LINK TO CHAPTER 1
Izuku wakes up to a scream.
“Eri?!”
He scrambles across the corridor and opens the door to his Mom’s room. Fingers clawing desperately at the handle.
“Shh, my baby. You’re safe. We’re here.”
Eri’s trembling body is pulled tightly into their Mom’s chest. Inko smiles tiredly at Izuku from behind Eri’s white hair and watches as the stress melts out of her son's body as he takes in the situation.
Izuku makes his way over to sit on the edge of the bed.
“Hey, Little Bird. I’ve got you.” His hand comes up to stroke Eri’s bed hair.
Slowly, they make their way downstairs.
Inko turns on the hob and cracks three eggs into the skillet. All three of them staring vacantly out of the kitchen window at the absence of the miners that usually are making their way down to the mines. Somewhere in the neighbourhood, a child is crying and their sobs echo down gaps between the houses. But other than that the only sounds that can be made out are the birds and the bees.
The world is quiet on a reaping morning.
A heavy silence weighing down on the neighbourhood with foreseen grief hanging over their heads.
They eat breakfast in silence.
Izuku gathers up the plates and knives as his Mom ushers Eri into the bathroom, water on the stove heating up for the washbasin. Izuku washes the dishes staring out at the drawn curtains of the Bakugous. The silence seems heavier in the absence of Mistuki and Kacchan’s bickering.
After putting the plates and cutlery away, Izuku heads upstairs to put his Sunday best on: a shirt from his father, and the only pair of school trousers they had ever been able to afford. Izuku does the buttons up on the ambiguously white shirt and tries not to notice how the tight collar feels like a noose around his neck.
Hearing his Mom and sister come up the stairs, Izuku heads down himself to wash his face and brush his teeth. His morning routine feels silly in the wait for what’s to come.
He stares up at the reflection of his hair in the mirror. Why couldn’t he have been born with hair that was more obedient?
A knock comes from the door.
Izuku holds his breath as he trudges over, not knowing what to expect. Maybe they called the whole thing off?
Wishful thinking.
“Izuku! I brought you a present.” Mitsuki Bakugou stands on the porch with wide arms, her husband and son tucked behind her.
Stepping into Mitsuki’s embrace gratefully, Izuku smiles at Kacchan from over her shoulder. He’s holding his arm out for his father to hold on to, and nods at Izuku when their eyes meet.
Mitsuki pulls back and proudly shows Izuku the tie she had brought over for him. It’s green like his hair.
Thanking her, Izuku steps aside to let them all into the house. He smiles as Eri comes running down the stairs to be swept up into her Auntie's arms, Inko following behind and greeting them all. His Mom comes up to Kacchan to hug him, and Kacchan lets her without any complaint - a feat only achieved by the Midoriyas so far. Masaru teases him gently and Eri covers her ears when Mitsuki shouts about how unfair it is over her head.
After what she deems a good enough disciplining, Mitsuki is wandering off into the bathroom with Eri and the ridiculously expensive looking ribbons she had brought for her hair. Inko and Masaru wander over to the table in the corner with a pot of tea and Kacchan comes over to slip a hand into Izuku’s and drag him upstairs.
With the door closed behind them, Katsuki brings Izuku in for a quick kiss before yanking the tie out of Izuku’s grasp.
“You can never tie these things right.”
“Lucky I have you for that then.”
“Yeah cause all I’ve ever wanted to do was be a professional tie tie-er” Kacchan states dryly.
“Can tying ties be a profession if I don’t pay you?”
“It can be if you pay my wages in kisses.” Katsuki leans towards Izuku, pressing his handsome smirk closer to Izuku's lips.
Izuku turns bright red.
“I… Kacchan!”
Katsuki dives in closer to talk next to his ear, “Do we have a deal, Doll?”
He nips Izuku's earlobe.
Izuku explodes.
“Kacchan…” He darts away from Katsuki as he tries to press a line of kisses down his neck, pulling his arms up to hide the deep blush on his face.
He just starts to kiss Izuku’s arms instead.
“Our parents are downstairs!” Another peck. “Kacchan!”
“Okay, fine.”
The assault stops.
When Izuku brings his arms down from his face, he’s greeted by the sight of a pouting Kacchan. Izuku smiles and pecks him one last time before dragging him back down the stairs with a now perfectly tied tie tucked beneath his collar.
