Jedi apologist until the end of time
One thing I appreciate star wars for always showing consistently is that 95% of all Jedi can't help but be good.
Like this isn't a matter of just being a good person or being trained to be a good person. They literally cannot help but be compassionate and caring. Even when they are doing wrong things, like in acolyte, it is still out of good intentions. It was a huge misunderstanding of course, but they just want everything to be good, which is an unrealistic goal and sometimes that results in bad things because of point of views.
But I can appreciate the fact that not a single fucking Jedi in the entirety of star wars wasn't good when presented with the opportunity. (Pong krell does not count and he can suck my dick) They simply couldn't help it, as the grand inquisitor says in Kenobi. The smart thing would be to not be involved, but even when they are being ACTIVELY HUNTED, They cannot stop themselves from butting in and helping others. Obi wan tried , but ended up helping, Cal tried to hide, ended up exposing himself to save someone, Ezra and Kanan, Ahsoka, Quinlan voss, and these are just the main people , who knows how many other survivors tried to help and ended up sacrificing themselves just so like 3-4 innocents could live. They didn't do anything on a grand scale, but those little acts of kindness probably helped hope from dying out completely.
The Jedi are the literal embodiment of hope and goodness and I fucking love that. Despite everything, and all the defamation palpatine did, the people still considered Jedi good.
Like you know shit is bad when even the criminals are like "the empire is had for business, the Jedi were better"
And i appreciate it. The galaxy is a harsh place, and so is the real world. So it's wonderful seeing a faction that is just good. Sure they made mistakes with Anakin and some other times but like that's upto the people imo, not them as a whole. Where there is pong krell, there is also mace windu, there is also obi wan and Yoda .
And I appreciate them for showing this consistently. Do they make mistakes, yes everyone does. But they were completely finessed by palpatine into losing their way and they STILL managed to do their best.
I am a proud Jedi sympathiser and will probably be executed for that in the empire.

Do yall ever think about how Anakin’s march on the Temple is entirely focused on the younglings? Except for the initial shots of Anakin arriving at the Temple, it’s entirely focused on the younglings or adults reacting to the entire scene, which is still about the younglings.
Not only that, but it’s (nearly all) specifically about the younglings reacting to/interacting with Anakin. The exceptions are Grogu’s POV and Bail showing up at the Temple and seeing a Padawan get shot down.
Like idk man, just the consistent through line of almost every portrayal of Order 66 being focused on the younglings, save the scenes in RotS and the Bad Batch with Clone Force 99 (which STILL initially begins with them witnessing Depa protecting Caleb and then trying to help him), in any Star Wars media, even Disney SW is just.
Like. Even in Tales of the Empire, the FIRST scene with Barriss is her seeing from afar what’s happening at the Temple and asking about it.
Idk. I just think a lot about how whenever Order 66 plays out at Temple, the writing heavily focuses on the younglings and therefore places a heavy emphasis on how Anakin’s largest crime, his most horrific action, his worst betrayal, is the murder of children.
And not just any children, the children of the Order he swore his life to. An Order whose most cherished and sacred tradition is the handing down of knowledge to their younglings. The Jedi love their younglings.
EVERY time you have a Padawan/Master experiencing Order 66 together, the Master relentlessly protects their Padawan. They die protecting their Padawan. They often leave themselves vulnerable to defend their Padawan.
Just that consistent framing that we the audience are meant to take away from any portrayal of Order 66 that the most horrific aspect of it is the murder of the Jedi’s younglings. And whenever the portrayal takes place at the Temple, the consistent message is this is Anakin’s worst action, the ultimate betrayal. THAT is the point of no return for Anakin becoming Darth Vader.
And when Obi-Wan and Yoda are walking through the aftermath????? It’s explicitly said how they can’t believe their younglings weren’t spared. Obi-Wan is in absolute disbelief/bordering on denial because he cannot fathom a world in which Anakin killed the Order’s younglings. It’s a betrayal so great and so heartbreaking and so horrific that Obi-Wan can’t believe Anakin would do that.
Do you guys ever think about that? Do you? Because I am chewing through drywall.

“I am called a great swordsman because I invented a lethal style; but who is greater, the creator of a killing form—or the master of the classic form?” “I’m very flattered that you would consider me a master, but really—” “Not a master. The master,” Mace had said. “Be who you are, and Grievous will never defeat you.”

The Road goes ever on and on Down from the dune where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with eager feet, Until it joins some larger way Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say.
"Master? I have never heard of this song."
"Oh yes, I learnt it from the uh - the planet Middle Earth."

