor at another time. Put your pets in their pens or the garage, or let them out to play in the backyard. In other words, if anyone or anything could conceivably hinder your cleaning, temporarily remove it. How to Clean Your House Fast Professionals have a strategy for cleaning a house, one that involves steps. For example, I tackle chores in this order: Pick up clutter throughout the entire house.Put dirty dishes in the dishwasher and turn it on, or if you prefer, wash them by hand. Strip and remake all beds with fresh linens.Put linens in washer.Clean bathrooms (wipe down surfaces; scrub toilet bowl; clean mirrors; mop floor).Put linens in dryer.Dust entire house (include ceiling fans, lampshades, blinds, baseboards, etc.).Polish all furniture.Clean interior glass surfaces (mirrors, tabletops, cabinet fronts, windows).Vacuum carpeted, wood, or tile flooring.Clean kitchen surfaces and sink, as well as interior of microwave.Mop kitchen floor, as well as other solid flooring (Use the right product depending upon the type of flooring). Supplies You Need to Clean Your House When professionals enter a room, they carry with them everything they might conceivably need. They do not make numerous trips back and forth in order to retrieve something they discovered they needed only after entering a room. They are prepared. So you should also be prepared, and one way to have everything on hand is to purchase a plastic bucket or other handy container and fill it with necessary cleaning products, for example: Disinfectant cleanser (suitable for all surfaces)Glass cleanerComet, Ajax, or another granular cleanser for hard-to-clean surfaces and removing stains. Of course, there are also brands that are less abrasive, so choose your own weapon, so to speak. Bleach for removing mold or mildew; however, do not mix bleach with other cleansers since it can create harmful vapors; instead, use it immediately before leaving the room.Assortment of sponges and ragsFeather dusterFurniture polish and/or lemon oilPaper towelsSpray or foam carpet cleaner (for spot removal)Aerosol air-freshener (a nice finishing touch) In conclusion, by following these guidelines, you will be prepared to clean your home like a professional and in the process save time and, ultimately, money. Now, I don't know about you, but I would rather spend my money on something I really need--or better yet something totally frivolous--than give it to someone else for cleaning my house. Eliminate Aphids from Fruit Trees, Vegetables and Herbs Naturally
Aphids are soft-bodied insects that latch onto the leaves and stems of plants, as well as the branches of trees, particularly tender areas with new growth. They feed on the plants sap by sucking out the fluids. A small number of aphids feeding on plants rarely cause significant damage. However, a couple aphids can quickly turn into an infestation. Aphid infestations rapidly devour plants, causing severe damage, especially to young plants. In addition to damaging and killing leaves, some species are capable of injecting a toxin into the plant, causing further damage. Aphids also spread viruses from one plant to another, especially on vegetables. It is essential to Identify aphid infestations early and quickly eliminating them to prevent them from spreading and minimize crop loss. Identifying Aphids on Plants and Trees Clusters of aphids are easily identifiable, although they vary in size and color. Different species feed on different types of plants and may be white, black, brown, yellow, red or green. All aphid species are small, although they can range in size from tiny and barely visible to almost a quarter of an inch. Aphids cause yellowing and curling of plant leaves, often distorting their shape and stunting growth. Areas with large infestations often turn black as a result of fungus growth on the honeydew produced by the aphids. The honeydew fungus quickly kills the affected leaves and branches. Look closely in areas with distorted or black areas, checking carefully under leaves, on stems and around branches. It is also important to examine healthy areas of the plant or tree, as well as those planted nearby. Natural and Inexpensive Products for Killing Aphids Eliminating aphids is a simple but tedious task that does not require expensive products or harmful chemicals. The method you choose depends on the number of aphids present, as well as the extent of the infestation. Small amounts of aphids are easy to pick off the plants by hand. Sturdy plants can also be sprayed down with a pressurized hose; however, this is less effective, especially if the aphids are latched on. For larger infestations, make a cheap and effective aphid spray with vegetable oil, liquid glycerin or castile soap. Oil or Glycerin 1 cup Vegetable Oil or Liquid Glycerin5 to 7 drops Peppermint or Cedarwood Essential Oil (optional)Castile Soap1 part Cold Water1 part Liquid Castile Soap5 to 7 drops Peppermint of Cedarwood Essential Oil (optional)Gently mix the ingredients in a spray bottle and spray the aphids with the solution. Both solutions will suffocate the aphids and they will die almost immediately. The addition of essential oils will help prevent them new aphids from returning. Either wash the dead aphids off the plant or allow the solution to until the next rainfall washes them off. Trim the affected leaves, stems and branches from the plants or trees and discard them in the yard waste. Aphids are easier to manage if you catch them early on, before they cause damage to plants and infest neighboring crops. Although there is no way to completely guard against aphid attacks, there are simple methods you can take to help prevent damaging infestations. Simple Methods to