Mitsuki grins at them when they enter the room, waggling her eyebrows at them. Izuku blushes and looks away, Kacchan tells her to fuck off.
With all three of the children back in the room together, each dressed in their best clothes, the weight of the situation seems to down on them again. The mood turns sombre and quiet. Both mothers wandering over to tug their childrens’ clothes into the perfect positions once again. Inko leaves a kiss on all three foreheads.

LINK TO CHAPTER 1
Inko smiles at Izuku from across the room as he kisses his sleeping sister’s hair. Eri had passed out almost as soon as she had snuggled down into her Momma’s bed. Lulled to sleep by the sweet murmurs of her family talking about everyday life.
Izuku bids his Mom goodnight with a kiss on her cheek before she climbs in bed to wrap her arms around Eri where Izuku had just been. Izuku switches off the light and quietly closes the door behind him, stepping across the corridor to his room.
He clambers over to the window above his bed and peers out to the Bakugous’ house a few metres in front of him.
Kacchan’s light is still on.
Using their usual signal, Izuku pulls out the jar of pebbles he keeps under his bed for this purpose and throws three in succession across to Kacchan’s window. Each stone hits its target perfectly. They’ve been doing this for almost two decades now.
A shadow appears behind the curtains and Izuku smiles as Kacchan peeks his head out from behind the curtains. Kacchan disappears for a moment to switch off his light before he’s back and opening his window wide.
“Hi, Kacchan.”
“I knew you wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight, Loser.”
Izuku rolls his eyes, “Says you. It’s 10pm.”
Kacchan’s eyes go wide before he turns around to check his clock. “Damn… Touché.”
Humming, Izuku lets himself bask in the quiet hum of the summer evening for a few moments. Summer nights have always felt so tranquil to Izuku. It’s a shame he isn’t feeling the same way right now.
“Eri cried earlier…”
“She’s too much like you for her own good.”
“Hey.” Izuku glares at his boyfriend. Kacchan’s face is soft and he realises that Kacchan was only trying to make him laugh. Izuku smiles. “You’re not wrong, I guess.”
“I’m never wrong.” Kacchan pauses, looking concerned. “Has she fallen asleep?”
Despite Eri and Kacchan’s rocky relationship, Izuku has never needed to wonder whether his boyfriend actually cares for his little sister or not. As much as Kacchan tries to hide it, he can be incredibly doting when it comes to Eri. Even when they were younger it was obvious how much Kacchan would look out for her.
If a boy ever looked Eri’s way, they would soon be scared away by the glaring blond standing protectively over her. And Izuku doesn’t even want to think about what Kacchan might do to someone that hurt Eri.
Izuku just about manages to hold back his grin.
“Yeah she’s passed out with Mom. I wore her out with my rambling.”
“Hah. Figures.”
“Hey!”
They both fall into silence again.
Even with it looming above their heads like storm clouds, they’ve been avoiding talking about the reaping all day. It happens every year, but they still get scared every time July comes around again.
“It’s Eri’s first reaping, isn’t it?”
Izuku frowns.
“You know it is. She turned 12 last December.”
Her name is only in there once.
It can’t be Eri.
It can’t.
“Izuku, look at me.”
Teary green eyes meet confident crimson.
“It’s going to be okay.” Kacchan’s tone is strong and unwavering, Izuku’s breath hitches on his first sob. “No matter what happens - we will be okay.”
They don’t break eye contact even as the last of Izuku’s resolve crumbles and tears start pouring down his cheeks. Izuku wishes he could crawl across the gap between their windows and huddle down into Kacchan’s arms.
The warm gaze meeting his own from the other side of his window will have to do for now.
“You cried like this on your first reaping too. And that turned out okay, didn’t it? And shit, Deku, you had your name in three times at your first reaping and they still haven’t picked you even though you had 18 in there last time. Whatever happens, we’ll get through it together.”
Katsuki sits across from him until Izuku’s breath is no longer catching over his cries, and the tears on his face have dried.
“Feeling better?”
Izuku smiles a little.
“Yes. Thank you, Kacchan.”
“Come on, let’s try and get some sleep before the shit show tomorrow. Wouldn’t want the Captiol to think we’re disrespecting them if we yawn during their favourite show or something…”
Izuku laughs.
“Yeah, we would never want the Capitol to think we don’t like them or anything.”
Kacchan smiles back at him and Izuku’s breath catches in his chest.
