Top Five Blog Posts JOUR478
By Shaina Stitch
CARTOONS

I choose this blog by Sydney Gamino because its a perfect drawing off how the media treats the political party. Most news stations only hear what they want to hear. Choosing to write certain statements and yet leave things out. The word “the” is all lower case while the other letters are all in capital also the word “the” is in a different font, so typography comes into play here as well. Going back to the drawing, this is a funny cartoon because it did/ still does feel like the news media outlets are constantly have their ear out for Trumps next move or tweet. They made the reporter have such a long nose, which can be associated with a liar (hence Pinocchio.) Both characters have a finger pointing, Bernie's finger towards the reporter, and the reporters finger towards the satellite dishes attached as ears to his head. The cartoonist drew Bernie Sanders clothes to look disheveled and made the reporter look clean cut and unwrinkled.
GRAPHICS

I chose this image from Nicholas Hillery because it was visually appealing. It is organized, vibrant and there are a lot of small images throughout the graphic. I have always been fascinated by the psychology of colors and how people react to certain colors. This graphic is very detailed and well thought out. Being OCD I appreciate everything being in its own row making it very easy to read. The color green I learned makes most think of nature, luck, money, fertility, and in this graphic it used for those things. Red is known to be in a lot of fast food signs and logos because it is said to make you feel hungry. Red is also known for making people think of love or passion. I find it interesting that they made the section for Far Eastern Culture black for health, prosperity and stability (on purpose maybe.)
PHOTOGRAPHIC REPRESENTATION

This blog was done by Heather Harbin. Being one who has visited Cairo, Egypt this stirs emotion in me. I learned in my International News class that cellphones are very important to reporters as well as the locals because cell phones are the only way families can communicate with one another and make sure they are all right. If bombings take out electricity they rely on there phone for news and information. Citizen journalism is very helpful to the news because now anyone can whip out their phone, record an event, and send or tag a local news station. Sometimes citizen journalists inform news stations of stories they do not know are happening yet. Cell phones have expanded how information gets out. Pictures and video and papers can be sent through phones, unless you do not have service than I would expect an internet cafe unless you have your own gear. Cell phones capture incidents the public would never even know happened. Unfortunately this kind o incidence for example happens a lot regarding police brutality against the public.
TYPOGRAPHY

I liked this blog by Giselle Vazquez because the image combines both science and typography. Typography in a way is a scientific and psychological approach to types of style of writing. This image is easy to relate to society because as children the periodic table was taught to us in school. It triggers memories and familiarity. This part of Perception I found the most intriguing. How screenwriters, graphic designers, the media, etc can play with people emotions and how to relay certain feelings just by the type of font they choose. Even the Declaration of Independence has a specific font. Authors use font as a trademark. The Los Angeles Times has its own font. I never new fonts were of such importance, but it makes sense.
VISUAL CUES

I have always loved this picture, since it was shown in class. This image and blog was done by Gohar Tosunyan. This one image has so many characteristics of a good photo. Symmetry, lines, depth of field, contrast, and most of all lighting. The way the lighting continues all the way to the back of the photo carrying you there by the horizontal lines. Gohar wrote in this blog that he felt the colors gave the subway a melancholy feeling. I disagree, I feel like the subway is at peace. I do not know about anyone else but I have never seen a subway ever this quiet and deserted. The image to me feels calm and peaceful. I think because there are also spherical like objects such as the pattern of the lights shining on the ceiling and the statue in the middle of the image. The image also has a clean feeling to me. Usuall when I think of a subway station I think of dirty, trash everywhere, maybe a homeless person sitting in a corner. Its like the Versailles of subways. Beautiful image!

