With the COVID numbers slowly rising again (unfortunately), that's got me thinking of a question I wanted to ask...

If COVID took place in the HypMic universe, how would your OC's handle it? Would they slowly go insane from being trapped indoors? Would they develop an unhealthy drinking/smoking habit? Or would they be perfectly fine?

Koyumi herself is fine. She considers herself someone who can adapt to things pretty well, even if she is rather shaky at first. She’ll follow the regulations done to a T, will watch over Moriko and Honoka as usual, etc. She’ll be the one to go shopping for whatever the team needs to too. As expected of the Division leader, she’s got it all held together!

But what she is worried about is her profession. Her entire job centers around people; engaging in conversations, pouring tea and performing for them, etc. If she can’t do any of that, then what happens to her? Geishas are already becoming pretty scarce in the modern day because of a lack of interest, this is just making it worse…Sure she can take on some other jobs in the meantime to make income, but she definitely won’t enjoy it as much…

Honoka wouldn’t care that much to be honest. In fact, she’s the most unaffected about the pandemic. Yes, concepts such as ‘wear a mask when going outside’ and ‘social distancing’ are new and confusing to her when Koyumi first tells her about it, but considering the fact that she never went outside that much anyway, does she really need to worry?? All of Honoka’s hobbies are indoors too, so she’ll just be chilling honestly. Hana No Joō all live in the same home as well, so all of the important people in her life is right next to her. It’s not that bad!

Knowing this terminally ill child though, she’s probably gonna get COVID anyway despite all of this. Someone help her. When will she be free of this curse?

Moriko would’ve definitely had a harder time adjusting to the pandemic if she was still an actress, but now? Considering how many hours she needs to spend on drawing panels, she can’t really complain! At least she might be able to actually complete things before the deadline now since she can’t go outside much anymore; she keeps finishing her manga at the last minute because of how much she spends her time doing things outdoors. Besides, it’s not like she’ll be completely bored and only working! She can do some video game streams too whenever she’s on break, and her teammates can join in!

I guess the only thing she’s gonna miss is the in-person interactions between her and her fans…Seriously, those are so fun! She’s quite an affectionate person too, so the ‘social distancing’ thing is dreadful for her.

Yudai is DYING. Seriously, this is the most terrible situation he could imagine! He understands why these rules are established but he will continue to complain endlessly about it until his teammates distract him with something else—like gaming. He’s unintentionally the worst one out of everyone here due to his natural extroverted-ness; he gets all touchy/affectionate when greeting aka he doesn’t do social distancing, sometimes he pulls the mask below the nose, he sneaks outside anyway, etc. Get Fumio to whack him.

And you know what’s worse? You know what he hates the most? He can’t go to the fucking beaches. That’s literally what made him famous, his love for water and being a swimmer—And you’re telling me he can’t do it anymore?! Yeah his house in Enoshima has a pool that he can swim in but it’s not enough! Not enough at all!! Even the backyard lake he has back in Hokkaido is not enough for him and that’s significantly bigger! Fuck you Coronavirus! …….Maybe he should actually go into that pool to cool his head for now. Time to get mopey again.

…Well shit. Asuka is slightly distraught at the fact that he needs to stay inside. Being outside is literally his job, the whole point of archaeology is to discover ancient things, so this…sucks. It really does. He’s fine with the whole ‘online’ thing, he can definitely still teach people who are training to become archaeologists or just wants to learn history/culture in general, and he can still do part-time jobs online too but…He just doesn’t get the same energy.

…I mean, he was never a complete stickler for the rules anyway. As long as you stay away from people and wear your mask then you can be outside, right? Sooooo he can definitely go explore as long as he’s not near anybody, yeah? Yeeaahhh? :)

Fumio is hands-down the only sane person in the entire Solar Siren team when it comes this pandemic, he’s perfectly fine just being inside the household with his plants. Peace and quiet, his beloved. However, he’s looking at his teammates with the most scared look because of their feral ‘I-need-to-be-out-in-the-world’ aura. Unfortunately for his ass, he is still gonna get dragged around by Yudai whenever the olympic swimmer wants to leave anyway so someone pray for him please—Fumio doesn’t get as easily sick as Honoka does but he’s still the physically weakest out of the team so!