“There’s my stupid Deku.”
They sleep with their windows open.

LINK TO CHAPTER 1
They held hands for the entire walk home.
Kacchan doesn’t let Izuku hold his hand often. Too worried about the possible contamination of nitroglycerin to let his boyfriend take in the comfort of rubbing his fingers along the lines of his hands.
But today was different.
Only 18 hours until the reaping.
It was going to be Eri’s first reaping. Her little name on only one sheet of paper, thrown for the first time into the bowl of so many others.
‘Eri’s name is not going to be picked.’ Izuku just had to keep telling himself that. It was only one little slip of paper amongst thousands of others. It couldn’t be her name pulled out tomorrow. It just won’t be.
Izuku sighs, smiling gratefully up at Kacchan as he checks him on the hip.
For once, Katsuki had decided to join him when selling off the squirrels and crows that Izuku had managed to fell. They had both decided against going to the hob today - too worried about the reinforcements they had just seen making themselves known. So they had settled on knocking on the back doors of the line of shops and bakeries in town. At the very least, the main bakery’s owner was always willing to pay a few coins for a squirrel or two.
After selling what they could, Katsuki and Izuku walked over to their neighbourhood on the west side of District 12, strolling through the weathered streets shoulder to shoulder.
Katsuki and Izuku had always been neighbours.
Mitsuki has always been a seamstress, making an extra dime off of repairing old clothes and cutting new ones out of fabric brought to her by peacekeepers and richer folk in town. She’s recently been joined by her husband in her business after his knees got too bad to work in the mines any longer. Whilst Masaru could still move around, he was in a lot of pain when he did so it was good news for all of them when he received his dismissal from the mines.
In District 12, it was considered lucky to be dismissed from the mines due to health issues. Most people weren’t lucky enough to get to a dismissal before they passed.
All of Izuku’s clothes have been mended or made by Mitsuki and Masaru. The only thing left untouched by their work is his father’s leather jacket. Izuku could never bring himself to let them mend the cut his father had got in the sleeve before he passed.
As they approached their homes, Izuku could just about make out the silver head of hair bobbing in the long grass in front of their porch.
“We’re home!”
The head popped up out of the grass.
“Nii-san!”
Izuku opened his arms wide and braced himself for the girl barreling towards him. He would have fallen over if it wasn’t for the hand supporting his back.
With Eri safely snuggling into his chest, Izuku wrapped his arms around her and leaned down to nuzzle into her hair.
“Hey! Be more careful with your big brother.” Eri moved just enough to poke out a glare at Kacchan beside him.
“You should be more careful with him, Kacchan-nii.”
Even though Eri and Kacchan looked much more alike than Eri and Izuku did, they had never been able to get along as well with each other.
“Hey… Play nice.”
Eri huffed and turned her head back around to burrow into Izuku’s chest, placing her feet on Izuku’s shoes and letting him waddle them both closer to the house. Kacchan huffed back louder and said his goodbye to Izuku before heading into his house, leaving Eri and Izuku in their front garden alone.
“Did you have a good day at school, little bird?”
Eri tilted her head up to press her chin against his chest and smiled sweetly up at him.
She was still so small…
Bursting into conversation about her and her friends’ new band, Izuku and Eri wandered into their kitchen. Eri perched on her stool at the end of the counter and watched as Izuku gutted the squirrels he had kept for them. Their conversation only paused when Eri ran over to her room to collect the posters she and her friends had worked on that afternoon to advertise their show.
Bright, loud conversation flooded the kitchen much like the golden light filtering through the back windows onto the wooden counters. Swept up into their nightly routine, Eri placed the pan onto the stove and Izuku threw in the ingredients he had chopped up. Letting Eri season the stew as she saw fit, Izuku was happy to watch her as she stirred the herbs and spices into the bubbling pot.
Inko came in through the front door as Izuku and Eri were finishing up dinner, humming a tune that only they knew the notes to.
“I’m home!”
“Momma!”
After Inko had been appropriately attacked with Eri hugs, they all sat down to the freshly made stew at the little table in the corner. Inko pulled out the loaf of bread one of her patients had gifted her earlier, and they all dipped torn pieces into the broth of the stew as they ate.
Laughing around the dining table, it was almost strange to think that this might never happen again after tonight.
Izuku tried not to hold onto that thought for too long.
