I don't think we talk enough about the fact that Noelle seems to be canonically a vegetarian (She reacts poorly to the darkburger having real meat, and gets a lot of healing from the giga salad). Food is important for the characterization of all members of the Fun Gang.
For Kris, their love of chocolate is an important piece of their identity that gets through to us, fairly early on too, and the fact that they actually prefer pies to chocolate is used in chapter 3 to emphasize that we really don't know Kris at all.
For Susie, it's very clear that she doesn't get enough food at home and that she makes up the difference by eating objects that are definitely not food. Her big eater tendencies give us an important look into her backstory, and also flesh out how gleefully unfeminine she is in every aspect of her life (which then ties into how gender is used in Deltarune).
For Ralsei, the cakes he "bakes" (explodes out of a cauldron fully formed) for his friends symbolize his people-pleasing nature, and the fact that he's never eaten any of his own cakes until Susie insists upon it (which he immediately decides he likes a lot) is another detail about how worthless he sees himself as. In his mind, it's his purpose to bake cakes for his friends without ever getting a bite of cake himself, and Susie insisting he eats some fits in with how much she cares about Ralsei and wants him to care about himself.
And Noelle? Food is important to her characterization too. Because she shares food with Kris. If you give her a choco-diamond or a scarlixer, she promises to share it with Kris. Because we can't see Kris's puppy eyes, but she can. We may or may not know that Kris loves chocolate, but Noelle definitely does, and probably sees it as more than a little weird for Kris to willingly share chocolate. Noelle is literally and figuratively closer to Kris than we ever will be. As I mentioned before, food makes it clear that we don't know Kris— and food makes it clear that Noelle does.

what if your doppelganger loved being you more than you ever loved being yourself. they're better at being you and everyone loves them and it feels almost selfish to want your life back. i want clone horror but the horror is that the thing trying to replace you is also the person you always wanted to be.

Just want to share what my dyslexia looks like.
- omitting any negations in sentences. I could read a rule that says not to do a thing, and my brain will straight up ignore the "NOT" part and make me believe that im encouraged to do a thing, unless it's something absurd like "please do jump off a plane" or the word NOT is written in bold capital flamin hot red letters impossible not to notice (and sometimes i really don't)
- mixing up numbers. three looks like an eight, four looks like a seven. Seven looks like a one.
- Mixing the words' roles in a sentence. "Drank married water" is what I think of when reading "Mary drank water". Idk what brain processes even result in this.
- Just bullshitting based on the first letters of the words i read. "What the fuck are you doing" -> "where the fuck are you going"
- If there's a song playing on the background, lyrics mix up with the text. There was a song mentioning a mother, so i almost sent a funny tiktok meant for lovers in a relationship to my mom.

There is only one story in Hometown... mostly. The Prophecy is Lord of the Hammer is Dragon Blazers is the local religion. All the art that you can really call pop culture – that shapes how kids, or adults, relate to one another – emerges from the Prophecy. One single fairy tale, repeated over and over but still carrying its core ideological payload of destiny, and something terrible at the end.
Susie fundamentally couldn't fit in until she found her place in the Prophecy, and her self-image as someone who really isn't a bully is increasingly reliant on being the girl with hope crossed on her heart instead – reflected in her incidental exposure to Dragon Blazers via a Lost and Found cartridge, such that she's missing context and playing social catch-up compared to her peers.
And this is true of almost all media, but it's not true of horror. Blood Crushers, the movie about a killer severed hand, is the one piece of fiction referenced in any detail that has absolutely nothing to do with the Prophecy; not surprisingly, Noelle hides her interest in it from her family (playing the Glaceir sequence in secret; watching scary movies with Dess, the same scary stuff Kris remembers being interested in in her room), while Susie the outsider loves it openly.
The secret bosses, with their recurring fixation on freedom, are framed via the tropes of horror: killer clowns! Haunted puppets! An Evil Video Game! To break away from the single story that gives our lives structure is a traumatic rupture, which the Dark Worlds – shaped as they are by a culture that has plenty it refuses to look at, in their kids and in their lives – cannot imagine as anything but, well, a horror.

The show's ruined!
I'm ruined! Hideous! Washed up
Now I'm repulsive, I can't live like this
I give up. I see no point in living if I can't be beautiful
Fine! You think you got it bad!
I've never been beautiful in my entire life!
Mettaton...

and idk how to explain it but whatever dess + asriel had going on in deltarune was every 'i saw the tv glow' of them. and not even in the transsexual subtext way (although it can apply, hello headcanoners) but in the more literal sense.
something something, escaping the cage of reality to find your 'true self' buried in fiction, dess 'disappearing' (presumably into the dark world) and reappearing as a more primal/authentic version of herself (the knight), asriel goes off to college because he can't understand and/or cope with becoming his true self/corrupted self, something something, you get me
