It’s been a minute since I did one of these, but in a year that started with the death of a legend , and saw music infrastructure fracture even further into hyper-niche corners, I found myself more engaged than I’ve been in a while with new rap. Maybe the sheer impossibility of staying on top of everything freed me up to just hear what I hear and rock with what I like, or maybe I just finally burnt myself out playing Starlito tapes on repeat and needed something to switch it up with, but picking 50 was actually kinda tricky. A lot of Thug tracks had a bigger impact or showed his range more, or were probably even better songs... but this is the one I found myself playing on repeat, shouting out the words, the ad-libs and even the pitched up samples along with it every time. A whole lot of digital ink has been wasted in 2015 trying to “decode” the magic that is Young Thug in 2015, but everyone who’s on board knows it’s a whole lot simpler and a lot more complex than any analysis can give you. The only way to understand listening to Young Thug was just listening to Young thug. Putting on your headphones, turning up the volume, closing your eyes and blasting off. This is the song that always got me the highest. 

Future - March Madness [Tearentino] 

2015 Belongs to Future. He’s worked for it, and he’s paid for it. Listening to his work this year, there’s been more than a few times I feared 2015 might take him with it. Few artists have so rawly examined and translated the messy intersection of pain and escapism over and over again, intertwining battle cry's with cries for relief. It’s one thing to show the dark side of hedonism, it’s another thing entirely to make it feel this exhausting.

** Most likely because Spotify is more interested in art as interchangeable pieces of a commodified whole instead of individual works worth rewarding, so why not just substitute one song or one artist for another, in fact why not just let a computer tell you what to listen to next, it knows your taste better than you do probably, and why not just let it take control, none of it really matters anyway, it’s all just momentary distractions from the almost daily crumbling of our basic shared humanity

As you can tell by the tumbleweeds round these parts, I haven't been too engaged with the "rap internet" this last year, and definitely haven't felt too excited about the year in whole, content wise. Seemed like a good reason then to resurrect the top 50, and push myself to put together a list of current tracks I did like, just so I don't just go full on Grandpa Simpson on everyone.
