Review of GCL Activities in FY2014
1. Overall review of GCL activities in FY2014
The GCL program has given me the opportunity of studying informatics, especially medical informatics. This prompted me to conduct research with a fusion of nursing and ICT, collaborating with the Department of Ubiquitous Health Informatics, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo. Thanks to GCL program, I have dreams of promoting people’s health and solving problems in healthcare using ICT. I could broaden my views through talking with students and GCL instructors and hearing about researches in various fields.
2. Records of GCL education programs in FY2014
2-1. GCL courses
Information Systems
ICT as a researching approach for Social Issues
2-2. Global Design Tech-Talk
Global Design Lecture & Seminar: “Nursing and Elderly people” and “Introduction to research activities in NTT laboratories towards the next stage”
Global Design Symposium “My Number and Big Data”
2-3. Internship
Internship in Japan: Applied immunity
Internship abroad: Planning

Social Issues and the Research
Diabetes is one of the chronic diseases which leads to high glucose levels in the blood. Although high blood glucose levels don’t cause deaths directly, maintaining high glucose levels for some years causes complications, which mean serious diseases affecting heart, eyes, kidneys, brain, and so on. All of these complications decrease patient quality of life and increase healthcare expenditures. Additionally, the number of patients with diabetes has continued to increase in the aging society in Japan.
The goal of treatment for diabetes is keeping blood glucose levels under the control. The basis of glycemic control is diet and exercise therapy. However, it is difficult for patients to change their lifestyles and maintain desirable behavior and good glycemic control.
What can we do to support these patients? I focus on potentiality of ICT which can overcome time and location barriers in traditional face-to-face support.
