One of my favorite bits of accidentally correct writing in a JRPG is that, according to the official timeline of Tales of the Abyss, it took 3 months for the main party to traverse across half a continent back to the protagonist’s home.

Which sounds super expedient for a group mostly traveling by foot, until you remember that one month on their planet is about 60 days long, because Namco’s 765 numerical pun was used for the number of days in the planet’s orbital period. Like yeah, 180 days is a much more reasonable expectation for walking that distance.

I feel like there's a parallel phenomenon to Western fantasy novels not knowing how long a thousand years is whereby JRPGs don't know how big a continent is.

What are you top favourite fictional dogs?

This isn't really a Tales question but I figure some of you might say Repede so I'm posting it here anyway. I saw something else about favourite cats, but now I'm thinking about dogs and I want to hear about all the Very Good Dogs out there in media.

The command to Reach Heaven Through Violence fortunately comes with several treatises on the subject.

A lot of my favourite media isn't morally bankrupt so much as it is morally incomprehensible. It studiously adheres to the forms of media that has a moral message it wants to convey, but exactly what that message is, or to whom and under what circumstances it could conceivably apply? Now there's the trick.

I recognise that this may be a controversial opinion on the "everything is better when girls" website, but I feel like making the action-adventure game protagonist's obligatory tutorial/exposition-providing bratty little fairy companion a boy is underexplored territory.

This series respects children in ways that a lot of dystopian child-led resistance YA fiction just doesn’t quite land, or will later emulate. It is not gentle to its characters, but it is aware at all times of how deeply fucked up it is that the fate of humanity falls on the shoulders of five kids. It is aware that the paranoia that the Animorphs have to develop to survive is deeply unhealthy and that being forced to wage a guerilla war is ruinous in every aspect of their lives and futures. It has no pretense of making the Animorphs into better people, just better soldiers.

But having a future at all is why they fight. And for understanding that, this series does like children.

I think if Shep actually did feed him to Todd at gunpoint, Todd would at least hesitate a little. Not because of any moral reservations on Todd's part, but because that kind of absolute devotion is something that the Wraith know on an instinctual level.

He'd probably stop to compliment Shep on doing whatever needs to be done to further his own ends. Hell, he probably did in a version of this where Wallace gives himself up willingly.

Because he's 100% correct that Shep is his "brother". Their life circumstances are wildly different but, at the end of the day, they are a reflection of each other. Shep is Todd if he had anyone in his life to devote himself to. To be beholden to.

And Todd is what Sheppard would be if he had no one.

I know it's unlikely to happen, but I want Osiris Reborn to have an additional difficulty mode where the gameplay sections are all Story-level difficulty but the entirety of the game is in Lang Belta and you don't have the option to change language settings. Conversations have little timeout bars so you have to choose dialogue options quickly and you don't get time to translate individual words one-by-one. Total language immersion mode.

SCUBA.

Not counting anyone with a diving kink (and let's be real, this is The Internet - it's gotta exist!), the actual mechanics of SCUBA diving just don't lend themselves to good sex analogies.

I don't know what positions would leave you in a hyperbaric chamber if you go up too fast, I don't think that kicking your legs with your feet together is generally applicable in the bedroom, and I don't have any experience having my air supply cut off just because I rolled onto my back.

Best I've got is that you *might* find a little bald man in a canoe, but you could probably do that without ever putting on a BCD.

Challenge: least suitable sport or hobby to construct a "sex is just like [thing]" analogy with.
