With an apology from both leorio and kurapika as well as an aprovial from the captain, we end episode 1. I really liked that episode! Even though I haven’t talked about it untill now, the soundtrack for this show is really good. The whimsical, orcestral peices really fit and give the impression of a grand adventure, and if the amount of episodes are something to go by, it’ll be a long adventure as well. All of the main characters in this episode where able to show their personality along with their heroics and teamwork! I think the conflict between leorio and kurapika was brought up and resolved very naturally, and they talked afterward! So much drama in so many shows can be avoided if the characters were reasonable and able to communicate. I’m glad this show didn’t fall into that. Above all, this show shown me that they know how to tell a story well. The characters are a little generic currently, but they are well writen. The motavations are great, the pacing is great, and the animation is good. Regardless of the main plot and the different arcs of this show, I know it’s worth investing in and continueing on.
Episode 1 gets a 9/10

Both Kurapika and Leorio reach out as far as they can, but Gon says screw that and just leaps off the side of the boat to save the helpless deckhand.

Now this is a great character moment. Right before Leorio and Kurapika are about to square off, they both, at the same instant, drop everything and jump out to reach this guy. I am a little dissapointed only beacuse I would love to see how each of these characters fight, but this is a great way for them to bond and see the good in each other.

They’re bout to fight in the middle of the storm. On a ship. With a waterspout about to catch them. I’ll give you both an A+ in dramatic setting, but a D- in timing.

-sigh- There is no what the masts are still unbroken with full sails this close to a tornado. I’m from illinois, I know tornados. Even this is an F1, the masts should be broken in half by now. I don’t know why this bothers me so much , but it does!

Come on Kurapika, don’t rain on his parade. Be the cool character I know you can be.

aaand with that small bit of silliness, Leorio is my favorite character. What can I say? I’m a sucker for ridiculous characters.

And here we have our secondary main characters motives. It seems we do have a loner hero type, its just Kurapika instead. However, this isn’t automaticly a terrible thing. It’s my philosophy that ANY concept can be good with the right execution. That is why Gurren Lagann is so good and Sword Art Online is so bad. Gurren Lagann took a pretty weak concept and turned it into an amazing show with great characters, great writing and amazing animation. SAO took an amazing conept and turned it into a bad show with terrible writing, worse characters, and ok animation. From what I have seen of this first episode, it seems like Hunter x Hunter know what its doing. So for now, I will trust Hunter X Hunter to deliver a strong character with, and this is most important, character development.

The sails are still at full! Little did I know that pine is the strongest material know to man in the Hunter X Hunter Universe. I should start a counter for every time wood defies my expectations.

The directer had Goofy-mentor eat an apple here to make him look like even more of an asshole -ding-. I see where they’re going with this though. Gon, Blonde-mage, and Goofy-mentor are the only ones not bothered by the storm, i.e. the only ones who will actually pass the hunter exam.

What a good child Gon is. He’s like a Steven Universe who isn’t afriad to hit things.