Gilda’s Favorites
By Gilda Calderon
Over the course of this semester, there were several blogs that I found quite interesting. Some of my top favorites were
1. Ground zero mosque Project by Giselle Vasquez
I found this blog really interesting because I love what it represents. During a time of great grief and sorrow, finding hope and solidarity was often times difficult. Yet this picture shows the true heart of he American spirit: Hope and unity. There are different perspectives one can look at this picture. One can see one person reaching out to hold on to another. It kind of goes back to a quote that I like that says that we are all angels with one wing, we can only fly embracing each other. Another perspective that one can take is one reaching out to a higher power for hope and strength
2. Figure/ Ground- Sydney
I liked this post because for one I am a big fan of the movie, but also because I like the colors and use of space of the photo. I like how despite that this was from an earlier lecture, I can apply it to last week’s lecture about contrast and the use of colors to emphasize the characters. It also uses some of Gestalt’s theory: The Law of proximity to emphasize that the bear and the girl are one and the same. The picture used overall is very creative and it illustrates the concept really well.
3. Political Cartoons -Byron Gonzales
This was one of my favorite political cartoons just because it was a little different from the ones that were previously presented. Everyone seemed to have cartoons of Trump being identified as a racist bigot but we forget he is more than that. He also likes to use twitter as his main communicative channel to the people. I thought this was really funny because one can tell that Trump is not a man who would analyze decisions like suddenly dropping a missile on a foreign country seriously. One can get a feel of how the President of the United States takes and handles his job by relying on his only two tactics that seem to identify him the most: threats to bomb and his twitter.

4. Graphic Design by Nicholas Hillery
I like how this advertisement is presented. It is a night face cream it gives allusion to the moon and with the dark blue background, it gives the reader further persuasion to buy the product in a subtle way. There is not any confusion when looking at the advertisement, he reader knows automatically what the advertisement is for. It is not like some advertisements that use Photoshop pend models or unrelated material to present the content.
5. Typography- Eny Herrera
This post was very creative. I liked how on the photograph, the author used all the words that can potentially describe a gun. I liked Erin’s mention of the font name Sans Serif. I remember that in class, we were discussing on how this font makes things easier to read and it really does so on this picture. Since the lettering is so condensed, I think this type of font makes the letters appear readable, at the same conveying a message using persuasion and still manages to make the picture appear very creative.

I believe that this is the best shock advertising Kathryn Tant choose for this subject. As when I saw the image of the how the lungs get when someone smokes constantly, it shocked me how the human blood looks when a person is a smoker. This image is known as a shock advertisement because it an image where it will shock the audience on the damages a cigarette can make if the person is a continuous smoker. This is also an example of visual persuasion because it is also trying to persuade people to not smoke anymore because this can happen to the human blood if they continue smoking. I believe this powerful advertisement should be displayed more in magazines, TV, or the internet to show the reality of how damaging this can cost to the human body.
This blog post is from Nicholas Hillery explains that a political cartoon can make a huge impact to the people in making their decision in who vote for such as the president, governors, and other political officials. I personally like this political cartoon because since I am part of the young generation, I am true fan of Bernie Sanders beliefs and felt that he was the most qualified person to the next president of the United States. On the other hand, as it shown that Hillary Clinton who’s portrayed here as a mother who tries to understand and connect with the young generation, can’t comprehend why they favor more Bernie Sanders than her. I can also relate to that because my parents rooted for Hillary to become the next president and was hard for them to understand why I favored more Bernie than her.
Personally, the image that Sydney Gamino posted on her blog so far has been one of my favorite. The reason why because this is an example of photo representation because it represents that girls are capable doing lots of things in world. The meaning is trying to send out especially to young girls is that we are strong, smart, beautiful girls and unique. For example, its shown here that a young girl is dressed in a red super hero outfit and is imitating the same standing position as the girl statue because she wants to feel strong and powerful like the statues is. I feel that this is a great picture for all girls to see that they can do anything they desire to do in life.
This is a great blog post that Imani used as an example of Semiotics because it symbolizes him as the former president of the United States and is still seen as an important figure even after he has terminated his presidency. When I saw this picture, my first attention that caught my eye was the former president Barack Obama is mostly focused on him and has a clear image. The two marines in the back and the airplane that are in the back is blurred out because I think the photographer felt that they weren’t that important and only put Obama to be seen clearly. Another example of semiotics about this image is that he was the black president of this country.
This is a great blog post that Aidanix exemplified for stereotyping. The reason is because I have heard stories of people saying that they’ve been stereotyped especially from Mexican people. There are people that think that Mexican only where big sombreros, have big mustaches, and they’re lazy. That is, it not true because since I am from Mexican descent that doesn’t mean that I am lazy person who doesn’t do anything and wears sombreros every place I go to. These stereotypes need to be stopped because they are so offensive and I find it disrespectful towards my culture. Especially it makes people believe that Mexican dress or act like that. They need to get educated before opening their mouths with inaccurate information

