I've been thinking about semblances and what they show us about the characters. Many of them are straightforward: Blake had a tendency to run, Yang uses beatdowns in her life to motivate her to be stronger and doesn't show that she feels every inch of the pain, etc.

And then there's Ruby. The way the show approaches her semblance is unique and so fascinating. Ruby has the ability to break herself down into tiny pieces, which allows her to bear a lot of weight and make it through and past things she otherwise couldn't. Gee, I wonder what that might represent. Ruby, the queen of giving up pieces of herself in order to bear the weight others struggle to hold: having a semblance where she molecularly breaks herself down and it allows her to carry her entire team at once. Then there's the fact that she turns into Rose petals, when all she's wanted all her life was to be like her Mother, Summer Rose. And in trying to do that, she also breaks herself apart and tries to rearrange the pieces to fit.

All of that makes sense, but what I adore about the writing in this show is the fact that Ruby didn't know this was her semblance until Volume 8. Up until Ruby's breaking point, every single person thought Ruby had a speed semblance. She was enthusiastic and energetic, why wouldn't she?

Surely there's no need to look any further. Ruby doesn't get weighed down despite all the struggles. She's such a good leader. She's totally fine. She just has a speed semblance, and nothing more to it. There's nothing wrong with how she has been handling everything that is happening.

Just like how no one truly saw past her mask throughout all the series, no one thought to look deeper into her semblance either. Not even Ruby understood her semblance or all that she was doing to herself.

The only one who did? Who saw Ruby as she was? Who also figured out what she does? Penny.

Anyway, astounded by the depth to this show. Despite its flaws, it is a work of passion, and it shows.

As soon as it closed rapunzel slumped in relief and passed the mug she’d poured down the bar to Vlad who she knew liked the stuff but he seemed too exhausterd to be interested so he passed it down further to Shorty who seemed quite pleased. Hook Hand feared the guard might linger in hopes of them slipping up so he asked Rapunzel how her journey had been. Big Nose chimed in “Yes Rapunzel, di you have a good time?” She shook herself a littel and said “yes, I did . I met this kid with a nation for inventing and science. He and his father were quite remarkable” After about an hour of circling conversation they sent Ulf and Shorty outside to examine the area for any sign of guards. When they returned and the coast was clear Hook Hand gave a good puck to the duck tab and the trap door opened. Rapunzel had never really seen it opened she didtn realize how dark it would be until Flynn and then Lance emerged from the darkness, sweaty adn shaken. She hugged them both fiercly and brought them to the small kitchen to of view and made them each a generous omlet. Attila came in and sat down with them. He didn’t speak often but he told them they would have to steer clear for a few months if they were actively wanted. Rapunzel saw them off with a little extra coin and then went to her room to cry.

Big Nose knocked on her door that evening. “Are you alright rapunzel? I know that was very frightening but you handled yourself very well I hope you know”. She gave him a hug and told him how frightened she was for them. “I understand” he said. “But as silly as they can be, those are some smart resourceful boys. They should be back here in a couple months just like always”. She sniffed and agreed.

The next few months went on as usual. She poured and served up drinks sometimes as many as 13 at one time. She helped cook and wiping counters and entertaining on guitar or piano and singing. But she was nervous. And as the months passed her nerves turned to worry and worry to anxiety. She visited Varian in Old Corona every other month or so and even made a trip all the way to and from the Capitol to buy some more books with a borrowed horse. She bought a pretty violet skirt and some light rosey twill to modify her old dress. It wasn’t until her birthday came around again that she finally reunited with Lance and Flynn. They arrived on horseback with an extra party member. A fetching young woman, Stalyon as it turns out, Flynn’s fiancé. The boys had hidden out in the city of Vardaros for the past months and Flynn and Stalyon had, it seemed, become closer than ever. But now they were here. For her. To take her once again to see the lanterns for her birthday. She was much too happy to see her friends to think for a second to be jealous of Stalyon. She wasn’t exactly nice but she didn’t seem to dislike Rapunzel and even chatted with her occasionally. They just didn’t seem to have a whole lot in common. Her boys had grown into young men while they were gone. Lance was almost twice the size he was before and while Flynn didn’t seem to be more than an inch or two taller he had filled out and become remarkably handsome. He and Stalyon made a very attractive pair she noticed. Traded off riding with each member of the party on their way to Corona Village. It was a little embarrassing but also comforting in its way. They stopped every hour to trade off. First with Lance then Stalyon then Flynn and then Flynn joined Stalyon and she had a horse to herself for the last leg of the journey. Rapunzel had a realization that it might be time to save her coin to buy her own horse.