I'm sorry, but to me the peak of on screen male-to-male intimacy was accomplished by Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor in The Phantom Menace.
Tumblr media
The way Obi-Wan RUSHES to Qui-Gon's side the EXACT SECOND he is sure Darth Maul ain't coming out of that melting pit. The way he FOLDS himself around his dying mentor.
The beard touch.
It's not captioned in this gif, but while this is happening, Qui-Gon whispers to him "No. It's too late." Trying to keep down any fear of hurting him Obi-Wan has, trying to squash any feelings of resentment or anger that the young man would be pointing inward just then for not being fast enough, not being good enough. Because that would lead him to the darkness.
I am already gone, please let me see your face free of anguish for my last moments.
The way Obi-Wan's hand moves over Qui-Gon's chest, feeling for his heartbeat, maybe trying to coax the living force into keeping Qui-Gon alive JUST LONG ENOUGH so that he can drag him into the palace and to a bacta tank.
Tumblr media
And then when the perspective shifts to show us Qui-Gon?
The little caress on Obi-Wan's cheek? Pretty much the only evidence we have up until the cut away that this poor kid just watched his father figure/mentor/brother-in-arms/constant companion/comrade/teacher get stabbed and is either very close to or already starting to bawl his eyes out? The way his voice is just so soft (probably because he was stabbed through the diaphragm) as he imparts his dying wish? Him basically begging Obi-Wan to remember what he told him in the swamps, that he will be a great Jedi and is wiser than Qui-Gon himself? That he should believe in himself?!
The last breath? The closing of the eyes? Obi-Wan only being able to nod because if he says anything he WILL LOOSE IT. Him resting the bridge of his nose on Qui-Gon's as his best friend becomes one with the Force?
Tumblr media
The way Obi-Wan cradles his head?
And then that last pan away, when we see what is left of his resolve from the moment just shatter and his shoulders shake and he crumples against the body in his arms?
Yea... No...
These two? Nothing is ever going to beat this moment for me. It's so sad but just so well acted.
We did not deserve this performance in 1999.
We do not deserve this performance NOW.

Translation of note above: (original tweet)
Sat. 19 March 99 Had to get up at 5:30am Quite a laugh today. George Lucas and Ewan McGregor Ewan was just like I remembered him from pre-fame days - just friendly and jokey all the time. Chatted to me and everyone. George Lucas was quiet and lost in Star Wars world. Ewan McG said "If I'm a Jedi, how come I don't know he's a bad guy?" and George L. said "The dark side of the force is very dark and it stops you from seeing it."
I love this!

I wonder: Do Americans know about american school buses? Not their existence in general, but how they're seen overseas.
Over here, they're one of the symbols of America, on par with the Statue of Liberty, the flag, the Eagle, and well ahead of any chain restaurant you can name. People won't know any US states, but they will know these vehicles.
The thing is, here in Germany, we don't have dedicated school buses. The general idea is that kids go to school on their own. When that's not practical, they're expected to use (and given free tickets for) public transit. Public transit is designed around this requirement; there are many places where there is a bus, and anyone can get on it, but the route and timetable really only makes sense for school children. In case a dedicated school bus is really needed, that's generally subcontracted out, and the lines either use something like a Sprinter Van for smaller routes, or a normal city or interurban bus (often a used one that's a bit older). School trips are normal public transit, or a rented bus, typically a coach or regional bus.
It's not a perfect system, in the past couple of years there's been an epidemic of people bringing their kids to school in their cars instead of letting them walk, which is less than ideal. It is what it is. But building a dedicated network of public transit lines only for students, and building dedicated vehicles only for that, has never occurred to anyone here.
Of course we know about these buses, from movies and such, but they're as foreign here as cacti or pick-up trucks (actually we're seeing more and more of these here) or yellow cabs (all europeans will assume all cabs in the US are yellow until they actually visit).
You do see these buses here at times, because people still generally like the idea of the US, even if they have a lot of issues with a lot of details, and so folks bring them over, along with stretch limos and stuff (also not really a thing here). And of course, if someone goes to all that trouble, they don't do it to haul school kids, they rent it out for city tours or as a party bus or whatever.
So you see these yellow things as a symbol of faraway places, scenic vistas, some vague undefined idea of freedom that doesn't necessarily hold up to any contact with reality, and it's just a huge part of the whole US aesthetic.
And then you go to a student exchange with the US, and you finally get the chance: You yourself get to ride in one of these iconic chrome yellow buses! It looks just like in the movies! You get in, you drive in them a little…
…and you realise they're shit. Just the worst buses in the western world. Terrible suspension. Uncomfortable seats with weirdly high backs (so they don't have to put seatbelts in, they just restrict how far kids can fly in an accident). Everything made out of the cheapest materials. Turns out the reason why the US uses school buses like that instead of normal modern city buses, which the US has, is to save money and because they just hate kids.
And then it hits you why US Americans say "as American as apple pie", a dish that is made and enjoyed literally anywhere in the world, instead of "as American as yellow school buses". Of course the Americans already knew all this. They got tortured by these things forever. It would never occur to them to see this as a symbol of America, it's just a normal part of life for them. It's a symbol of school and school life and sometimes normalcy, and tells us that these actors getting out of it are supposed to be teenagers, nothing more.
But most people in Europe have, of course, never ridden on these buses. So when they see them in movies and TV, that's a giant big yellow signifier that we're not in Hessen or Wallonia or wherever anymore. A symbol of a different world, one that may be at most a once-in-a-lifetime-experience for most people, just like a picture of a tropical beach, Incan Pyramids, the Great Wall of China, or Hildesheim (there's no reason to go there twice). And I think Americans don't know that, and that's fascinating.