According to the Visually website, interactive infographic is defined as a representation of information that allow the viewer to interact with the data. They take programming to create, they usually have a lot more data, and they allow the viewer to discover things on their own. What this interactive infographic is displaying is about the health effects the lungs have when a person smokes cigarettes and person who’s a non-smoker. This graph was created by AmeriHealth New Jersey. In this graph, it shown the difference between a healthy lung from a person who’s a non-smoker and an unhealthy lung from a person who smokes. It shows the illustration of how healthy lungs should look like. It should look like a pinkish and reddish color so the lungs are able to breath properly. On the other hand, as for the unhealthy lung, it has a dark brown color where the lungs are completely damage due to the amount of smoked tobacco and has a small amount of oxygen the lungs can breathe in. There are also facts explaining the consequences there is of smoking tobacco, the amount of oxygen human beings breathes in and explaining the differences between a healthy lung and an unhealthy lung. As for the logo of this infographic, it is an important element for the population to known who are the ones informing or promoting this type of information to the people because they need to know if they’re sending out accurate information. But overall, the logo will always have a connection with the audience because it can relate if someone is trying to quit smoking, a peer who died of lung cancer, or just trying to tell the people the damage it can cause towards their health.

This interactive infographic is about the world’s most popularly known soccer player being compared about who earns the most salary in the field of soccer. This is an example of a relational chart because it shows where it tracks the amount of salaries each soccer player receives. Such as for the player who receives the least salary is Dider Drogba who now currently plays in the Phoenix Rising. As for Leonel Messi who currently plays in FC Barcelona and the national Argentina Soccer team, is in the chart as leading player who gets the highest payed salary. This infographic also in way is like a bar graph because as it states in the Perception book, it shows relative volume, amount, value, or other units if measurement. On the left side of the chart it shows the amount of salaries the players get payed in millions. On the bottom of the chart it shows where each player is playing. Since the charts shows where the players play at, these are the logos that represent the team. For example, there is the logo of Real Madrid where Cristiano Ronaldo whose shown in the chart as the second highest payed player, plays in the Real Madrid team and known in the whole entire world as the player who has won multiple Ballon de Oro (Ball of Gold) awards. Another logo that is known in this chart is the FC Barcelona team which is like I stated before Leonel Messi is part of this team and most high payed player.

This is a really cool interactive “map” of the human body. In a nutshell, it teaches the viewer about vitamins and their impact on the human vitamins. It does so much more than that though. On the left hand side of the human body map there is a list of vitamins and if you click each one, it will tell the viewer what types of food have the vitamins selected. Then, it will tell you what part of the body the vitamin is good for and a short description of that specific body part. For example, Vitamin B1 Thiamine is an important vitamin that turns food into energy and a deficiency from that vitamin can have a serious impact on the nervous system. If you click on the interactive icon, it will play a short little video description on how the cells, using the vitamin B1, are able to break down food and turn them into energy. For people that find biology boring, I this this site can come in handy because it simplifies complex biology and anatomy subjects and it makes learning about the actually fun.

This is a really cool interactive info graphic posted by the National geographic channel. It is a timeline of the some of the most important buildings in New York City. If you hover each one of the buildings, it will tell you information regarding the building and why it is a New York City historical landmark. For example, if you hover over the Empire state building, it will tell you some important historical references regarding that building, such as its size, date completes and a small trivia fact. It’s a fun way to learn history without reading about the history of New York. People have different styles of learning and some people are able to grasp contents better if they are presented to them visually. The National Geographic website really presented this in a way that does not over lead the viewer with information but only depicts the most important facts regarding the buildings. Since the information is presented very straight forward, the viewer is able to associates the shape and style of the building along with the information presented.

