the lyrics "drowning in burning bright abyss / even at stratospheric depths / this vertigo of bliss" are so beautifully contradictory and oxymoronic, hear me out:

"abyss" typically means a deep or wide space, a hole, depths, someplace where you can't see the bottom, dark, unexplored. yet vessel's abyss is "burning" and "bright".

and then "stratospheric" refers to extreme heights, but vessel uses that word to describe "depths". he's simultaneously free falling (an element also used throughout EIA, specifically to refer to extreme feelings, something all encompassing and overwhelming; "falling free from the final parallel", "feels like falling into the sea / from outer space in seconds to me") but also rising higher than he's ever been (possibly in terms of fame (?))

wording the lyrics like this certainly creates a kind of "vertigo" effect, which vessel then feels is blissful. it's terrifying and exhilarating at the same time, never just one or just the other. the entire album is filled to the brim with complex and conflicting emotions (about fame and creating music, but also about love, infatuation, desire, reflecting on the past etc.)

additionally, infinite baths has both. "nightmares of the ocean / the precipice i'm approaching" vs. "something is lifting the bones / something is dancing in revelry / wider than oceans below / taller than titans on box springs"... there's void and darkness, but there is also some light and hope, however vague, to extinguish it. in regard to that, infinite baths is such a perfect closing song to me, ending all those intense and confusing feelings with a simple but powerful "i will be what i am"
