Liechtenstein (German: Fürstentum Liechtenstein, English: Principality of Liechtenstein) is a European microstate located in the alps between Switzerland (the cantons of St. Gallens and Grisons specifically) and Austria. The Principality came into being on 23 January, 1719, when Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI united the Counties of Vaduz and Schellenberg to form the Principality, recognizing Anton Florian as the first prince. The Principality navigated its way adroitly through the wars of the 18th century, the Napoleonic Wars, the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire and then the German Confederation, and two World Wars. Today, Liechtenstein has one of the highest gross domestic products per capita in the world and enjoys a high standard of living. About 36,000 people live in the Principality, the capital of which is the town of Vaduz. The country is approximately 160 square kilometers in area. This blog exists in consideration of the historical improbabilities and skillful diplomacy that brought the Principality safely into the third millennium. Hi! Glad you liked the shot. It was taken from my balcony at the Park-Hotel Sonnenhof (sunset, if I remember correctly). I loved Liechtenstein! I was a little disappointed Schloss Vaduz is closed to visitors but I understand it's a working castle and a private home. Thanks again! x
vielen Dank für die Information! :-D

for my English-speaking followers: the incorrect version of the 81 soldiers story is spreading once again. and an update: by following the links back, I think the reason it's so popular is because it shows up in a Lonely Planet guide! if that's the kind of fact-checking they go in for, I know I'm never using them again.

thanks, friends!
(to be clear, I'm not a past ambassador to Liechtenstein (in case anyone had any doubt) — David Beattie, the author of Liechtenstein: A Modern History is.)
I should maybe note I have some issues with Beattie, especially his attitude towards the monarchy (i.e. basically it seems that in his eyes they can do no wrong), but in this case, his history is accurate.
"World War 1~ In Liechtenstein’s last military engagement in 1866, none of the 80 soldiers sent to invade Italy were injured, and that in fact 81 returned, including a new Italian ‘friend’." SOMEONE HETALIZE THIS HOLY CRAP