Since I like cars I really liked this mechanical info-graphic of how the engine runs and operates. I like inf- graphics because it stimulates the mind by interaction, movement and information. Society is becoming more and more stimulated visually and with more than one device. I myself am a visual learner and would rather see how something is done than to read about how it is done. I think a lot of people now just want to get to the point of something as quickly as possible and with info-graphics you can do that. Multi visual component graphics are able to let a persons mind drift to different areas of the graphic and can also direct the viewers attention to a specific object in the graphic. Which leads me to the next image I chose for this blog.

13 Reasons Why Your Brain Loves Info graphics = http://neomam.com/interactive/13reasons/ (Fun Random Video)
As more and more people begin creating, one thing becomes clear: To be seen, you have to stand out. I would assume a lot of psychological study goes into being able to create something that grabs the viewers attention. The psychology of color of course comes in to play. Being able relate to the graphic. The different kinds of fonts also make up the style of info-graphic you want to create. Ever since I was in school I have being seeing things such as flow charts, pie charts, and timelines. Its a way of organizing a lot of information into a clear visual. If it wasn’t for info-graphics things would be a lot more confusing and time consuming.

Politics and Graphic Design

http://www.politico.com/magazine/table-of-contents

http://www.cosmopolitan.com/politics/a4260403/new-yorker-cover-donald-trump-beauty-queen/
Written by Shaina Stitch
The first image I chose is an image of Donald Trump with a bunch of other images around him. The images dictate what the client wanted the viewers to see when they saw the image. Then of course the graphic designer went from there. Red and warm colors are known to be associated with fire, war, strength, power, and is known to attract attention more than any other color. Blue images were then laid out around him as to maybe show his more gentle side since the color blue is associated with calmness. There is a picture of Ivanka and Melania Trump, a picture of the flag, not sure who the man is in the upper left hand side, an architectural shot and a picture of Trump and Bernie and one of the many Presidential debates.
The second image is a bit more cartoon like than graphicly designed on a computer. But it does have some elements of design and principles of design. The elements of design it shows is line, and size. The vanishing line effect of the runway and size regarding to the size of the audience than Trump. Although for depth of of field this works as well in regards to the size of the audience to Trump. For the principles of design it shows both balance and proportion. Balance is shown by how center Trump and the runway is in the image, And having equal spacing on both sides of him showing the audience. It shows proportion by the difference in proportion to the size of both Trump and the audience.

This image is about when Bernie Sanders was running to be president of the United States in 2016. The image has many graphic designed elements such as the lines, color, size, and other aspects. The phrase that states “Not Me US” shows the different size font it has. The word “US” is displayed in bigger font letters than the other ones because so the people can the message Bernie is trying to send. What the message is saying is that if he’s elected a president of the United States, it will not just only be about him, it will be about what the people need help on and to create a nation where it can stop being selfish and help one another. Another graphic design element that the poster has is two-dimensional. In the background, you can see where there’s a lot of people with different colors and Bernie’s body image is connected with the background. This also makes the poster to pop out because of the creativities it has. This also means that he’s in favor of helping the people such as minorities, low-income, and letting the world know that that’s it time for the unfairness and discrimination to stop. Color is another important part of this because since is a member of the democratic party, the blue is included to represent his political party. As for the other colors such as red, navy blue, and orange means that there is also diverse people in this nation that need deserves to be treated equally and that he’ll represent them. There are some parts of the poster that shows what mostly is covered by and the rest of the space that’s left over. For the parts that says, “Not Me” is called a negative space because this is what is left over of the space that’s available in the poster. This is an important part of the part because like its stated in the book Perception, “spatiality, has a strong influence on how the design is perceived.”

