Teachers and Students Relationship with Technology
It is important for teachers to work with their students and the technology that is available to them to create a sustainable learning environment. In chapter one of тАЬNever send a human to do a machines job,тАЭ the authors argue that teachers and technology need to work together as an ecosystem to create an ideal learning environment (21). To put this ecosystem into practice, teachers must consider TPACK. That is, they must consider the content (i.e. subject matter such as science, history, math, etc.), the pedagogical knowledge (how they plan on presenting this information to their students like direct instruction, modeling etc.), and lastly they must consider selecting the right technology that will make the content accessible to their students while at the same time supporting the pedagogical strategies they chose to deliver the information to their students. It is very important that the teacher does not let the technology take over their job. The technology must be used as an aid to help students learning. One way in which teachers could use technology to aid in their students learning is through different apps and websites available. The teacher could create a class webpage where information can be shared, questions can be asked, and discussions can be started. Apps and websites like these could be helpful for students with different learning exceptionalities such as social anxiety. It could act as an outlet for students who may not feel comfortable speaking in class, asking questions in class or if a student thinks of something after class that they would like to share they can put it there.
I think that technology could also help the teacher with his or her time management. For instance as stated in тАЬNever send a human to do a machines job,тАЭ both the teacher and the technology have their special niches. For instance, technology can be used to repetitive tasks, while the teacher can supplement their critical thinking and social interaction. I think if a teacher can find a technology to help their students to repetitive tasks like memorization, while he/she is there for any questions etc., then this could free up some of the teachers time in their planning, and more time to cover other content.
Our world is constantly changing, and with change comes newer, quicker and better technologies. It is important that teachers know how to use these technologies and be able to introduce, and teach them to their students through hands on experience. I believe if a child has a good grasp on technology i.e. how to use it safely, effectively and efficiently, this will aid them not only in with their learning but in their future and their careers while students who do not learn how to use technology properly are more likely to be at a disadvantage once they become older and enter higher education and the work place. It seems no matter what kind of a job one has, there is some form of technology that is mandatory for employees have to know how to use. Students being comfortable with trying new technologies in school I think will help them to be more comfortable learning and adapting to new technologies in the future. ┬а
