Artist Statement | Reflecting on My Semester in Figure Drawing | Fall 2024
This semester has been an incredible journey of growth and exploration in figure drawing. Each assignment pushed me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to embrace both the challenges and beauty of artistic expression. Here's a reflection on my learning experience and my aspirations moving forward.
Favorite Materials
Throughout the semester, I discovered a deep appreciation for graphite pencils. Their versatility allowed me to experiment with a range of values and textures, from soft shading to bold, precise lines. Working with graphite gave me control and flexibility, helping me build confidence in capturing details and creating depth in my drawings. Although I have more to learn with the material itself I've learned a great deal through the semester.
Favorite Assignment
My favorite assignment was the skeletal studies. This project challenged me to focus on precision and anatomy, giving me a stronger foundation in understanding the human form. The process of layering detail while maintaining a sense of structure was both rewarding and enlightening. With the knowledge I've revised this semester i have a better understanding of the form and shape of skeletal parts within the body.
Overcoming Obstacles
One of the most significant challenges I faced was adapting to gesture drawing, particularly in the beginning. Capturing the essence of a pose in mere seconds felt overwhelming, but I learned to trust my instincts and let go of perfectionism. Through consistent practice and feedback, I developed a greater sense of confidence and fluidity in my lines.
Overcoming Material and Assignment Challenges
Of course, the semester wasn’t without its challenges. One of the biggest obstacles I encountered was during the inking assignments, particularly when learning how to manipulate ink to achieve both control and fluidity. Inking is unforgiving you can’t erase mistakes, which forced me to slow down and think through every stroke. By practicing and experimenting with different tools, embracing a more deliberate process, I was able to develop a bit of inking but over all still have a lot to learn from this medium in art.
Final Thoughts and Future Goals
This semester has taught me not only technical skills but also the importance of resilience and patience in the creative process. I've gained a deeper appreciation for the human form and the countless ways it can be interpreted through art.
Looking ahead to next semester, my goal is to build on the foundations I've developed by experimenting with color, mixed media and ink, I also want to refine my understanding of light and shadow to create more dynamic compositions. Ultimately, I hope to use these skills to further define my artistic voice and explore new dimensions in my work.
This class has been a transformative experience, and I am excited to continue this journey with renewed enthusiasm and curiosity for years to come wherever this field of work may take me.