When she arrives back to the snuggly duckling the first thing she sees is a royal gurad dismounting from a large white horse. While she personally had no problem with the royal guardsmen she knew her loyal customers didn’t exactly share the sentiment. She considered for a moment hiding and observing before quickly deciding to take a more direct approach. She greeted the Captain with her signature award charm and asked if she could help him. She was told he was seeking a fugitive who was said to frequent this bar. “I actually work here most days. Perhaps I will be able to tell you if i’ve seen this person around lately. Do you have a name?” “He is currently going under the name Lance Strongbow. Does the sound familiar?” “Im afraid not . Ive never served anyone by that name” The horse trained a faerce look on her then and started aggressively sniffing. She felt unbelievably nervous but stood firm.If it was indeed an alias then she really didn’t know anyone with that name anyway. The guard looked at his horse and then back to her. “Thank you miss for your time. We’ll just take a quick look inside and then we’ll be on our way” “That sounds lovely” she strained out. “Let me introduce you to my employer” She knocked thrice in quick succession before rattling the door handle up and down and openig the door. She could only hope everyone would be on their besrt behavior when the door ws open. “Vlad, I have someone here to see you” she called across the room “He’s looking for a Lance! You don’t know anyone by that name, do you?” The guard and his horse followed in behind her. Both looking incredibly suspicious and unnerved. She decided the best she could do was leave the situation to the adults and not act too suspicious herself. She turned her attention to the horse. “Hello” she whispered to the horse. “im Rapunzel. I’t nice to meet you. Whts your name?” She saw the name on his harness “Maximus? You seem like a smart boy. There’s no Lance here is there? Is there?” She pet his neck nd face and his tail wagged a little before he fond his focus and stiffened up. He trailed his master to the counter of the bar and sniffed the surface until he got to the beer tabs. Rapunzel came up behind the bar and started placign her hand on each handle before settling on the middle, the strongest smellign they had and pouring a generous mug. Max confused looked around before the Captain said “Alright Max, we’re don here. Let’s go.” Max stood at attention before followinf the guard out the door.

She tells everyone all about her adventure and how thrilled she was about it. She shows off her new outfit and reads her books and serves drinks and cooks large portions of food to serve. The pub thugs come and go and she embroiders small designs on her clothes and bag. She makes small gifts for her friends and regulars. The next time Lance sees her he passes on a pair of thin leather gloves he’s recently outgrown. Sometimes Punzie’s thoughts stray to Flynn but then she reminds herself that he’s still with a girl. Her days become a little repetative but never lonely and the thugs frequently came in with new stories.

A few months after she turns 16 Rapunzel proposes that she’d like to go on her own adventure to Vlad and Attila. She decides to pick the simple destination of Old Corona to go and visit. When she gets there she finds a lovely farming town who’s greatest threat seems to be a 12 year old with slightly large scientific ambitions. She talks to Varian and his father and learns about Varian’s ideas and goals and Quirin’s job and values. Rapunzel tells Varian everything she’s read about geology and other natural sciences and he explains the metal working skills he’s been developing and she explains to him the precision of baking and he explains his theory of hot running water. Quirin seems pleased his son is distracted for once. When Rapunzel isn’t with Varian she’s peppering the other villagers with questions about what they do and how they farm. After three nights in the village she repacks her small bag and says goodbye to Varian.

Flynn occasionally comes around and is always surprised by her. It’s Lance that talks to her first though. She brings him a drink he requests and the two start chatting. She sits with him and he tells her about his adventures, being as self aggrandizing as possible and chuckles at Rapunzel’s wide-eyed fascination. After two or three days of this Flynn finally joins them and starts telling his stories. He’s dating this cool girl Stalyan and works for her dad. Rapunzel tells them about her dream to see the lost princess’ lanterns. Flynn and Lance go back to their adventures and Rapunzel starts mixing paints. She starts in her room but after about two months of that she starts expanding. First to little corners of the tavern and then to the back outer wall. Vladimir laughs and tell her to make sure to include a unicorn. Gunther provides input to help make the paintings cohesive with his design aesthetic.