Their Momma refused to let either of them help with the washing up, ushering them up the stairs to get ready for bed instead. Izuku and Eri ran up the stairs together, both of them ready to put on their pyjamas and some warmer layers.
Izuku was pulling his jumper over his head when a knock came from the other side of his door.
“Come in!” Izuku sat down on the edge of his bed as Eri came through the doorway, her hands tied up in the edge of her jumper.
“Hey, Eri…” He tilted his head in an attempt to see Eri’s expression better, her hair hiding her face from his view. “What’s wrong?”
Eri comes to stand in front of him, her hands still tying knots in the edge of her jumper with her face tilted down past where Izuku could see it. Izuku frowns and reaches over to close the door quietly before covering Eri’s hands with his own and holding them gently.
“You can tell me anything, Eri.” Izuku speaks gently, sensing that something is about to break. “I won’t tell Mom if you don’t want me to either.”
Eri’s chest jerks as her breathing hitches.
“What if…” Her voice breaks off. “What is it’s me, Nii-san?”
“It’s not going to be you, Eri.” The words come out before Izuku can stop them. “Your name is only in there once, and my name is going to be on 28 slips of paper in there.”
When it came to opting in for a tessera for his family members, Izuku hadn’t had much of a choice. Before he could apply for them in his first reaping, they had just barely been surviving on what they could scramble together thanks to the Bakugous. With Izuku’s father no longer there to provide for them, and Inko not really having any options to earn from, it had been their only choice to put Izuku’s name in 3 times.
Even though he applied for the tesserae each year, he had never been reaped. Izuku even knew people with much larger families who had more slips in the bowl than him and not be reaped.
But when it came to Eri, Izuku hadn’t let her put her name in there any more than she had to. After this year, Izuku would be working in the mines and they would be able to afford spending on grain and oil instead of using the damn tesserae. Even if Eri had to put her name in twice one or two times, it would be a lot better for her than it had been for Izuku.
Letting go of one of Eri’s hands, Izuku brings his hand up to her cheek to brush away her tears instead. Eri leans into Izuku’s careful touch as she cries.
“Eri.” Eri looks up at his determined gaze. “I won’t let it be you. So it’s not going to happen.”
Eri trembles in his hold.
Izuku has had enough of this world. He draws Eri into his arms and holds her tight.
“Why don’t we draw in my notebook for a bit, and then you could go sleep in Mom’s bed tonight?” He feels Eri nod against his shoulder.
After Eri has calmed down a bit, they both settle on the floor of Izuku’s room and share the colouring pencils he keeps in his school bag between them.
They imagine scenes of a better world and colour them into the worn pages of Izuku’s notebooks.

A BKDK Hunger Games AU ch.3
LINK TO CHAPTER 1
After the peacekeepers had left, Izuku ran over to Kacchan with tears streaming down his face. There was blood pouring out the back of his head.
“Kacchan…”
Izuku remembered the feeling of the crown pulling in closer, drawn to the scene like moths to a flame. They were trapped and Kacchan was dying. What was he supposed to do?
“Move. Now.”
The loud barks of Mitsuki Bakugo had woken him up from his stupor enough to watch the hands of his mother and Kacchan’s parents manoeuvre him onto a stretcher and carry him away. Numb, Izuku had stumbled after them - too cold to feel the gentle hands of his little sister trying to comfort him.
Kacchan’s conscription had come in as soon as he was able to go back to school.
They had decided that since Katsuki refused to let his quirk be used for more important purposes, they would at least get the best use out of him they could in the mines. Kacchan now worked right in the depths of the mines. Helping excavate new routes to be used for the miners.
The peacekeepers worked him to the bone every single day. Izuku could only stand on the sidelines as Kacchan came back from work every day with a new callus or blister. Watch as Kacchan coughed the dark soot from the mines out of his lungs every night. The once cream handkerchief turning grey in his worn out hands.
Izuku sighs and runs his finger along the jagged scar on the back of Katsuki’s head.
“What’re you doing that for, nerd?”
“It still scares me, you know.” Izuku pulls back enough to be able to see Kacchan’s eyes. “That they almost took you from me that day.”
Kacchan hums and pushes Izuku’s hair back from his forehead and leans in to press a kiss to his hairline. “But they didn’t. ‘Cause I’m too awesome to get rid of that easily.”
Izuku closes his eyes and revels in the moment for a few seconds. Before his urge to ruin the moment becomes too strong to ignore.