I chose this advertisement because it uses several elements and principles of graphic design and it still manages to present a visually appealing picture. The curves on the back of the bottle give a sense of curiosity for the taste of Vodka, persuading the consumer to purchase the brand absolute vodka. Reading this week’s lecture, curves represent disortedness and confusion, and this advertisement utilizes this but with not necessarily a negative connotation. The bright colors used to fill the curve s evoke fun times and it gives the advertisement a cheerful tone that is contrasted with the serious colors of the vodka bottle. The texture of the bottle is very shiny and glossy, the curves help it obtain a realistic texture. It tells the viewer that the bottle itself is real, but if they drink it, they can end up in this potentially in this mystical, imaginary land. The proportion and size of the bottle are very large, signifying the importance of the bottle and its content, making it a necessary component to achieve a psychedelic state. Unity and the use of positive and negative space is also used very effectively. The curves on the background and the bottle are placed together, signifying that they are one and the same. Absolute vodka is directly tied with feelings of joy and fun. The use of negative space makes the elements of design portrayed in the positive space become more accentuated.

Typography & Politics
Pic chosen by Shaina Stitch
When I first saw this image the words, “make”, and “great again” caught my attention. They caught my attention because they reminded me of how the brand Coca-Cola is written. The Coca-Cola logo uses a form of Spencerian Script. The Ford logo also used it in its first oval logo design. In more recent years the script is basically the same but has become a little fatter with more rounded ends on some letters. It just reminded of the “good old days” when mostly every one was white and girls were wearing poodle skirts. Then of course the word America is in bold caps. The word America looks like slab-seriff with the bold lettering and fixed width. I nevertruly paid attentiion to the lettering in advertising and in the news but learned how they do it to capture our attention and make a statement.

Bernard “Bernie” Sanders is the current Vermont senator and who ran to be president of the United States in 2016. He was one of the most popular candidates during the recent presidential election and most like presidential candidate also. As for a little back ground story of the image is when Bernie held a rally in Portland, a bird land on his podium and the audience went crazy and it symbolized to them as for peace and no more wars. Since then it has been stuck with Bernie and this is why a bird is placed on this image. On the other hand, the font that’s displayed on this image has many different elements behind it such as symbolism, why its spelled in that font, and other aspects. For example, for the word Birdie, is a proportional typeface because it has two I’s in it and takes up less space. As for the other letters such as B. D, and E, they take up more space. Another example of typography is kerning. Its defined in the book as the amount of white space between the letter ca be extended or condensed. On the part where it states, “F O R P R E S I D E N T”, this is an example of what kerning is because it has a good amount of white space between the letters. I believe the reason why its typed in this manner because it brings attention to the audience and understand the message it is trying to say such as him running for president. This is also in so way related to spacing because since it has white spaces, it is easy for the audience to read and understand it. Since this phrase has the size font, characters, and font style, this is known as serif typeface. The reason is because it’s easier to be read because the format of the letter is the same.

Typography and the 2016 presidential elections
By Gilda Calderon
Blog reference and pictures taken from:
http://www.printmag.com/branding/2016-election-logos-trump-clinton/
While researching typography and the past 2017 presidential elections, I came across an interesting blog. The blog reflected on each of the candidates’ campaigns and logos but more specifically, the font which they used to carry out their campaign. It brought up an interesting point: How typefaces reflect on each candidate’s personality. On Trump’s campaign, the fonts used for his slogan, his campaign, his banner, all used traditional fonts such as Serif. Graphic designer Daniel Harris stated that by the use of traditional fonts, one can tell that Trump’s values are traditional and not very imaginative. He also stated that the font used on Trump’s “Make America Great Again “poster, Akzidenz Grotesk Bold Extended, says nothing but heavy and corporate. He pointed out that Trumps usage of fonts were always inconsistent, which by now everyone can agree that inconsistency is one of Trump’s biggest traits. Hilary, on the other hand, proves to be way more modern than trump. Her slogans, a bold type H assimilating with a old arrow signifies that she considers herself to be an advocate of change, the good progressive change that people of the United States can look forward to. She is consistent with her logos and ideas, but still manages to add diversity. For example, in her H slogan, she would put pictures of different ethnic groups and minorities. She portrays herself as being an advocate for minorities.