Help Prevent Aphid Infestations The ladybug and the praying mantis are natural predators of aphids. Using chemical sprays can eliminate and deter these beneficial insects from the garden. If ladybugs are not naturally drawn to your garden, many garden centers and online suppliers sell ladybugs in bulk quantities. Mints are natural aphid repellants; however, they have a nasty habit of rapidly taking over an entire garden in a short time. If you decide to use mints as a deterrent, either plant the mints in small containers around the garden or sprinkle dried mint leaves at the base of the plants once a week. Essential oils of peppermint, spearmint and cedarwood also repel aphids. Once a week, spray a mixture of diluted essential oils on and around the plants; use 5 to 7 drops per cup of witch hazel. Thoroughly examine the plants weekly, checking under leaves and between branches, for visible aphids to prevent an infestation. Photos Malysa Stratton Louk. All rights reserved. Mold Remediation Cost
It is advisable to hire professionals from companies that follow IICRC Mold Remediation S502 Guidelines. Usually, mold infestations are found on the damp and moist parts of our homes, especially during the rainy months of the year. Apart from causing health problems, such infestations can gravely damage the house structure, if left untreated for a long time. Mold growth is often seen on the drywall, flooring, bathroom tiles, basement, etc. Minor infestations can be removed using a scrub brush and a mold killer that can be bought from stores. You need to wear rubber gloves and a mask while cleaning areas with mold infestation. In order to eliminate severe mold infestation in large areas, you need to hire professionals. The extent of infestation is one of the major factors that determine the mold remediation cost. Cost Breakdown The total cost of mold remediation may range between $500 to $30,000. Inspection: It is always helpful to get the structure inspected to know whether mold remediation is necessary or not. It is suggested that you get the inspection done by a certified mold inspector. The inspector conducts a thorough examination of areas which are likely to get affected, and checks the humidity conditions and other such aspects. For professional mold inspection, you may need to spend somewhere around $200 to $600. However, for larger homes, the cost can exceed $900. Some reputed mold removal agencies may provide this service free of cost. Remediation: The remediation cost depends on the approach taken. Given below are a few methods used by mold remediation experts. Wet Vacuums: These are vacuum cleaners that are designed for collecting water that is deposited on surfaces.Damp Wipe: This is a method of removal of mold by wiping, scrubbing, or by using a mixture of water and detergent.High-efficiency Particulate Air Vacuum (HEPA): Use of these machines having powerful suctions and filters can help remove mold from dry areas.Removal of Infested Material: When the mold infestation is beyond cleaning, then the infested parts are removed, sealed, and disposed properly.Dry Ice Blasting: This method is used to remove mold from wooden or cement surfaces. Soda blasting and media blasting are the other methods used for removing mold. Extent of Infestation: The most important determinant of mold remediation cost is the area that needs to be treated. If the area is pretty large, professional mold removal services would demand more. It may cost around $500 to $4,000, in order to get rid of mold from an average crawlspace. If the mold infestation has spread to other parts such as the walls, attics, ducts, etc., the remediation cost may range between $2000 to $6,000. In case of structural damage, expenses can be around $10,000 to $30,000. When thinking of the expenses, you need to keep in mind that a major part of the cost includes labor charges that may vary from one locality to another. Therefore, the total cost of mold remediation may also vary depending on factors such as location, extent of infestation, etc. The cost also depends on what sophisticated equipment is used in the remediation process. While estimating approximate costs, you need to consider additional expenses such as plumbing work, drainage system repair, and similar other tasks. Check out the service providers in your neighborhood and compare their prices and services. You can also ask for referrals from friends and colleagues. Please note that the figures mentioned in this article are only cost estimates, and the actual prices may differ depending on various situational factors.

Homeowners insurance agents please help! Mold on water damage questions.?
If the reason the wood is being pulled up, is due to MOLD, then no, it's not going to be covered. If it's ROTTED, or wood damage, then it is. Keep in mind, just because there's mold, doesn't mean it's that scarey stuff you hear about - THAT mold is extremely uncommon. You CAN dry the wood out, bleach it, and voila! mold is gone, until/unless you have another water issue. Mold is normal, mold is everywhere. The REASON mold remediation is excluded from policies, is because in many cases, it's not necessary; pretty much EVERY house mold remediation has it, if you start tearing the house apart; three years after you fix it, it's going to have mold AGAIN; and it's extremely expensive to keep gutting your house every three years. So. Spray some bleach on it, wait a few days for the wood to dry out, and see if the WOOD is warped or damaged, and needs to be replaced. Mold itself - not a good enough reason. https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100511050749AA8Cr5v

Your Coffee Maker Is Full Of Mold. Here's How To Clean It.
