@fluffelhighwind tumblr understandably didnt keep the ridiculous amount of text i put in the tags of ur poll so here are my thoughts on what kain's age was when his father died (and my answer is yes. 5 and 17)
edit: forgot that the most interesting part of all this is that it culminates in kain's last name technically not being highwind. the importance he places on being a highwind, on his connections to his father, are both in association with his adoptive father, not his birth father, which makes sense, given he would've known his birth father for 5 years and then his adoptive father for 12

#do what i do and sort of mishmash ff2 and ff4 together#where there's a woman named elena and her young child named kain who richard highwind intends to adopt after the war is over#at least in the psp remake the child is named kain#and while richard dies before he can do this#this child has lost both his birth father and his adoptive father#which is the part that i carry over#where phillip last name undisclosed is killed w all the other dragoons and wyverns when the emperor poisons the water supply#richard who is the last dragoon moves w elena and kain from deist#the breeding ground for wyverns the sacred home island for dragoons#to baron where they live until richard goes off the fight the emperor in a different kingdom and is killed#effectively continuing the story of ff2 as well just placing more years between the two events#so kain loses his birth father as a child and then his adoptive father as a late teen making both ages significant#it's keeping w what he told ceodore--that his father died fighting an empire#something that doesn't necessarily work in the ff4 canon we know#no such empire having been mentioned#but it works when continuing the narrative of ff2#having this man last of the deist dragoons fighting and dying#and keeping firion at a younger age than kain when the two meet in dissidia#rather than firion being 17 when kain was 5 OR the child name kain just being an easter egg but not canon applicable#it also would make sense as to why kain feels he owes the king of baron#for caring for him and his mother both after their relocation from deist and after richard's death#but why he doesn't see him as a father figure the way cecil does#bc cecil is an orphan meanwhile kain had a birth father who he knew and lost and then an adoptive father who he knew and lost#he both knows two men to be his father and in keeping w the other stuff he'd still have his mother#even after richard's death#which is a hc of mine that i LOVE--all my ideas abt elena tbh#so cecil has reason to have a relationship w the king that kain does not that would be weird were they in the exact same position#it makes more sense for kain to have a situation like rosa where at different points they've lost one parent but not the other#so the king is supportive and important to them but he's not their father figure#interesting that they do bridge the cids and the highwinds though in the ds ver as well slightly

i think it's great when someone tries to pull off a tragic self-sacrifice in a story and there's at least one guy who's just like "no this is fucking stupid actually. you're an idiot." about it. because it kind of is. i love a good tragedy but let's be honest with ourselves if a friend tried to indulge a noble sacrifice fantasy would you not be a little annoyed. like come on man.
