An Interstellar Favor
Summary: Dedede rarely has to consider the fate of those outside his own kingdom, let alone those not on Popstar. But Meta Knight calls with a strange proposition.
1114 words
---
A lazy sunset drifted past the roof of the castle. King Dedede rested his cheek in his hand and gazed up at the streaks of orange and pinks. Heh, pink. He turned his attention back to the citizen rambling about something or another. In the corner, Scribe Dee scribbled furiously.
Dedede would get around to actually addressing this citizen’s problem later, when he wasn’t so tired and dinner wasn’t calling his name. Accepting the eager Waddle Dee’s offer to learn transcription had paid off big-time. Delegation and all that! Dedede was getting better at this ‘politician’ thing every day.
“Thank you, that will be all.” He waved the citizen, a wayward cappy, away when she was done speaking. “Your concerns are, ahem, very important to us.”
The cappy perked up and smiled. Dedede flashed a kingly grin back, and off they went. When he heard her hopping down the stairs he gestured for the guards to shut the doors to the throne room.
“Phew! Long day, huh?” Dedede slid off his throne and stretched.
Scribe Dee finished scribbling before replying, “went fast!”
“Sure. A’course.” Dedede shrugged. “But now I’m hungry! Time for dinne-”
The phone rang. The big phone, with a handle and cord and everything, the one he had gold-plated and placed on its own pedestal in his hall. His pulse spiked, some of his feathers standing on end, but rapidly-approaching too was the end of his patience.
Dedede stalked over to the phone and snapped “WHO IS IT!”
“Your highness.”
Dedede recognized the dry irritation in an instant. “Oh! Meta Knight! Why’re you callin’ so late?”
“It is 18:23 Popstar standard time.”
“Hey, I was workin’ late!” Dedede snapped. “Now you’d best explain what’s going on before I start gettin’ nervous.”
“It’s not an emergency.” Meta Knight said quickly.
“Then why’d you call? Couldn’t this have waited? Not afraid to show your face ‘round the castle, are you? Why, I could have you for breakfast tomorrow. Sound good?”
“I know I am welcome, your highness.” Meta was still with the ‘your highness’ talk, so something was up. “If I call this an emergency, will you deal with it now?”
Dedede frowned and leaned against the pedestal the phone was on. “Say what now?”
Meta Knight must’ve finally picked up on his turn of phrase, because instead of repeating himself he now began to elaborate. “My ship has received an extraterrestrial transmission.”
“Huh?”
“A radio signal of alien origin. From another planet.”
“Oh, right! Which one? Ripple star? Don’t say- Halcandra?”
“Neither. And that is the concern.”
“They declarin’ a war?”
“No- no, it is simply-” Meta Knight paused and mumbled something under his mask. Dedede could hear the way his breath hit the metal through the phone. “Do you recall the reason I had you pass the law limiting satellite television and radio broadcasts?”
“Mhmm.” Dedede shrugged. “Was a little annoying having to lay the cable everywhere.”
“It is because we do not want to draw the attention of those who may be listening.”
“Yeah, out there. All of those types.” He really didn’t need to list all the names here. They both knew.
“Exactly.”
“So this planet, these neighbors of ours, they’re being too loud.”
“They aren’t our neighbors.”
Meta Knight paused. Dedede waited for him to continue.
“Their broadcasts are. . . primitive. They are clearly not space-faring, nor magic-aware.” Something edged in the Knight’s voice. Something Dedede struggled to put his finger on.
“Vulnrable?” Dedede suggested.
“Vulnerable. Yes.” Meta Knight corrected, then concurred.
“What are you proposin’ we do about it?”
“It would be a risk. I cannot ask it of you- of Popstar -without informing you of the threat it could pose to us.”
“You’re not hoping to get Floralia’s seal of approval for this, are you?”
“No. I am trusting the decision to you.”
The phone slipped out of Dedede’s fingers. He hit it around in the air a few times with his mitts before catching hold of the handle again.
He turned his head away from the receiver until his breathing slowed again. “You sure?”
“You know I am no flatterer. You are the leader of Dreamland.”
Actually hearing him say that out loud still felt surreal given their history.
Dedede refocused. “You know, you still haven’t told me your proposed solution.”
A small “hmm” from the other end of the line. “I propose we send a signal back to them.”
“Ah. That’d be the risk part. A big ol’ broadcast to reach them would be loud, right?”
“Exactly.”
“And what’d we tell ‘em? ‘Keep it down’?”
“Something like that.”
“Well, I’m trustin’ you to write the specifics,” Dedede replied. Delegation, and a good bit at that. “Unless you want the royal sign-off in there.”
“Simpler may be best. I have been decoding their language as best I can, but I cannot guarantee my translation is completely accurate.”
“I’ll leave ya’ to it then. You got the transmitter on the old ‘Berd running that powerful?”
“We may have to land to divert enough power.”
“You can cipher a little something from my castle if you need.” Dedede offered.
“Power siphon! Excellent idea. Thank you. We will dock tomorrow.”
“When-?” Dedede tried to ask, only for Meta Knight to hang up.
Dedede shook his head and hung up the phone in return. He walked a few feet before catching a passing Waddle Dee.
A quick “Hey! You there!” was enough to catch the little feller’s attention. Then he softened his tone. “Could’ya tell the tech guys to prepare for the Halberd? We’re gonna transfer some power to them tomorrow.”
The Dee gave a “Yessir!” and a quick “Wanya!” before scurrying off.
“And you!” Dedede whirled around to another passing Dee. “Tell the kitchen we might have guests tomorrow morning.”
(Early morning, if Meta Knight had his way.)
“How many?” The Dee asked.
“Uh. Meta Knight and his senior guys?” Hopefully no more than that. Meta Knight was usually polite like that but no telling when he had his mind set on something like this.
“Wanya!” With a quick salute, the other ran off.
Dedede stopped where he was and rubbed his face. What a day. He yawned, and his stomach grumbled. He still hadn’t had dinner yet!
Those not-neighbors best be grateful for what they were getting. They would have no idea the trouble they were getting themselves into if they didn’t.
(Just like he’d had no idea when he first declared himself the king; no idea before Kirby, no idea before Meta Knight, not a single idea at all.)
(He tried not to think about a Kirby-less and Meta Knight-less planet, broadcasting all alone in the dark without a darned clue.)

