Looking at pictures of beautiful Cherokee-made river cane baskets is so difficult, though. Because not only did the colonial US uproot and kill so, so many Cherokee peoples and do its damndest to destroy their culture, but we actually destroyed the very landscape from which that culture sprang. The canebrakes are all but gone. I've never seen one. They used to be vast. Now people don't know they existed. Don't think I'll ever get over that.
But it still exists. Rivercane, North America's native bamboo is not all gone, any more than the peoples who lived in partnership with it. There are research and conservation projects out there. So here. I can't even find a good photo of a true, large canebrake, but there's this:

And for scale, if you squint, this photo came up a few times as I look:

I'd like to imagine a future where we learn to live in teamwork with this amazing plant again, using it to create beautiful things like this basket.

The source of this image and one above is well worth a read as well.
But more than that, I'd like to think we could see it as a tool to address modern problems as well, as bamboo is used in much of Asia, and a partner in the fight against climate change and environmental degradation.
I just hope that someday, maybe when I'm old, I can see with my own eyes a vast forest of rivercane, teeming with life.

"these researchers published a paper on something that literally any of us could have told you 🙄" ok well my supervisors wont let me write something in my thesis unless I can back it up with a citation so maybe it's a good thing that they're amplifying your voice to the scientific community in a way that prevents people from writing off your experiences as annecdotal evidence

That’s Louis Rossman, a repair technician and YouTuber, who went viral recently for railing against Apple. Apple purposely charges a lot for repairs and you either have to pay up or buy a new device. That’s because Apple withholds necessary tools and information from outside repair shops. And to think, we were just so close to change.

Oh and I want to fight all the Gen Z kids who are like ‘teehee, we’ll just do lavender marriages instead!’ Some of us are adults who want equal rights and protections under the law of our land.

I really think we should stop saying "kid-friendly" and start saying "ad-friendly". We shouldn't indulge these companies and their excuses anymore. I also think that continuing to pretend that this is about "protecting the children" pushes a lot of the blame onto kids and teens, who don't have the political power to push through any of this censorship legislature. Corporations and governments are to blame.

From @.the.andrey.x and @.mesarvot on Instagram: "Young refuseniks burn their IOF draft papers in the middle of Tel Aviv.
They refuse to serve in the Israeli Occupation Forces, and are willing to go to military jail for their position. The new generation of refuseniks are supported by the older, many of them spent months in jail already."

Tips for sensitive/fearful puppies from my experience (not an expert):
- Start really small: expose them to noises from further away or contact in smaller doses and work your way up.
- if they show any signs of fear, start even smaller.
- keep it fun and lighthearted! When grooming, clipping nails etc sometimes people will go quiet, still & stare intently to focus on what they're doing, which can spook a sensitive puppy if they're used to being talked to, and because your body language has changed suddenly
- when introducing a new object, let the puppy come up and investigate it, don't move it towards them until they're familiar and comfortable with it. Playing with the puppy while you hold the item in the other hand or have it nearby can be a good way to introduce it without pressuring the puppy to interact with it
- introduce new items/activities at ground level if possible where the puppy has a chance to move away, and ALWAYS LET THEM MOVE AWAY IF THEY WANT TO. Feeling trapped or restrained can make an item/experience scary
- just being restrained or confined on its own is also something to desensitise. Being on a small table that they can't easily jump down from, with a groomer standing in front of them blocking their likely escape path, is a form of confinement that can increase stress in a fearful or sensitised (has had bad experiences) dog. It's worth desensitising puppies to this situation so they know it's fine and don't feel like they need to escape.
hey, this is non-judgmental and well-intentioned advice from pen: if you have a puppy, especially a puppy with a coat that is going to require regular maintenance, you MUST do the work of desensitizing them while they're young to getting brushed, having their paws trimmed, having their nails done, etc.
get them used to having their paws and ears and face touched. contact the groomer you're going to use and ask if they have advice if you don't know how to start or what to do. where I worked, we would even let puppies come in for free for an hour or two to be in the shop and play in daycare and practice standing nicely on the grooming table and do things like letting the other end of a nail dremmel touch their paw briefly (which you can practice at home with an old electric toothbrush) to get them used to the sensation so they could see it's not scary and won't hurt them. I'm not gonna guarantee that all groomers will have that policy because they won't, but if you've got a dog that has to get groomed regularly that won't cooperate and is terrified and aggressive, you're going to have a big problem.
also potentially an expensive problem when groomers add fees for bad behavior that requires additional time/assistance from other workers.

funny how the popular conception of reptiles is that theyre like, slimy and wet. meanwhile they have smooth dry scales, while we mammals are covered in glands that secrete water and oils and other chemicals. where do we sweaty greasy synapsids get off calling lizards slimy