“Ah ah, what do we have here…Humans? What a surprise. I didn’t think humans would be so ‘brave’ as to appear before us on a night such as this. What do you say we show them just how powerful us yokais are, since they are so curious~”

“…Ehe, tada! Honoka made me look like a Tengu! Gosh, you don’t know how excited I was when I heard that there was a horror round for this contest! Hmhm~ Don’t I look cool? Tengus are said to be swordsmen too, pretty fitting if I do say so myself.”

Dim, almost dark on the stage. There is no introduction as Koyumi walks up, looking more…stoic than expected. None of the motherly warmth she usually conveys is shown anywhere. It’s a far more different atmosphere.

Coldness still prevails, even as the red lanterns light up on stage to illuminate her appearance. Elegant as always, as she is supposed to be.

If she is to put on a show for everywhere, to give them a peek of her talent, then it’s only natural that she gets into the act, doesn’t she?

This is, after all, what she does best.

“Geeezzz, a talent show, huh? Well, guess I gotta pull out the big guns!” Moriko laughed. “It’s actually been a super long time since I’ve done this kind of thing, haha. But, it’s kind of stuck with me after I did it in a movie, so! Here I go!”

The Gion Matsuri! The Gion Matsuri is a national festival hosted by the Yasaka Shrine that occurs during the entire month of July, it’s most famous event being the Yamaboko Junko on July 17th.

“Sing, dance, drink, and eat! You’ll forget all your problems if you do! Well, not that I’ve ever gone to an actual Gion Matsuri yet, but I’m sure it’s very fun. Miss Koyumi always says it is! You should come watch her perform there next time.”

Speaking of the Yasaka Shrine, it is dedicated to the sea god Susanoo-no-Mikoto, younger brother of Amaterasu, as part of the Gion faith.

“Which is why I asked Honoka to design me an outfit that resembles our God. I hope I’ve done him justice, ufufu.”

Behind the scenes . . .

Honoka couldn’t stop herself at all from pacing around the room after she finished the outfits and helped put them on her teammates. She’s far too antsy about everything. For good reason, of course.

This is her first time making clothes for such a big thing—And actually showing it off! On TV, no less! With so many people watching! Of course she’s gonna be anxious! She’s working with two people who actually has experience in fashion, and one of them has a whole brand compared to her who only makes clothes as a hobby! Her division is relatively small compared to everyone else, so she didn’t have much to base things off of. But she thinks she did a good job…? Maybe? Her teammates seem to like it at least…

She should rest for now. Honestly, it feels like she rushed herself too much to get the outfits done. This is absolutely no self projection.

And thus the manga artist ran off with a bright grin as always. A small smile graced Koyumi’s lips as she turned around to go back to their shared home, whisking away the wagon of gifts for her daughter.

“Miss Koyumi! Miss Koyumi! One of Moriko’s friends gave me a present!”

“Ah, is that so? I’m so happy for you!”

“Y-Yes!! Um, he said not to open it until we get home, so can we go home now? Please? Pplleeaassee?”

“Ahaha! You’re very eager, dear. Actually, I saw Santa delivering more Christmas presents over at our house earlier and it’s all mostly for you! Come come, let’s go back.”

“You actually saw him?! We need to hurry then!”

Honoka grabbed Koyumi’s hands and started to excitedly run back to the direction of their house, almost skipping on the way there. The first Christmas she ever celebrated; the best moment of her life.

🐥What made you choose your OCs' names? What about their rap abilities?

Okay SO! First things first, I created the team name first so I wanted the girls to have names connected to flowers or nature to follow suit. Moriko is obvious (Forest Child), while Honoka’s name has the kanji for flower (花). Their surnames are flowers too! Koyumi is the only one with the odd name out as her name means “Little beautiful friend”, but remember that’s just her Geisha name~

Harajuku division already had flower surnames for their team members though so I had to change some things up ( ・∇・) Moriko’s original surname was Akaibara, for example-

As for their rap abilities, they were actually super easy to come up with because I just connected them to whatever their motifs and/or occupation is!

Honoka’s ability is connected to her job of course—it’s a summon-type ability that has unlimited duration because we’ve never really seen anyone in canon have a summoning ability (Unless Ramuda and Tom's abilities count?) It’s also connected to her backstory, which I will go further into in another post…

Moriko’s ability is connected to her whole sun motif—The blinding/bypassing their turn aspect comes from the fact that you shouldn’t look directly into the sun because it’ll hurt your eyes obviously, while the healing aspect for her teammates is because sunlight is essential to your health.