We love nothing more than a good cup of coffee. But a good cup of mold? Not so energizing. A 2011 study from NSF International found that about half of coffee makers (we're talking the classic, basket-and-carafe kind here) had yeast and mold growing in their reservoirs. About one in ten were home to coliform bacteria. On average, home coffee reservoirs also had higher germ counts than both bathroom door handles and toilet seats. And while the study tested only 22 households, germ specialist Kelly Reynolds said she doesn't doubt the results. "(Coffee makers) are certainly a moist environment where mold and bacteria are known to grow in high numbers," said Reynolds, who studies household germs at the University of Arizona. "Our bodies can deal with them, but at some point they'll grow to levels high enough to cause sickness." And contrary to what you may believe, hot water isn't enough to get this gunk out. (The advice about running coffee through to disinfect? Not entirely accurate, either.) We asked Carolyn Fort, director of the Home Appliances and Cleaning Products Lab at the Good Housekeeping Research Institute, about the most effective way to clean your coffee maker. The magic ingredient turns out to be vinegar, which (in addition to sanitizing) "decalcifies," or removes the mineral buildup from tap water. If you have a classic coffee maker, Fort says to give it a gentle cleaning every day and to decalcify it depending on how hard the water is where you live. "The carafe, lid and filter basket should be cleaned daily with warm, sudsy water," Fort told The Huffington Post via email. "A coffee maker that's used daily should be decalcified about once per month in hard water areas and every two to three months in soft water areas." Similar rules apply for "pod-based machines" like Keurigs -- debris can clog their many nooks and crannies, so they also benefit from a vinegar run-through every few months, Fort says. It really depends on how often you use your coffee maker and for how long it lies dormant. Because mold spores love to grow in nice, moist, quiet environments... or, say, a coffee maker you've left unwashed on your counter over the weekend. No matter how often you use them, these decalcifying steps (outlined here for classic coffee makers) are the key to better-tasting coffee. I decided anyone guys may well similar to be able to this information, therefore I'm passing on in order to you. I typically compose my extremely own content, yet this was really worth sharing. And we could all go for some of that. Fill the coffee maker's water chamber with equal parts white vinegar and water. Using a paper filter, allow to brew until half the chamber is empty.Turn the coffee maker off and let it sit for 30 minutes, then finish brewing.Rinse the machine by using a new paper filter to brew a pot of clear water. Do this twice.Fill the carafe with warm, sudsy water and some rice as a gentle abrasive. Swirl the mixture in the pot, then use a scrubber sponge to remove any gunk. Rinse and dry.Wipe the outside of the machine with a damp cloth (but remember, this and the previous step should really happen every day).
Voila! Delicious, germ-free coffee! If you're looking for a fresh start with a sparkling clean machine, check out some of Good Housekeeping's favorite new coffee makers, from single-cups to big-time brewers. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/29/how-to-clean-coffee-maker_n_5861026.html

Post-Katrina, Mold Worries Subside But Hardly Disappear聽|聽Susan Buchanan
This article was published in The Louisiana Weekly in the Aug. 8, 2011 edition. Buildings with bathtub rings and musty smells are less prevalent than in the first year or two after Katrina, but mold remains a menace in New Orleans -- which contains 45,000 abandoned structures. Pollen-like spores from mold can be health hazards when they spread. In early August, city schools are opening for the fall semester and officials say they remain vigilant for mold. Siona LaFrance, chief of staff at the Recovery School District in New Orleans, said "the most recent, serious mold issue we had was in 2007 when Joseph Craig Elementary had to be closed and students were sent to school in modular buildings in New Orleans East." Mold was remediated at Craig in the city's Treme section, the interior was rebuilt, and the 85-year-old school reopened in early 2010. "This being New Orleans, with a number of old buildings, there are occasions when mold problems are identified, but we try to address them quickly," LaFrance said. "We monitor for air quality and have an indoor air-quality expert on staff, working with our operations teams." Federal Emergency Management Agency grants to the City of New Orleans, totaling over $150 million for "emergency work" and "permanent work," have included mold treatment, according to the agency. Those funds are part of $10.8 billion that FEMA has committed to rebuild Louisiana infrastructure since Katrina and Rita. "Many of our grants don't use the term 'mold remediation,' but do provide specific remediation, which might include wet vacuuming, damp wiping or HEPA -- high-efficiency particulate air -- vacuuming of interior spaces," said Manuel Broussard, FEMA spokesman in New Orleans. Grants pay for removing contaminated material, and cleaning of air cooling, heating and plumbing Hattiesburg MS flood damage equipment, he said. FEMA's infrastructure projects include New Orleans schools, police and fire stations, community centers, parks, playgrounds, hospitals, jails, roads and sewerage and water facilities. A year ago, the agency committed $1.84 billion for storm-related damage to buildings run by the Orleans Parish School Board and the state's Recovery School District. At Orleans Parish School Board, Herman Taitt, Jr., chief operating officer, is the point man for mold. I determined an individual guys may well similar to this information, therefore I am giving it in order to you. I generally write my own, personal content, yet this is really worth sharing. He said the system's last, major mold treatment was during the rehabilitation of Mahalia Jackson Elementary on Jackson Ave., where "mold grew after minor Katrina damage, followed by a lack of power in the area." An environmental subcontractor removed the mold, and the facility opened in April 2009 after being closed for over a year. Taitt said if mold, wet plaster or a musty smell is reported, his staff can usually address the problem quickly as long as the area is 5 square feet or less. Any leaks are fixed and the hazardous patch is cleaned, bleached and dried. If the moldy area is bigger than five square feet, however, outside environmental engineers take a look at it. Orleans Parish School Board member Woody Koppel, the former school board president, said mold treatment is a standard part of renovation at city schools. He said because of strict FEMA specifications for schools, new construction is typically more cost effective than renovation. Two new schools to be completed later this year are Edward Hynes Charter School in Lakeview and McDonogh 35 in the Seventh Ward, he noted. Koppel, who happens to be a certified mold remediator because of his private construction and apartment management business, said mold has to be taken seriously as a threat to people with allergies or compromised immune systems, but he added "it's something that can be managed in buildings." Koppel said "I worry more about drive-by shootings and swallowing friable asbestos than about mold." He's among those who advocate something other than regular bleach to address mold, saying "bleach only kills the flora, making mold seem to disappear, but it's still present." In his own buildings, Koppel relies on Clorox Outdoor Bleach Cleaner, which The Clorox Company says is a thicker formula than regular bleach. In the city's Katrina-damaged Ninth Ward, Matthew Sheard, project manager with Lowernine.org, prefers JOMAX mixed with bleach and water to kill mold, but said "you can use any brand of fungicide." JOMAX, produced by Zinsser Co., Inc. in New Jersey is a mildew killer that magnifies the strength of bleach. Lowernine.org, founded in 2007, has rehabilitated 25 houses, from beginning to end, with contractors and volunteers doing mold treatment. "We've also worked on a number of other houses where owners may have done mold remediation, plumbing and electrical work, but ran out of money," Sheard said. Sheard advises "spray the JOMAX-bleach-water mixture on framing and then rinse it off. We usually treat homesthree times with this mixture, between other jobs and over a period of time." He said it's easy to miss spots. "You can use a mold test kit, from Home Depot for instance, to make sure it's all gone." Claudette Reichel, professor and extension housing specialist at Louisiana State University AgCenter in Baton Rouge, gave her advice on getting rid of mold. "Bleach can kill mold but that isn't a substitute for mold removal," she said. Dead mold doesn't reproduce, but is as hazardous as live mold -- triggering asthma and allergic reactions and causing other health effects. She said it's important to remove mold completely. She cautioned that bleach can pose health and safety hazards to users, and has no residual or lasting impact on mold. But she said bleach can be a way to kill any lingering mold that remains after removal work. When property owners ignore moisture and mold, they end up in the mess that nearly a decade ago closed Crescent City Towers in New Orleans, the state's third tallest structure -- now called Plaza Tower. After remediation for mold and other hazards, the 45-story building is now clean, and will be auctioned in late September, starting at a minimum bid of $250,000, according to Michael Siegel, president of Corporate Realty in New Orleans. The Crescent City isn't the only place struggling with mold. Bathrooms in hotel and motel rooms anywhere can sport mold and mildew because of inadequate ventilation, Koppel said. "I've seen mold in lots of places in Europe, especially in Venice, Italy, where it was growing on walls and seemed to be part of the local culture," he said. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/susan-buchanan/postkatrina-mold-worries-_b_925851.html
