Oh my god, I totally get what you mean with “people who’ve looked like they’ve worked hard all their lives”. It’s just the silent dread and exhaustion but also anger in someone’s eyes that can give a character like Ghost his flare. I guess it would ofc make sense that someone who’s portraying a skilled sas soldier should also look buff and rough on the edges. The squeaky-clean look would put me off too. It’s horrible but I always think of this stupid meme that is like “you have the eyes of a sad Eastern European pornstar” and that’s the type of vibes I get from Ghost. He’s so tragic as a character but ofc also capable. He’s horrible and that’s what is so appealing about him overall.

Idk sorry for all the rambling. I just love to see how other’s get the same vibes as I do from Ghost.

i think that my absolute favorite part of giving ghost a rough childhood is that in any other story it would make him a kinder and more compassionate person as an adult, but this is a story about war and war needs men who can survive on rations, who don't complain when they go a few days without a shower, who sleep on hard mattresses and share their meal bars with their brothers. this is a story about poverty preparing men to be soldiers. it is not a story about honor. there are no places of worship which could wash clean the hands that rack guns between shelled houses and no gods that could unhollow the eyes that track them like prey.

ghost could be beautiful, he could catch your eye across the bar and stop your breath short. he could have dark curls and a charming scar along his cheek. he could smile at you, tight lipped, but genuine. and you could wander closer until you see that the dim lights weren't hiding his eyes, they really are that dark, that his skin beneath them is purpled, that his lips are chapped, that his fingers are gnarled from labor. and he could open his mouth and you wouldn't even hear the words that spilled from it, because you wouldn't be looking at a man, you would be looking at a separate species entirely. forced to reconcile your place in the world, to look down at your cottony pelt and realize that all of the fight and fire in you would never amount to the teeth and mass that this man carries like they were born to him. they probably were.

and you would think suddenly that there is not so great a distance between the dogs that keep you safe and the wolves that circle your pasture, but the space between you and them is a whole other beast entirely.
