I can't express what it is exactly but there is something about the energy of this sign that says it is lying. not just lying but lying in a plot significant way. like this feels like a sign they would put in a video game as part of the environmental storytelling about how you're in a dystopian future where you can't trust anything.

When I was a small child I had a near-drowning experience (no fratricide involved, I was pottering about and fell backwards into a pond) and I'll always remember the strange comfort and eerie wonder of that moment - the world of the living becoming a small, distorted circle of golden light, surrounded by tendrils and darkness and incomprehensible noise rising up on all sides around me.

But on the other hand - even in your question, I think you spell out the thematic richness and complexity of water as a horror element. Rain as a soundtrack for the monotony and relentlessness of depression in Eskew. Rivers as symbolic of natural cycles, human exploitation, offerings and takings. The ocean as the embodiment of vast and uncaring cosmic horror, but also a lure for the adventurous amidst the very human desire to try and find ourselves in the unknown. Bogs and marshlands as devourers and preservers, lurking wounds of the past. Flooding as the shattering of our social and architectural boundaries. Water is reflection and abyss, lifegiver and source and ending.

Usually south park's relevancy feels very fake and surface level to me, but it's really something how trump and his base are actually, visibly much more enraged by this than they've been about any other criticism, any other show, any other enemy I've seen in the entire near-decade of his political career. Fucking South Park got to them more than the combined effort of a million other comedians, journalists, parodies, academic criticisms or protest efforts. Like it's BAD. Like they want the creators in prison and want to consider this a hate crime.

two of the most brutally impactful animation shorts I've ever seen are trailers for a leftist history podcast. a medium that famously does not require visuals. but they went ahead and paid for two crazy animated trailers with crazy sound design anyway. a friend showed them to me two months ago. it's genuinely fucked up how much I think about them. is it strange to be in a fandom for 2 two minute long podcast trailers?
