Today’s online Water Gilding Refresher Class focused on the technique of red bole over yellow. Clay bole works together with the underlying gesso to produce a bright, smooth burnish of the gold leaf while imparting a sympathetic color under the particular kt of gold leaf used, informing the overall tone. From today’s Final session of the Summer Series: Gilding for Works of Art… Today we applied Garlic Juice and Gum Ammoniac to Cold Pressed Watercolor Paper and activated it by breathing on it through a Bamboo Straw since both mordants are very hygroscopic. A great class! A nice q and a discussion on protective coatings, Isolation Barriers, what we need when working in oils and acrylics on canvas and panels with gold and silver leaf. I have finally finished scheduling the entire year ahead with the Online classes I’ve been doing these last couple of years. Online has allowed me to work with over 600 students now from 24 different countries. The continued interested in this artform always amazes me as its been with us for over three thousand years.

Will be turning this long, basswood halfround frame into an oil gilded, brass leafed finish with burnt sienna casein as a ground, sealed with shellac, heavily rubbed and toned with a raw umber casein wash and shellac. No gesso will be used, my form of what would have been called El Greco! A modern idea of a 'value gild' where costs need to be constrained which the heavy toning and rub-thru allows. 👍 ~ (at Seattle, Washington)