“Yeah… You’re so awesome you can’t even stay up after 9pm.”
The gentle arms around him become constricting in a matter of moments.
“The fuck did you just say about me, Deku?”
Izuku sniggers.
“Nothing, Kacchan!”
“Liar.”
Kacchan’s fingers start prodding along Izuku’s side, stabbing into the soft skin along Izuku’s body.
“No! Stop!”
Scrambling to get out of his boyfriend’s grip, Izuku twists and turns until he’s facing away from the devil trying to grab him.
“Get back here, you little shit!”
Leaving all of his equipment behind him in his haste to escape, Izuku dashes away from Kacchan. They’re both laughing maniacally as they scramble through the forest they both know so well. Feet brushing along the edges of wild animals’ winding paths, snapping branches and twigs in their mad game of tag.
Jumping over a fallen tree, Izuku laughs when he hears Kacchan stumble behind him.
“Piece of shit tree!”
Izuku whips his head over his shoulder to check behind him. The stumble clearly hadn’t held his boyfriend up much. He grins.
“You okay, Kacchan? Can’t keep up?”
“Fucker! You know I can keep up with you fine.” Kacchan pants back.
“Prove it.”
A large explosion comes from behind him just before a solid chest is crashing into Izuku’s back. Kacchan’s arm circles his forehead just before they hit the ground.
“Oof.”
“Owww,” Izuku whines. “Kacchan…”
Kacchan pushes himself off of Izuku’s body just enough to hover over him.
“What? You asked me to catch you and I did it.” Kacchan sounds completely unapologetic, but his eyes rake over Izuku’s face when he turns over below him checking for any injuries. Katsuki cradles his face gently, tilting his head right and left to make sure he hasn’t missed anything.
“All you caught was a bunch of new bruises for me.” Izuku frowns up at his boyfriend, checking the other’s face for injuries too. “That hurt.”
The firm press of lips on his free cheek feels like an apology.
“Nah, it didn’t. I had a very soft landing.” Katsuki grins down at him, red eyes flickering with mirth.
Izuku pouts again. “Why do you have to be so mean to me?”
“Gotta keep up my image somehow, dickhead.” Izuku’s frown deepens.
“Kacchan…”
“What?” Kacchan pretends to not know what he’s done. “It’s a term of endearment!”
Izuku huffs out a laugh. “Yeah, sure.”
Katsuki pauses above him, his eyes narrowing as he thinks something through. He draws in closer, Izuku going cross-eyed as he tries to keep his glare fixed on his boyfriend.
“I’m glad you’re okay, Sweetness.”
Warm lips encapture Izuku’s and he melts into Kacchan’s hold, his arms coming up to wrap around Kacchan’s neck. If Izuku thought he was weak for Katsuki before he knew what his kisses felt like, Izuku no longer has a word to describe himself after finding out.
Izuku smiles into the kiss, and Kacchan gives up as it gets too awkward to continue. Choosing instead to pepper little kisses around Izuku’s face. Giggling, Izuku smiles up at his boyfriend as the assault comes to a close. He lowers his hands from the back of Kacchan’s neck and squishes his cheeks together, watching as his lips puff out into a pout as Izuku squidges his cheeks together.
Pleased by his boyfriend’s seldom pliancy, Izuku reaches up himself to press a kiss to the tip of Kacchan’s nose. Before letting go of his grip on his cheeks to kiss him again properly.
Soon enough, Katsuki is nipping at his lip and Izuku is opening up, letting Kacchan lick into his mouth. He shivers against the forest floor.
But when they both notice the approaching drone of a helicopter, they both freeze.
Katsuki pulls Izuku up onto his feet and they both rush under the cover of a nearby tree.
The peacekeepers for the reaping have finally arrived.

A BKDK Hunger Games AU ch.2
LINK TO CHAPTER 1
“Wait… Ew!” Kacchan’s hands freeze and slowly unwind from around him. “What the fuck is tied to your bag, Deku?”
“Noooo…” Izuku pouts, his arms left empty and wide open as his boyfriend retreats. “Hug me for longer!”
Kacchan grimaces down at his hands, staring at his unmarked palms as if they’re carrying something that could poison him.
“It’ll be fine!”
Izuku steps closer and Kacchan jumps back.
“Fuck no. Not until you take that shit off your back.”