The year passes and Flynn and Lance return in time to offer to escort Rapunzel to Corona Village. Vlad threatens to skin them alive if they don’t have her safely returned within the week and they sweat and promise and Rapunzel laughs. Atilla instructs her to bring a portion of her saved wages to buy whatever she liked on her first visit to the capitol. They spend one night on the road and arrive after a day and a half of travel. It’s breathtaking and Rapunzel has to see everything. She has learned to style it but a group of little girls still braid it up like in the film. The kingdom dance scene is basically the same except switch Lance in for the horse lol. They walk through the market and Raps spends hours in a bookstore. And she buys a beautiful satchel and emboidery materials and paint pigments and as many books as she can carry. Then it’s her birthday. And she never mentioned it until the day of and Flynn and Lance are stunned and maybe a seed of thought is planted but the three of them are young and silly and they each buy a lantern for a coin and they bring them down to the water and stand in the crowd and watch the lanterns fill the sky. Rapunzel once more bursts into tears and there are consoling murmurs from the crowd and she’s not the only one. It may be a hopeful celebration but it’s also the anniversary of a tragedy. Lance and Flynn freak out a little but they hug Rapunzel and she marvels at the beauty of the lights filling the sky. They return to their room after most have already gone home but Raps insists on waiting till most of the lanterns have disapeard. The next day is their last in town so Rapunzel insists they go visit the castle. Rapunzel bumps into a dark haired girl in a maid’s uniform. They share a long moment of eye contact before Rapunzel starts to prefucely apologize and the maid fixes her focus on her duties and takes her leave. Flynn says he has rome errands to run so he leaves Rapunzel to explore with Lance for a while. When they meet back up for late lunch Flynn has an extra parcel but they have to get on the road before night fall so they organize their belongings and make their way off the island and back onto the forest path. When they set up camp for the night Flynn presents the parcel to Rapunzel and wishes her a happy birthday. Flynn bought her a pretty but simple lavender dress and a plum corset(see art). Rapunzel is touched by the gift and perhaps begins to form a real crush on Flynn. The three arrive back at the tavern the next afternoon to the relief of the pub thugs.

(Let’s say in this canon Eugene is only 2 years older than her. Lance is equally aged down.) Im not really writing about Pascal but assume he’s there providing an appropriate amount of emotional support and contributing to her aesthetic.

She leaves in the night with Pascal days after her birthday when Gothel is older looking and frightens her. Lashes out like a kid running from home but gets lost and so doesn’t return. Her hair is intensely long and she stumbles upon the snuggly duckling. She bursts into tears while Pascal clings to her when she sees the sign. Ulf and Big Nose hear the crying and go to see what’s going on and there’s a child with an enormous amount of hair crying on the grass. They go comfort her and she’s frightened but Big Nose’s earnestness and Ulf’s miming get her to start laughing. Picture then essentially I’ve got a Dream. They all realize that the floating lights won’t be back for almost a year and Raps bursts back into tears realizing she has no where to go. Attila menaces in .. and suggests she work in the pub in exchange for room and board. Shortie says something kind but also kinda creepy that goes fully over Punzies head. Bruiser cuffs Shortie on the head and the momentum continues. Then Flynn runs in with Lance yelling about a heist they ran on the Baron and making a racket to the annoyance of the pub thugs. Raps is in awe seeing ppl around her age for the first time. She starts blushing and the pub thugs laugh and Flynn notices Punzie and trips because what is a little girl doing here? Lance laughs at Flynn and the two go elsewhere.

Over the next two weeks Atilla, Vlad, and Gunther show her the ropes of serving drinks in the tavern. She stuns them all with her sleeper build level arm strength and she accidentally bullys Vlad into adding more menu items that she helps prepare. She has a little room in the back of the tavern and she collects little bouquets of flowers and makes candles and finds a guitar in some dusty corner that she plays for the raven sometimes. Hookhand teaches her some piano and they play and sing together sometimes. And sometimes the pub thugs will bring her little knick knacks from their adventures like single earrings or twine bracelets, maybe even bits of fabric. And then they discover her passion for books. Theres 3 or 4 she recites front to back from memory and they applaud her skills. They bring her more books when they find them and she collects piles of them. Sometimes she leaves them sprawled out on the bar. Fiction is interesting but any information about the real world is 10 times better.

consider: Rumi can now see in the dark

she got into the habit of not turning on the lights anymore once the sun goes down because it's not necessary for her anymore. everything looks relatively the same in the light or the dark

it's an inconvenience for Zoey and Mira. Rumi already hardly makes any noise, vocally or physically; you'd see her before you heard her, and if you didn't see her, she would end up scaring the shit out of you when she finally spoke and you had no idea she was there. and calling her name isn't the foolproof solution, because if she's wearing noise-cancelling headphones with music blasting then she won't hear

but now the light that allowed them to see Rumi is gone. nighttime in the penthouse, if she's not with them in the living room or in her own room, she could be literally anywhere and they'd have no clue because Rumi leaves all the lights off even if she's sitting in that room. and she's not constantly glowing, either

her one demon eye reflects light the way a cat's does at night so imagine walking into the pitch-black kitchen and seeing one singular reflective eye looking back at you and then you flick on the lights and it's Rumi making a late night cup of ramyeon
