Janie Mackenzie was asleep in her trailer when she awoke to the sound of her dog barking, a telltale sign her two young step-grandchildren were out playing on a swingset in the backyard. She said she heard Lilly and Jack Sullivan's voices. Her bedroom is only a few steps away. "After that, I heard nothing," said Mackenzie of the morning of May 2, when the two children disappeared from the property in Lansdowne Station, a sparsely populated community in Nova Scotia's Pictou County.

Pictured: searchers find the abandoned tent belonging to nine lost hikers in Russia's Ural Mountains, 26th February 1959.
The Dyatlov Pass Incident: A Chilling Mystery
In late January of 1959, ten hikers led by 23-year-old Igor Dyatlov set out to trek through Russia’s remote Ural Mountains. One member turned back early due to an injury, leaving nine to trudge on into the snowy abyss. When the group failed to return home on schedule, a rescue mission was launched, but the search ended in tragedy and mystery.
On 26th February, the search team found a tent abandoned and cut open from the inside, as though its occupants had fled in a panic. Nearby, the bodies of five hikers were discovered in various states of undress, suggesting hypothermia. Due to treacherous weather conditions, the remaining four hikers were found later in the year on May 4th, buried under 13 feet of snow. A closer inspection of the deceased is where this case takes a more alarming turn.
Some of the bodies bore gruesome and inexplicable injuries, ranging from fractured skulls, broken ribs, and in one case, missing eyes and tongue. Theories about the cause of the injuries have circulated, with the most plausible explanation being the group fell victim to an avalanche and foraging wild animals. However, several factors have cast doubt over this theory, including the sporadic placement and partially dressed state of the bodies, as well as the fact their tent and belongings were not buried in any recently displaced snow.
More sinister suggestions have ranged from murder to military experiments, and even alien encounters. Sadly, despite much speculation, the truth about what really happened remains unknown 66 years later, cementing the Dyatlov Pass incident as one of history's most enduring mysteries.
A longer and more detailed post about this case can be read here.

•Disappearance of Jodi Huisentruit•
Jodi Sue Huisentruit (June 15, 1968) was an American TV news anchor for KIMT in Mason City, Iowa. Jodi went missing early in the morning on June 27, 1995 after she was telling a colleague she was on her way to work.
At 4 a.m. on June 27, 1995, KIMT producer Amy Kuns noticed that Jodi has not reported to work at her scheduled time since that is the time slot she works. Amy called Jodi and Jodi answered by saying that she had overslept and was preparing to leave. By 6 a.m. she still hasn’t shown up. When police arrived at her apartment, they found her red Mazda in the parking lot and noticed that a struggle was involved to get in the car. Her personal items, including a bent key around the area and a unidentified palm print from her car.
Investigators interviewed three neighbors in Jodi’s apartment who said that they had heard screams at about the time that she would have been leaving for work. One neighbor has said that he saw a white van parked at the same time Jodi was leaving but it was never identified. Police have conducted more than 1,000 interviews but none has lead to a suspect and they pronounced Jodi legally dead in May 2001.

1989 New Hampshire Jane Doe Identified
Remains found in Warwick, Massachusetts in 1989 have finally been identified as belonging to Constance Bassignani, who went missing in 1989 at the age of 65. The Northwestern District Attorney's Office announced the identification on Thursday.
On June 24, 1989, Bassignani's dismembered remains were discovered by a driver on Route 78 in the small town of Warwick, near the New Hampshire border. The medical examiner determined she had been murdered.
At the time of her disappearance, Bassignani was living with her second husband, William Bassignani, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Her grandchildren reported last seeing or hearing from her over Memorial Day weekend in 1989. William claimed to the family that Constance had decided to move back to her native Hawaii and they would not hear from her again. However, investigators found no evidence she ever went to Hawaii.
William Bassignani, who died in 1993, is considered a person of interest in his wife's murder, although there is currently insufficient evidence to name him an official suspect. Investigators are still trying to determine why her remains were disposed of in the remote town of Warwick, about 80 miles from where the couple lived.
The case had gone cold for over 30 years until advanced forensic techniques in 2024 allowed identification of the remains. The motive and location of the murder are still unknown, and authorities are seeking any information from the public.

Christopher Duett, Producer and Host of the Criminal Perspective Podcast, wrote that off all the inmates he have corresponded with, Barry Loukaitis is the only one whom he considers a "friend". He also tweeted he used to love talking with him as he is extremely intelligent and self-deprecating.
Barry wrote him that he's fantasized about going back in time, trying to reason with his younger self. "Also, cliché but true; I needed a role model."