This image is about the 2016 presidential elections when Donald won the presidency against Hillary Clinton in November 2016. There are multiple meanings behind this political cartoon in regards about the recent presidential election such as humorous allusion, satire, visual puns, and caricature. The way Trump and Clinton are drawn in this cartoon, they have exaggerated feature on their appearance such as their face expression, body language, and physical appearance. For example, Clintons face is shown that since she is elderly women, her under eyes were amplified t make her look tired and devastated. This is an example of caricature because her imagine was drawn to bring attention to the audience and to make comedy out of it. Another element that’s involved in this image is humorous allusions. The humor part of this cartoon is that its making fun of Hillary loosing again the presidential election for the second time. The allusion part of it is that people should understand the meaning behind it because this was huge news about the presidential election and not much of it is detail, but it can easily be understood. Like I mentioned before since the image is making fun of Clintons second loss, it also jokes about it how it could possibly be of her losing to a presidential candidate that has no knowledge of how the governments works, no experience in politics, and someone who is a complete joke to the country. This is an example of satire which this image is a polemical joke of making fun of her. Another element about this cartoon is the way Hillary and Trump names are spelled and its meaning. Trumps name is spelled with red capital letters and added two letters from Hillary’s name which are I and H. It is spelled out TRIUMPH. This means that Trump has successfully won the presidency and shows his happiness of victory. On the other hand, as for Hillary’s, the I and H were taken out and is now spelled as LLARY which there were people who considered her as liar and didn’t believed in her. This is an example of visual puns because it two or more symbols are combined such as for their names adding letters and the other taking away letters. The other symbol is the definition of the letter such one meaning victory and the other fabricating statements or facts.

I understand why satires and visual puns were created, to grab the attention of the public in an artistic way. Weren’t cartoons created for children though? Matt Groening creator of The Simpsons and Theodor Geisel the writer for DR Seuss both first became known by their cartoons in the newspaper. I never realized how closely cartoonists and politics went together. The history of visual puns goes all the way back to the 18th century with Benjamin Franklin and the snake. In my opinion the Daily Show, Saturday Night Live, and The Colbert Report are also forms of satire. They both mock politicians and make jokes on their behalf. There were so many images when I googled satirical images of Trump, the cartoonists must have had a field day last election. It was hard for me to choose any HIllary Clinton ones since I approve of her more than I do of Trump. Trump is partly to blame for being such an easy target for the media and for political cartoonists. His twitter page says it all. In a way I would rather see a cartoon making fun of a political situation than I would to hear about it for 10 minutes on the news.

Political Cartoon
By Gilda Calderon
To this point, I believe the 2016 presidential election was one of the most dramatic and shocking election I have ever witnessed. There were many key points and moments that described the election overall. I think one of the most shocking ones was when Trump started his vendetta against Mexicans, calling them “rapists and criminals”. This formed a huge wave of hostility and resentment against all immigrants, not only Mexicans. Many started comparing Trump to Hitler, since his words seemed to resonate Hitler’s anti- Semitic agenda against Jews. On this political cartoon, Trump is seen holding Mein Kempf, Hitler’s autobiography where he describes his deepest feelings and his ongoing hatred against Jews. Trump here calls it his “bible” something sacred, and according to the artist, something that Trump probably follows to the last period. The artist uses satire and allusion imagery to compare Trump to the biggest dictator of all time to perhaps alert the American public of the dangers that having a Trump president could result in. The artist implies humor by poking fun at something Trump has never said, but the meaning is there: That Trump’s hostile comments against immigrants would start building the same hatred people felt against minorities in the 1940’s. The artist places and describes Trump and his followers as one and the same. The artist uses a popular phrase that Trump supporters used in the campaign when asked why they approved of Trump: “Tell it like it is”. By holding Hitler’s biography, and by saying that his supporters like things to be told “as they are” the artist conveys that racism and intolerance is a normalized theme with Trump and his supporters.