Moriko Himawari, also known as Canopus in rap battles, is the third member of Hana no Joō. A cheerful actress most known for being in horror and action series / films, Moriko retired to focus on pursuing a manga artist career. Moriko is a tall brown-skinned woman with a toned build. She has long, curly brown hair that reaches her back, with yellow at the tips; it’s normally put up in a ponytail. Her bangs are swept to her right, framing her green eyes. On her neck she’s wearing a black choker with a cream-colored flower.

She wears a pale yellow cardigan that has flowers and butterfly patterns on it, and a white sleeveless kimono top with black lining and a slit on its side. On her waist is a dark brown strap for her katana. Her sweatpants are dark red and she wears white sneakers. She also wears black gloves with gold lining.

Personality

The most accurate way to describe Moriko is cheerful. She’s the typical genki girl: usually smiling, kind, and energetic. She always wears her heart on her sleeve. It kind of makes other civilians uncomfortable around her though because she keeps talking even if they want to be left alone, so it feels like she doesn’t know how to read the room.

Moriko’s also quite rebellious, often breaking rules if she doesn’t find them necessary or doing things her own way if she doesn’t like the way someone else does it. She’s been restricted for most of her life, let her be free for a bit~ Granted she’s gotten into trouble for being like this but who cares!

Despite her friendliness, she absolutely loves the thought of fighting if it means she gets to have fun. Whether it be physically or with a microphone, Moriko absolutely loves a challenge and enjoys the thrill, which is why she joined the DRB with Koyumi. Most of the time she doesn’t really take it as an actual competition though, she sees it as a “friendly battle” and hopes to be friends with the “enemy” afterwards like what happens in some animes. It’s not her being stupid or naive, she just has a lot of hope for people. It’s hard to get her to truly hate someone.

She’s the main driver in the team, owning both a car and a motorcycle. She’s gotten into a lot of car chases though, which has destroyed property so she needs to apologize and pay for things often.

Honoka Ajisai, also known as Maniakin in rap battles, is the second member of Hana no Joō. A quiet girl who believes herself to be cursed, she finds peace in playing with dolls. Honoka used to be a part of the team Sangyo Stage, but it disbanded which left her incredibly depressed and bitter. Luckily she’s found a new one, will they do better this time?

Appearance

Honoka is a small and frail-looking girl, with a deathly pale complexion. Her hair is long and purple, with lighter purple streaks; it’s usually pulled up into loose twin buns, with braids hanging from it. There are two green beads in her hair as well. Her bangs fall over her pink eyes a little at the right.

She’s usually wearing a light purple short-sleeved kimono-like hoodie with longer and even lighter purple oversized sleeves underneath that has frills at the end. Her short waist skirt is dark blue with a green and red cord around it, to give off the image of an obi. Her stockings are black and she wears purple lace shoes. Her hands are wrapped in bandages due to the aforementioned injuries from being reckless with her sewing machine.

Personality

As mentioned before, Honoka believes herself to be cursed. This stemmed from her incredibly low self-esteem, how frequently she gets sick, and the fact that she doesn’t really come from a…loving family. She’s a bit sensitive, you see. This belief about being cursed became worse after her last team disbanded and she fell into an even deeper depression, but she’s doing a lot better after Koyumi took her in.

Due to having lived an extremely sheltered life, she doesn’t know a lot of things and is very naive as a result, having an almost childlike innocence. Honoka is a lover of all things paranormal, and is superstitious because of it; hell she even keeps her dressmaker shears under her pillow to “prevent nightmares”.

When around other people, Honoka becomes extremely shy and quiet. She’s never been allowed to interact with a lot of people, so she gets easily intimidated. Usually it’s out of fear, but there are times where she’s overwhelmed by people that are easily excitable or hyper as well which causes her to hide behind one of her teammates. If you share common interests with her then she can warm up pretty easily, however. As seen with her teammates, she’ll become more energetic around people she’s comfortable with.

Hypnosis Mic

Her long microphone is red and white, resembling a staff. The windscreen is the head of a bunraku puppet; whenever Honoka decides to rap, the puppet head will immediately open it’s mouth to mimic her lip and head movements, as if copying what she’s saying.

Her speakers take the form of a bunraku stage with a bonsai tree in the middle. On the sides are karakuri dolls holding speakers, the one on the left being a boy and the one on the right being a girl, respectively.

