When I first watched Game of Thrones, it was the later seasons (6-8). And I initially liked them a lot on a visual scale and spectacle level because epic fantasy is awesome, especially on a surface level, obviously. And I didn’t think too much about the creative decisions made by the show runners other than ‘Hey! Crazy, right? But cool’. And then I started reading the books (four and five) and the previous four or five seasons. And that’s when I realised ‘… Oh. … Oh(!). … YIKES! And NOW I can see what they mean by.. … No! Jesus!’.

And now I know what it feels like to have a very successful and recognised adaptation look so visually stunning yet fail or go too far on so many fronts, character wise, theme wise, and, yes, sex and violence wise. And I would’ve NEVER, EVER supported Sansa’s treatment in season 5 had I watched and read and known before. But who knows? Wasn’t my thing before 2016. But maybe not my thing now?

I live in the present. And all is in flux, so maybe back into the world of Ice and Fire eventually?