Izuku huffs but still throws his quiver onto the ground, not caring that his arrows spill over the forest floor. He doesn’t care about that right now. He hasn’t seen Kacchan in a week! Izuku tries to approach Kacchan again, but is stopped by a hand held up to his face.
“Take your gross ass jacket off as well! I know that piece of shit has crap all over it.”
“It’s my dad’s jacket!” Izuku whines as he starts removing the offending jacket.
“Yeah, and? It’s still got bird blood all over it.”
When Kacchan’s hands twitch, Izuku can tell he wants to rip the leather jacket that Izuku is crumpling up into a ball out of his hands and fold it up nicely for him. But Izuku refuses to be out of Kacchan’s hold for any longer than he absolutely has to. So, he throws his jacket to the ground, hoping it falls on top of his quiver, and wraps his arms back around the boy before him.
“I’m cold now you’ve forced me to take my jacket off.” Izuku nestles into the crook of Katsuki’s neck. “Warm me up, Kacchan.”
“It is literally the middle of June.” Is what Kacchan says. But Izuku still feels his warm arms wrap dutifully around him.
Izuku sighs happily and relaxes into Kacchan’s grasp.
Things have been different ever since Kacchan got his conscription to work in the mines early.
All boys in District 12 get conscripted at age 18 to go and work in the coal mines. Kacchan had turned 18 this April, but he had been working in the mines for nearly two years now.
All because of his quirk.
It was at moments like this that Izuku was quite glad that he was quirkless.
But Kacchan got an amazing quirk.
Explosions.
Ever since he got it, everyone has heralded him for having such a powerful quirk despite being born in District 12. Most people here had no quirks. So it was unusual for someone to have a quirk at all, nevermind a powerful one.
At first, they had wanted Katsuki to be a peacekeeper.
The head peacekeeper had come to see him one day after school when they were thirteen. They had been looking through the quirk registry and thought that Katsuki had the potential to be a great peacekeeper. Maybe one day even get sent to the academy in district 2 to learn. It was a huge opportunity.
Kacchan told them to get lost - he didn’t want to be a part of the regime that oppressed them.
But they were insistent.
Every day for about a year, a peacekeeper would walk Kacchan back home from school. Izuku would watch from behind as the peacekeeper leered over Kacchan and tried to tempt him. Promises of power, money and food dangled in front of him. When they realised that Izuku and Katsuki were close, they even tried to promise better treatment for Izuku and his family to try and tempt Kacchan into falling into line.
But like a rooted tree in a storm, Kacchan never halted his dismissal. Quite a few peacekeepers ended up with unwanted hair trims due to Kacchans explosive temper.
Soon enough, the peacekeepers' praise was turning into disdain.
It all changed when they figured out that a bit of fire resistant gear would keep them from getting singed. They started to irritate him on purpose just to watch him explode. Whisper taunts in his ear about the power they held over him even with his quirk. Joke about harming his family and friends because he refused to join them. Kacchan would go wild as they laughed at him over the sound of his explosions.
Izuku still remembers the chill that ran through him when someone told him Katsuki had been taken to the town square.
He had run over to the town centre from school, and clawed his way to the front of the crowd that had enclosed the scene.
“Kacchan!”
Kacchan wasn’t moving.
They had locked up his hands in cylinders of metal that were now glowing a dull red where they laid chained to the ground next to his head. The peacekeeper standing next to him ground his boot down onto the side of Katsuki’s head, smearing dirt onto his puffy cheek. Izuku looked on as Kacchan blinked drowsily, crimson eyes staring out into nothing. Two clean tracks trailed down his cheeks, twining along the curve of the dog’s muzzle they had fitted onto his face.
They had broken him.
They had broken his Kacchan.
A peacekeeper dragged a pipe along the ground as he made his way over to Kacchan, a sadistic smile spread across his face. The grate of metal across concrete made Izuku snap.
He looked away.
Kacchan screamed.

A BKDK Hunger Games AU ch.1
Birdsongs whisper throughout the trees, wound through the branches by the wind that carries them. Sunlight filters down through the leaves above. Ferns reach up to lick at the dapples of sunlight splayed across them. And bugs munch at the renewed green of their leaves. Rustles of fur and feathers echo in the footprints are left behind in the soft dirt. Soon to be covered up by layers of broken branches and leaves.
Freedom.
That’s what this space means to him.
And yet underneath all of this beauty, the constant, discordant hum of the electric fence can be made out.