(In Watsonian terms,) maybe we could treat Dedede always getting possessed like. . . a disability metaphor?
He's weak-minded. He knows he's weak-minded. Every time it happens he's left staring at the same brick wall separating him from his body and he screams and kicks and yells at it. It never comes down. He. . . knows that Kirby will be on the way. That dependency used to bother him a lot but he's come to rely on it now. Almost comforting.
Kirby has the willpower to shatter gods, Meta Knight is. . . somewhere up there also. And good ol' King Dedede, down at the bottom, always getting possessed. The usual. Oh joy.
At least Kirby's gotten better at pulling his punches. Dedede will bear the pain and wait for his friends to help bail him out. Then maybe later he can make up for it by tossing his hammer around, sure. He'll keep telling himself that.
(He does not understand that the Waddle Dees like him for his kingmanship, that Meta Knight respects him for his growth, and that Kirby will be his friend no matter what, all regardless of the strength of his will.)

What is GSA week?
GSA week is a fandom event lasting 7 days dedicated to making fanworks related to the Hoshi no Kaabi/Kirby Right Back at Ya anime, more specifically about the sideplot of star warriors and GSA lore part of it. It allows creators to showcase their interpretations, headcanons and original works to celebrate. There are two prompts for each day to chose, combine or do both. You can skip days or chose to do only one day based on what prompt you like, the goal is to have fun and interpret it in your own way.
What counts as GSA/star warrior?
Main characters like Kirby and Meta Knight, background characters such as Meta Knight's star warrior troop, Knuckle Joe's father, Garlude, the four GSA generals, and a character you may headcanon to have joined it like Sirica and Knuckle Joe. Ocs are allowed if they are related to your own interpretation and lore of the GSA.
How does it work?
When the week starts you post a fanwork related to the prompt of that day. There is no deadline and you're allowed to post late but not earlier than the start of the project (wait til the 6th to begin posting!). It needs to be tagged as #GSAweek2025 to count as you joining the event

You know that writing prompt post that was about "when you kill someone, you get their best attribute, but only what the person you killed considered to be their own best attribute."
I'm thinking about that and Kirby's copy ability. Kirby inhales an enemy that wields fire only to get a Dance ability. Kirby inhales a chef and gets the Suplex ability. Kirby inhales a dude carrying a sword only to become the best lawyer in all of Dreamland. Kirby has questions, but he will get no answers.

