Saki is an underrated character and i feel like people don't Get what Yosuke's thing with her was.

Saki was one of the first people to be nice to Yosuke when he moved to Inaba, and importantly the first GIRL. Yosuke is obsessed with performing heterosexuality. he is thinking about girls 24/7 and not necessarily because he is attracted to them but that's what he thinks he should be thinking about as a guy (and to get away from his gay thoughts)

Saki is nice to him and that lights up his little brain into thinking that he has a chance at a girlfriend so he gets attached. his first girlfriend! if he has a girlfriend, there's no way Yosuke is gay!

now I don't think Yosuke ever fell in love with Saki. his behavior doesn't lead me to believe that. his Shadow taunts him that he only came snooping because he wanted something to do, not because of Saki. the game establishes that Shadows don't lie for the most part, so there's an element of truth, even if it is distorted.

my main point is that Saki did mean something special to him as one of the first people to show him kindness (even if it it was likely fake) but also she was the hope for a "normal relationship" with a girl for Yosuke. with Saki, a closeted Yosuke could have been straight. but that got torn away.

i feel like a lot of people ignore Saki because they think she's kinda inconvenient when talking about souyo but she's important to Yosuke's character!

Straight women feel comfortable in gay bars because they precieve it as a place where it's "safe." They presume it's only men who are feminine enough to be "nonthreatening", but not enough to be a freak.

Think of the Modern Family episode where Claire goes out with Mitch & Cam to one of their friends' parties. Since most people there are gay she presumes a man there she met is gay & procedes to start hitting on him & spends the night with him. When she finds out he was straight & he interpretted this all as her being interested she says the line "I thought I was SAFELY objectifying a gay man!" Unironically Modern Family does a beautiful social commentary showing how nonqueer women view the Queer community; it's a petting zoo for them.

The minute someone who breaks out of what they find to be an "acceptable queer" (aka not a highly specific type of cis gay man), suddenly it's an issue. Suddenly the space is no longer safe because a "[masculinizing insult here] lesbian" hit on them. Suddenly they feel unsafe because the GNC people are more than just a man with a limp wrist.

This is why I hate arguments about how nonqueer women at queer bars are okay but nonqueer men at queer bars aren't.. In actuality, there's issues with nonqueers taking up our spaces for the novalty of 'safe' queerness in general.

I don't think we should be queer testing people, as there is a million & 1 reasons that's shitty, but I do genuinely believe if you want to have a discussion about nonqueers making queer spaces unsafe you need to let go of the 'man is sexual predator Always but woman is okay' mentality, especially how many stories I've heard of gay bars being infultrated by too-handsy of nonqueer women at batchelor parties.

all goofing aside I genuinely don't understand the urge to reimagine Taylor Allison Swift as a secretly queer icon when the pop music scene(TM) is like. literally overflowing with women who actually like women. Gaga and Kesha and Miley and Halsey are right there. Rina Sawayama and Hayley Kiyoko and Rebecca Black and Kehlani and Victoria Monét and Miya Folick if you're willing to get slightly less top 100.