The nature here doesn’t know it’s unnatural anymore. For 75 years, it has never known anything different. Baby birds have been learnt not to perch on it, little foxes have been learnt not to scratch at it and the plants have learnt how to grow around it.
But, Izuku? He’s learnt how to get through it.
Letting the metal netting slingshot back into its rightful position, Izuku stands up on the other side of the fence and races towards the line of trees in front of him. The sooner he gets out of sight, the better. He heads towards the place he stores his hunting equipment, greeting the forest like an old friend.
This is where he belongs.
He’s been coming here since he was a child. As soon as he had learnt to walk, his father was teaching him how to slip through the loose panel at the edge of the meadows and into the thicket of wildlife lining the east length of his district 12.
Izuku pulls out his bow from underneath the fallen tree he keeps it beneath and traipses over to reach for his arrows inside the hollow tree to the left. He slings the quiver around his body, movements easy with years of practice. Smiling, Izuku runs his fingers over the name ‘Midoriya’ carved into its lean body.
It was passed down to him by his father.
A rustle comes from up above in the trees.
Izuku flicks an arrow over his shoulder and onto his bow, pulling the string back as his eyes search for the animal that made the noise. The black head of a crow peaks out from in between the trees. He shoots.
It falls.
Izuku is quick to make his way over to the felled bird before any other predator becomes brave enough to try and steal his game. He pulls his arrow out of the eye it had pierced, wiping it on a cloth quickly and placing it back inside his quiver. He ties the crow to his quiver’s strap by the head, wrapping a noose around its limp head. It won’t get him that much, but it was still a sizable bird. Good enough to trade for a few potatoes at the Hob.
After his father went, Izuku was the one who had to provide for his family.
His mother makes a few pennies from making herbal remedies for illnesses and stitching up wounds. But when everyone in the District is as poor as each other, not much can be made off of helping their neighbours.
Eri, his sister, is still too young to help provide for the family. The most she can do is be a spare pair of hands when his mother is treating someone. She’s training to be a medic under his mother. Izuku admires her for it, his hands have never been gentle or disciplined enough to help his mother.
His foraging skills are enough to give them what they need. With his bow, Izuku has the power to keep his family well fed and cared for. The peacekeepers loitering around the Hob are always happy to trade a few coins for some proper meat. And if not, Auntie Sosaki is always willing to take any less wanted prey off of his hands for her cats to eat.
Izuku continues deeper into the forest, eyes constantly seeking movement in the bushes around him. He manages to fell a couple of squirrels before his eyes land on her.
A doe stands a few metres away from him, a soft brown head peeking out from in between two trees.
Izuku stills, and slowly reaches for his bow.
One eye focused on the deer, he squints the other one shut as he raises his hand back to touch his cheek.
He only has one shot for this.
The doe shuffles to the right slightly, head bowing down to munch on a shrub. Izuku’s eyes follow, carefully shifting until his arrow points straight at her chest.
Arms wrap around him.
“BOOM!”
Izuku shrieks.
His arrow flies off somewhere towards the doe’s behind and Izuku spins himself around as his nose finally takes in the sickly sweet smell of nitroglycerin.
“Kacchan!” He smacks his hands on the shoulders of the boy who had snuck up behind him, forcing the arms wrapped around his middle to let go.
What did Izuku do to deserve this?
“Really Deku?” He raises an eyebrow and smirks, “A deer is more important than me?”
Izuku growls.
There are never any deer here!
The money he could have gotten from that kill would have lasted his family about a fortnight! He had one shot and Kacchan blew it for him.
“You ass!”
A couple years ago, Izuku would have been too scared to swear at Kacchan. But now all he can see is the glint of amusement in his eyes. “That kill could have lasted us two weeks! And you blew it!”
Izuku punches his boyfriend in the stomach.
“Ow!” Kacchan snarls, “What the fuck, Deku? I thought you would be happy to finally see me after--”
Kacchan’s tantrum is cut off when all of the air is punched out of him as Izuku bulldozes into his chest and throws his arms around the boy in front of him. Izuku holds him tight and buries his nose into the familiar smelling fabric of Kacchan’s shirt.
“You’re such an asshole, Kacchan.”
Kacchan scoffs before wrapping his arms around Izuku and nuzzling into the green hair beneath his nose. “Stupid nerd…”
Lips press into the crown of his head and Izuku grins.
