Any time you’re sad, just think about how Henry Gaunt’s love for Sidney Ellwood is so strong that it randomly bursts out of him.

Some examples:

When he touches Ellwood’s hair at the beginning of the book and is like “oh shit, I gotta cover this up. What do I say? You remind me of my dog.”

The moment in billets when Ellwood first climbs in his bed to calm Gaunt down and Gaunt kisses his head and calls him an idiot.

The next day when Gaunt suddenly puts his arm around Ellwood and kisses his head again and Ellwood is left shocked, but Gaunt acts like it never happened.

The way Gaunt goes from “I can’t tell you what I’m thinking about” to sucking Ellwood’s dick in 10 seconds. Gaunt doesn’t kiss him or tell him he wants him—just goes right for his fly and onto his knees because he can’t contain himself.

How it takes every ounce of Gaunt’s restraint not to kiss Ellwood in the tub in Hundreds when the other boys are there.

How Gaunt nearly cuts Roseveare’s head off for insulting HIS Ellwood. “He doesn’t need a mask.”

He breaks Burgoyne’s nose for upsetting Ellwood by reading Maitland’s letter.
