Author's summary: Molly has always had a scientist's relationship to certainty.

holyfant's comments: As much as the original focused on Irene, this remix focuses on Molly; which makes reading the two fics together a very pleasant experience, as much as they hold up well on their own. greywash develops a Molly who is deeply believable, deeply human, deeply relatable to. The way Molly relates to medicine and why she decided to start occupying herself with the dead rather than keeping the living alive is explored in a satisfying and touching way in this piece. We get references to her dad, to her training, to the way she handles keeping Sherlock's secret. In the spirit of the original, this remix focuses on one half of the pairing: Molly, with Irene nearly an afterthought. Together, the two stories give us the full scope. Apart, they develop characters we can nearly touch. To be honest, I love every word in this fic so, so much, and I urge everyone to run, not walk.

holyfant's comments: This short little piece focuses on Irene in a fresh, evocative way. It gives us bursts of clear, clever prose and an Irene who is drawn in confident strokes - no mean feat in so few words. Molly barely features, but I love how she is the goal of the whole thing; Irene is looking for her, and in that way Molly becomes just as important as Irene. I'd call this story a brief, beguiling spell.

And don't forget to watch this space next week, because something else is coming that is related to this gem of a story.

I’m going to use this space to recommend some lesser-known fics that have caught my imagination. Due to my taste, they will probably be fairly short, and I’m going to focus on fics I think are especially well written with regards to language and/or characterization. I don’t have a firm schedule planned, so they’ll pop up when they pop up.

holyfant breathes a world of life into the mysterious but memorable character of Kate from ASIB. By filling out Kate’s backstory in an entirely believable and IC way, the relationship between Kate and Irene becomes deeper, and even sheds light on the relationship between Sherlock and John by comparison. Kate is herself a strong character who still falls deeply into Irene’s charms and flaws (because who wouldn’t). Beautiful use of language and imagery; it could easily stand on its own as a non-fan work. (And it has photography in it, which I always like.)

It's not a terribly long piece, but it gives us a lovely fleshed-out take on Kate, whose world view and relationship with Irene are given body and texture through just a few lines. This is a lovely exploration of what it must be like to live with and work for a prodomme and how Irene and Kate draw the lines between their professional and private lives. As always from pasiphile, you can expect spot-on dialogue, a thoughtful and realistic depiction of D/s dynamics, and hot sex.
