Not to hot tag myself in here, but I think this analysis of video game improv as professional wrestling is pretty much spot on. In fact, during the making of this little video I made mostly fixated on contemporary scripted content in the Minecraft scene, there was an entire segment of analysis I cut to bridge the transition from gladiators to the carnival to the fairground origins of fixed professional wrestling. Most of that was scrapped, since I figured it would be a bridge too far to ask of viewers in a video already prone to lengthy tangents, but the parallel at least survived implicitly through some of the vintage professional wrestling clips I chose to accompany the monologue. Like Werner Herzog famously said of professional wrestling, "the poet must not avert his eyes." He called wrasslin' a sort of "crude drama," but this was explicitly in reference to the WWF's Vince McMahon-produced melodramas that occurred outside the ring (which, to be fair, are almost always the weakest part of pro wrestling as an art form since they typically amount to community theater). Like Herzog, I would call what happens in the ring a crude drama, too, but in that case not at all pejoratively— this is the medium of wrestling's greatest strength. It is a story told through action, through the movement of bodies and physical exchanges. This is a primordial mode of pantomime, perhaps one of our earliest wordless forms of storytelling. Call it crude if you must, but that implicitly concedes how deep in the species that impulse runs. I would call that art. And since awakening from my frozen slumber and dusting off my presence around these parts, it has consistently been my contention that Minecraft and YouTube videos can be, too. Solar said it better than I ever could.
like okay we've very intentionally quarantined off all mcyt posting to another blog bc we know it annoys people but at some point i think there should maybe be a conversation around how people treat nascent artistic mediums as particularly foul/offensive/annoying/unworthy of serious analysis and how as a result the artistic capability of those mediums is set back by years while a lot of founding "texts" from these mediums start getting lost and overlooked. comics is wrestling is video games is ingame improv. you don't have to like a particular medium but the barest modicum of respect would really help to make fandom around it less annoying.

I agonized over this reblog for like a quarter of an hour as I tried in vain to come up with the funniest possible reply to this confession in the hopes that I would be able to prove you right, random anon. Ultimately this was the best I could come up with. Sorry to disappoint you, whoever you are. Your faith in me was unfounded.
frostbyte freeman would do numbers on tumblr. maybe not big numbers but at least like low hundreds mildly amusing text post numbers
