Identification of fiber is a process to determine the composition of textiles materials. It is very important to textile sector for dyeing, printing, finishing and caring the textile materials. There are number of experiments to identification of textile fibers. The methods are categorized into two types: Non-technical method and technical method. The feeling test and burning test are included in non-technical. And the microscopic and chemical test are following technical category.

The ability to identify textile fibers aids a garment manufacturer in determining the type of fibre and the care that should be taken in keeping textiles made of that fiber. This is a crucial component for clothing labeling, which involves indicating the fiber content of the garment.

Feeling test

This is a traditional testing method. It is based on the handling properties and do not give the accurate result because handling property can be changed due to applying finishing chemicals. The disadvantage of the feeling test is that it is difficult for beginners or amateurs to estimate the fibre composition just by touch. As a result, such precise prediction necessitates years of experience.

Burning test

Different fibers show different behavior. But it is difficult to identify fiber when it is blended yarn or fabric. The cotton, rayon, and linen burning odor are like burning paper. Wool and silk shrink away from the flame and their odor is like burned feather or hair. Nylon is very difficult to burn inflame. The nylon and acetate is melting on fire and their odor is like burning paper and vinegar. The polyester and acrylic are melt and burn with black smoke.

Microscopial test

The test is able to identify between fibers with ease. Natural fibers are more easily identified by the test than man-made fibers. Synthetic fibers have a remarkably similar appearance, and the growing number of variants makes it difficult to tell them apart even under a microscope.

Chemical test

Chemical testing is more accurate technical method of fiber identification. The solubility test with chemicals may easily reveal the reactions of different fibers, and so it is easy to recognize the fabric. The fiber is immersed in a chemical at a specific temperature, and the solubility determines the fiber type.