Her rap ability is Dummy, which summons a giant bunraku puppet that she can control to defend her team from attacks, and to attack right back. It slowly depraves Honoka of her stamina and makes her weaker the longer it’s out. Moriko calls it a ‘Stand’—She has no idea what that is, do you??

Honoka often switches between her Kansai accents, though admittedly her Kyoto-ben is more forced as she’s not used to talking in a polite, feminine way.

She makes her own clothes for her puppets / dolls, whether they’re traditional or not.

She’s never gone to an actual school, usually only staying at home. Her parents “homeschooled” her but they did a really shitty job at it. Her teammates are currently trying to teach her.

Appearance

Koyumi is a tall and slightly curvy woman, though normally she’s covered up modestly. Her hair is black with a couple blue streaks, put into a low ponytail with a braid at the side. One of her red eyes are scarred, which she usually covers up with her bangs.

She wears a long red-pink coat with a lighter red-pink color on the underside. There’s a brown waist corset that parts the flowing coat. Underneath is a black turtleneck, with the sleeves forming a pointed shape between her index and middle fingers. She wears a long pink tulip skirt with a ruffled hem, black stockings, and black heeled shoes. Sitting prettily around her neck is a sakura flower necklace with pink beads. Her teammates sorta wonder if she ever gets hot under there.

Personality

As expected of a geisha, Koyumi is a polite, easy-to-talk-to woman. Wise and nurturing, she’s the mother figure to many people whether it be her actual daughters or the younger geiko and maiko back at the okiya. Talented in many things, she uses her techniques as a way to help people relax even if she does demand a high price. She can be a tease too, but it’s in a light-hearted way.

Koyumi is someone who normally avoids violence unless push comes to shove, and even then she never likes using her whole strength. She’s a woman of art after all, not a woman of war; it’s exhausting to waste her time on fighting when she can spend time doing something productive.

She’s also incredibly secretive about a lot of things, hence her alias. It’s a double-edged sword, as she can keep your secrets and promises private incredibly easily, but she won’t reveal or tell secrets to you unless she absolutely wants to. It makes you question what she actually knows. Perhaps this is her warped way of trying to protect people?

Hypnosis Mic

Her microphone is on a stand, with the stand itself taking the form of an upside down red kyowagasa, the handle being the windscreen for her to rap into.

Her speakers take the form of two giant inari statues at her sides holding spherical speakers in their mouths. She also has a round platform to stand on; a geisha needs a stage when they’re performing, after all.

Her rap ability is…Well she doesn’t have one! She only obtained her Hypnosis Mic recently after all. She seems to be doing just fine without one though, so maybe she’ll develop one quicker than expected?

Koyumi usually sings more than she raps, or she mixes the two of them together. Her voice goes even deeper when she’s rapping.

Trivia

Koyumi is right-handed.

Her quote is from Mineko Iwasaki’s book, “Geisha: A Life / Geisha of Gion”.

Her speakers are a reference to Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto, the Shinto goddess of dawn and the arts. She’s also known as the Inari-kami Omiyanome-no-Okami.

Despite how she usually avoids violence, she does know how to fight and she even owns a few war fans. Moriko has begged her to show her how she fights but she always refuses, as it ‘doesn’t suit her’…anymore.

Her husband and her aren’t on any bad terms actually. The only reason why they broke off is because Koyumi wanted to keep being a geisha, which married geisha aren’t allowed to keep working in Kyoto.

Her wedding ring is hidden in a jewelry box.

花の女王｡

Hana no Joō (Flower Queen) is an all-female rap group consisting of Division leader and geisha Koyumi, bunraku puppeteer Honoka Ajisai, and retired actress Moriko Himawari. Together, they represent Gion of Kyoto.

The group’s color is red-orange, colors of the festival lanterns and autumn leaves.

The group’s symbol is a wagasa; however, unlike most other groups, they don’t have it on themselves—instead all three members just own one. They do have the common motif of a flower accessory though. To them, flowers symbolize the beautiful women they have bloomed into…but we all know flowers wilt eventually.

Their Rhyme Anima hand sign is simply holding their fingers and thumbs together, as if they’re holding the stem of a flower.

Their only reason for joining the D.R.B is out of curiosity, as Koyumi wanted to perform in a more modern society in modern ways. Or perhaps there’s a more deeper reason…