Trascription: "I also think kirby would adore hornet. he'd see a lot of his own mentor in her after all! both nimble speedster fighters and devoted warriors, both stern and stoic and mysterious swordsfolk"
Prev, you are so damn correct. Also, Meta Knight and Hornet would get along like a house on fire actually. They meet and both universes combust from the sheer badassery. They look at each other and go "Finally, someone is taking this as seriously as I am!"
Not very many protagonists could swap roles with Kirby without getting smited, but I'll stand firm that one of them is Ghost (The Knight) from Hollow Knight. They feel like the same kind of funky critter to me. Kirby games typically start easy, which would allow Ghost to start gathering items and scaling way easier. When it's time to Fight the Evil Mind Control God that's haunting this soft post apocalypse, they got this in the bag. (Plus they're shockingly good at making friends, meaning that they definitely won't have to fight alone- Meta Knight at least would love to spar with them!)
Kirby, meanwhile as we all know, solos the Radiance easily, since he is Also Void (don't worry about it) and the Seer would absolutely trust him with the Dream Nail after seeing him once. I mean come on. It's Kirby. Everyone loves Kirby. Quirrel loves him especially. But Hornet fought him three times because she can't convince herself that this pink little ball who cried when she told him he had to kill her mother to break one of the seals has enough fight in him to actually kill the Radiance. (She is, of course, very wrong.)
Which begs the question: could a Kirby game be a good metroidvania? (And. . . was Milky Way Wishes from Super Star Ultra already technically a metroidvania?)

Galaxia being very prickly not in a "uwu she's feral" kind of way, but in a I am a ten thousand year-old sword forged for war and have been deprived of slaughter for five hundred of those years kind of way. I don't think a weapon is immune to cruelty.
Nor to lashing out against the first warrior who touched her.
I have so many damn thoughts about anime Galaxia and absolutely none of them are fanon-compliant.

Meta Knight strikes me as a guy who, while he doesn't have much in breadth of hobbies, the sheer depth of his hobbies makes it crazy how many of them he has.
He got into sword fighting and he didn't stop until he was unilaterally the galaxy's best swordsman ever. He got into building stuff and didn't stop until he built his own damn spaceship and recruited a crew and everything for it; whenever it gets shot down he gets it running again in a few hours tops.
I headcanon that he also likes learning languages- and since he's not from Popstar, I like to imagine that the language he currently uses to talk with Dedede and the rest of Dreamland isn't his native one. He's like the kind of guy who goes "Sorry, English isn't my first language" before proceeding to write with the most flawless language and grammar you've ever read. Which naturally leans into the fact that he likes to read- I bet he has an enormous library somewhere and is one of those people who reads at least 52 books a year.
This guy cannot have casual hobbies. The moment he gets into something he goes all the way or he goes home. Which makes the fact that he has, like, four of them extremely impressive (and it explains how and why he likes to keep busy all the damn time.)

Meta Knight didn't get videogames until you introduced him to Beat Saber now it's been 72+ hours since anybody's last seen him. Sailor Dee is crying in your arms. What had you done?

Related post to the previous: Meta Knight being referred to as "the Lone Swordsman" not because he doesn't have his Meta-Knights, but because he's the only one like himself. He's from another world and is a different species no one else has ever seen and he has a thick accent and his very visual design language contrasts so damn sharply with all the rest of the Popstar cast.
Kirby, the only one even remotely close to being something like him, blends right in with the rest of the Popstar cast's design language while Meta Knight very much doesn't.
And when Meta Knight first came to Popstar, he was alone. Now he isn't, but he's still different from the rest in a way that he cannot and does not want to minimize.

I'm slowly learning to separate Anime Meta Knight from Game Meta Knight but one headcanon I will hold onto and you can pry from my cold dead hands for both is that Meta Knight is an immigrant.
He comes from somewhere beyond Popstar, somewhere with a level of technology far above Popstar's own. His accent is thick and his gestures aren't "normal" and his habits are different. And sometimes he clashes with Popstar's own culture so badly he decides to do a coup over it.
This, of course, begs the question of where he came from. But ultimately I think the specifics don't matter; I think it's more interesting to extrapolate a more general sense of his past through how it shapes his actions in the current day.
And honestly, all signs point to him having left a place that was in far worse shape. He's a seasoned warrior who moved to a planet that's relatively stable and peaceful with a good quality of life and an abundance of food. And given his crashout in Meta Knight's Revenge, he clearly isn't used to all that and starts getting antsy about things being "too easy/lazy."
